The beloved Miles Davis / Victor Feldman composition and title track for the 1963 Columbia recording featuring Miles, George Coleman (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums). This saxophone quintet with bass (electric is preferred, but upright could work) and drums opens with a funky hook figure and settles into a swinging, harmonized treatment of the melody. Chord changes are provided for the tenor sax soloist, who is accompanied by background figures performed by the other saxes. A challenging, Supersax-style soli takes place over the chord progression. A fun and lighthearted straight eighth waltz treatment of the melody gives way to swing and, finally, a return to the funky, swinging shuffle. Gene Wilder’s 1971 performance of this song in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory won the hearts of boys and girls dreaming of endless worlds of candy and fantasy. Gerhard Guter’s swinging jazz waltz rendition for big band with solo alto or bass vocalist breathes new life into this beloved tune. The introduction sets up a repeating harmonic pattern, which returns at various points during the arrangement, which gradually picks up steam and swing, unfolding in a lush cadence as the vocalist launches into the poignant lyric. Saxophone writing draws upon the usage of trills, across-the-barline quadruplets, and harmonized flourishes. Unison piano and (optional) vibraphone parts will bring to mind the musical code for entering Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Room. The orchestration benefits from a variety of dynamic shadings and the use of bucket mutes for the trombones and cup mutes for the trumpets. Dramatic moments are emphasized with mallets. This arrangement of the John Coltrane classic, which pays tribute to legendary jazz bassist and Miles Davis compatriot Paul Chambers, provides an exciting introduction, statement of the theme in varied textures, a challenging (optional) soli, and room for lots of energetic drum solos. Following an introductory figure reminiscent of Miles Davis and Victor Feldman’s well-known Seven Steps to Heaven collaboration, the arrangement features two optional background choruses to keep the blowing fresh and interesting. After the improvisation, the drums and piano drop out, sending off a challenging, optional soli (18 second mark in demo) featuring a doubled, walking vocal and acoustic bassline. As this section concludes, the acoustic bass drops out and the drums re-enter, propelling a fugal statement of the melody (25 second mark in demo). Following a return to the head, the arrangement modulates upward by whole step to its exciting conclusion. Piano, bass, and drums read off the included composite rhythm section part. Plenty of meter changes to keep things interesting; the writing may bring to mind some of the jazzier arrangements of the Canadian Brass, with a written walking tuba bassline. With the optional repeat, the chart weighs in at about three minutes, and could even be performed with both tuba and bass as the parts are virtually identical. The Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie bebop classic, Anthropology, is arranged here in a cool style reminiscent of writers such as Dave Pell. Arranged for nonet, but playable without the guitar and/or vibraphone parts, this treatment features a scat-style vocal atop piano, bass, and drums, with innovative backing figures provided by trumpet, alto sax, and trombone. Vocal is in an ideal key for male and/or female.Anthropology opens with a bass solo over (brush) drums. The first A features a vocal/vibes melody over a highly syncopated stop-time provided by guitar, bass, and drums. Horns enter in gliding unison figures, spreading into harmony, and provide lots of punch and counterpoint as the chart progresses. By way of metric modulation, an Afro-Cuban vamp is an inventive send off for each improvising soloist. In 1949, Miles Davis organized the recording of twelve arrangements for the Capitol label, including the composition Boplicity. The composition, popularized with the lyric Bebop Lives by the late, great Mark Murphy, was originally recorded by: Miles Davis (trumpet), Mike Zwerin (trombone), Bill Barber (tuba), Junior Collins (French horn), Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone), Lee Konitz (alto saxophone), John Lewis (piano), Al McKibbon (bass), and Max Roach (drums). This new treatment maintains the cool flavor of the tune/arrangement, but is scored for jazz voice (could be doubled at the octave by an additional singer) with fully notated syllables. Unlike the original arrangement, neither tuba nor horn are required. Instead, the conventional instrumentation consists of flugelhorn (or trumpet - no mutes), alto sax, trombone, vibraphone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Exciting twists include a multi-meter bridge section, which weaves in and out of 3/4. Improv section with backgrounds and room for multiple soloists. Changes are in all parts. Horn ranges are very accessible and this is a great opportunity for a singer who wants to perform this classic tune with their band. Demo performed and recorded by Gerhard Guter.

Though still a challenge, especially with the optional vocal soli, this Conniff-themed edition has been adapted from a more difficult version previously performed by Vocalogy on their 2005 Distilled release. The piece opens with a pulsating rhythm section figure as pianist, bassist, and drummer enter one by one. The wonderful moments of tension have been maintained beneath Rachmaninoff's soaringly romantic melody, and the wordless vocal provides an ethereal quality. With the optional soli, this is an Advanced level arrangement. There is room for improvising regardless of whether or not the soli is performed and, with no soli, this is an Advanced Intermediate arrangement.  Included individual piano, bass, and drum parts play from individual parts with chord symbols, slashes, and rhythmic notation.
