This Good Friday composition of 2 minutes uses the accompanying figure for the JS Bach composition A Voice Saith 'All Are Mortal' is used with this hymn with melody in pedal. The concept is by the men doing their job of performing crucifixions seem to have had no idea who was one of the men they were to crucify that day--Jesus was just another victim of their day's work. The voix celeste is indicated because if this were orchestrated in the baroque period, the accompanying figure would be strings so it is here. Great for congregations where music is restricted to hymns people know, also good for students learning use of pedalboard because slow meter yet relatively constant movement. Hymn tune: Herzliebster Jesu.

This Psalm setting would be perfect for Good Friday services or for use during Lent or other penitential seasons. It can be sung by a treble soloist, unison choir, soprano or tenor soloist. The accompaniment can be played on piano or organ (organ preferred) and is written in Baroque-style four parts which are distinct from the solo part. The melody uses the descending-second sighing technique to indicate the strong emotions of questioning and pleading with God. This would be a very effective solo or unison choir piece for Tenebrae or Good Friday.

The unique aspect of these short hymn-based offertories is their flexible length. When the offertory goes by quickly, as it does in a smaller church or even an efficient larger church, a pianist needs to be able to end a piece quickly, or extend it if there are a few more in attendance. This is a completely new SSA setting of Crossman’s wonderful text by Colin Kirkpatrick. In this setting there are opportunities for alto solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there is an a capella section in the middle. The highest note in the soprano part is one A flat above the treble staff. This is an accessible arrangement with rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines. It is sure to be a success at Easter occasions. Other SSA titles in this series of three Easter canticles are “Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142)†and “A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866â€. In the audio sample, soprano 1 is played by the flute, soprano 2 by the oboe and alto by the clarinet.

This is a simple E minor setting of the familiar Good Friday words, using a repeated binary structure, almost in the manner of an alternating verse/chorus form. The piece is a counterpart to Howard's own 2016 setting of the Ave Verum Corpus, with which it shares the same key (also available via Sheet Music Plus). The chorus displays a clearly morose yearning in its appoggiaturas, upward leap and consequent falling phrase. By contrast, the verse is almost a recitative, featuring tense repetitions on one tone above a series of chromatically descending triads and pedal point. The piece is appropriate for most standards of solo soprano or tenor. The accompaniment can be on piano or organ. Two other versions of this piece, for SATB choir, and for SA choir, are also available from Sheet Music Plus.
