Nocturne is a captivating work adapted from the incidental music for Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream, composed by the German master Felix Mendelssohn. Inspired by the Bard's fanciful tale of tangled lovers, mischievous fairies, and an enchanted forest, this music transports listeners to a magical midsummer eve.The story follows four lovers whose romantic entanglements become chaotically intertwined thanks to the meddling pranks of the impish Puck with his love potion. To quell the madness he has unleashed, Puck casts a spell lulling the four into a deep slumber accompanied by Mendelssohn's wistful Nocturne. When they awake, all is forgotten and order restored.This transcription for brass ensemble exquisitely captures the longing melody originally voiced by solo horn, dividing it among three horns. The euphonium and bass trombone parts are interchangeable, though the powerful euphonium is featured during the work's swelling middle section. If performing without euphonium, some phrases differ slightly.Two versions are included - the full-length original and an abridged edition better suited for certain programs and ensembles' abilities and stamina. FRANZ SCHUBERT was an Austrian composer native to the cosmopolitan city of Vienna, colorfully called the “City of Music†as so many other non-native musicians composed or performed there, while others such as Mozart and Beethoven called it home.  While only 20 years of age in the year of 1814 Schubert composed a remarkable number of lieder (songs), drawing upon the works of many different poets of the period, which eventually connected him with the poems of Johann Goethe.  This lead Schubert in the year of 1815 to compose the well-known Erlkönig, op. 1 D. 328, based upon Goethe’s poem Der Erlköning, which was taken and revised from a widely told Scandinavian folk tale about a sinister daughter of a forest-dwelling Elf King. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a poet, playwright and novelist who is thought to have been influenced by the Sturm und Drang literary movement, becoming perhaps one of the greatest authors in the German language whose works have had a lasting impression on Western literature to this day.  Notably, it ought to be mentioned that many of his poems were set to music by the likes of Mozart, Liszt, Wagner, Mahler, Berlioz, Beethoven and of course Schubert, who used Goethe’s poem, Der Erlkönig, to produce one of his more fanciful art songs that depicts the death of a child who is attacked by the “king of the elves,†a mystical being who lingers in the woods only to stalk little children and kill them with a touch of his hand. The story of the Erlkönig is considered by some to have come from the Danish folk ballad Elveskud, and that Goethe’s variant was inspired by a work written by the philosopher, Johann Gottfried von Herder.  It tells the story of a boy who is being carried home by his father during the night, and the child hears noises and seems to see things in the woods, while the father attempts to comfort the son by explaining away the things that scare him, all the while riding ever faster on horseback, only in the end to discover that his son has died. (The Erlkönig translates literally from the German as “Alder King†rather than the commonly used “Elf King.â€)For this arrangement, German lyrics are included to assist the performer in connecting the music to the thoughts, feelings, and specific moments expressed in the words that might otherwise be lost if not aligned with the music.  Noting that changes in mood or tone of the music are better understood when aligned with the words, and by including the lyrics, the performer can phrase a passage while having a guide to see the end of the musical line. Romantic lieder allows for rubato in performance, as playing the piece exactly as written on the page will result in a less inspiring rendition.  To match the horn’s register with the vocal line, the piano part required alterations by moving some notation higher in the register.

Liz is the name of a lonely girl who sells bread at a bakery and socializes with the forest animals. After a big thunderstorm, she finds an unnamed blue-haired girl lying outside. She quickly takes her into her home and, the two become close friends. After a while, Liz started noticing the girl sneaking out at night and coming back before dawn. Liz noticed how the girl would look at the birds freely flying in the sky when they fed the animals. Liz becomes conflicted with her emotions but eventually decides to release her from the cage that is her home. Liz confronts the girl and tells her that she needs to be free and spread her wings. Although distraught by Liz's decision, the girl comes to respect it. German.When Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera Hänsel und Gretel was premiered on 23 December 1893 in Weimar conducted by Richard Strauss, the work could look back on an extensive history of origin.Humperdinck’s younger sister Adelheid Wette (born in 1858) had displayed a great interest in literature in her youth and written a variety of poems for special occasions. In 1888, she wrote a fairy tale entitled Schneewittchen [Snow White] and her brother supplied some songs for this piece. Further fairy tale collaborations followed which were customarily performed within the family circle, and the first draft of the Hänsel und Gretel was begun in 1890. Adelheid’s husband would be celebrating his 34th birthday on 16 May of this year and his wife intended to surprise him with a performance of her version of this fairy tale. Her brother was allotted the task of composing the accompanying songs and, a month before the birthday, she wrote a letter to him in Mainz where Engelbert Humperdinck was among other activities working as an editor for the Schott publishing house, ordering a “very pretty folkloric†Tanzlied [Dance song], a Waldlied [Forest song] (or Echolied [Echo song]), a Schlummerlied [Lullaby] and a Kickericki-Lied [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] from her “dear sugar-sweet little brother... Engel-Bärtchen [angel beard]â€. She enclosed the corresponding verses with the letter and “for fun†also provided her own invented melody for the Schlummerlied and rhythmic suggestions for the Tanzlied. Humperdinck went straight to work and, as related in an entry in his diary, was already able to play the songs to the director of the publishing house, Dr Ludwig Strecker, by 19 April.This was the history of origin of the four songs published for the first time edited in form of their original versions in this edition Brüderchen komm’ tanz’ mit mir, Wer ruft mir im Walde doch alles nach, In den Zweigen die Vögelein und Tirelireli! ‘s ist nicht mehr früh “for two children’s voices and piano accompaniment†(see manuscript1). In his reply letter to his sister in which the fair copy of the songs were enclosed, Humperdinck wrote: “As you see, the pitch of the melodies is not too high and I have incorporated your melodies. Let me know soon whether you like the little songs. By the way, the ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ can also be sung on one note(E flat) instead of on the four notes of the chord.â€The first performance of the song-play was held as planned within the family circle with Wettes’ two eldest daughters in the two principle roles. Spurred on by the success of the family performance, initial plans were forged to adapt the song-play into a singspiel with numerous musical numbers and rhymed dialogues; Hermann Wette participated in a draft of the text. The particell of this singspiel had been completed by Christmas 1890. Hugo Wolf and a few others however advised the composer to extend the singspiel into a through-composed fairy tale opera. Humperdinck followed this advice and worked on what he ironically termed as a “Kinderstubenweihfestspiel“ [sacred festive play for the nursery] during the next two summers in Bayreuth. Tanzliedchen [Dance song] and Morgenweckruf [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] were eventually included in the opera in a modified form.Bevor Engelbert Humperdincks Märchenoper Hänsel und Gretel zum Welterfolg wurde, hatte das Werk bereits eine vielschichtige Entstehungsgeschichte hinter sich. Humperdincks Schwester Adelheid Wette schrieb 1890 ein gereimtes Märchenspiel gleichen Namens, welches sie gemeinsam mit ihren Töchtern im Familienkreis aufführte. Ihr Bruder hatte die entsprechenden vier Lieder dazu beigesteuert.
