Avatar: The Way of Water, is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film from 2009.  The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie.  From Darkness to Light is a beautiful instrumental piece in the movie that shows off the beauty of the water.  On paper, the music seems a little too simple, but the chord progressions together with the moving parts make for quite a beautiful and memorable piece.  This arrangement is scored for flute choir – piccolo with 4 C, alto, bass, and contrabass flutes.  There is an optional cello part that doubles the contrabass that can be played by any bass clef C instrument in a similar range.  One of the most important parts of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is where the part called “Shimmer†comes in.  In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes.  With that in mind, this is how the “Shimmer†part can be played:  Hang a few keys (house keys, car keys, etc.) that have different pitches on short lengths of string.  Use a small metal or wooden object to lightly hit the keys to create little “dingsâ€.  Be creative with this percussive part!  You can use whistle tones, a little xylophone, wind chimes, etc.  The idea is to create a magical mood without overpowering the music.  Play this part wherever there is a note in the measure.  Duration: 3.75 minutes.

'Into the Sunlight' (also known as 'Emergence') begins the grand finale sequence of Disney's animated classic, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). 'Into the Sunlight' uses melodies from the film's songs Out There, Heaven's Light, and Someday, while playing them as an emotional reprise - adding closure to the characters' storylines. This cue also references musical motifs for the character Phoebus. The score for The Hunchback of Notre Dame is regarded by many as being Alan Menken's magnum opus. With orchestrations by Danny Troob, the score for Hunchback is elevated by Menken's modern Broadway sensibility.Alan Menken's score for The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.This arrangement for solo piano is a reduction of the full orchestra, and is suited for Intermediate+ pianists. Avatar: The Way of Water, is the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film from 2009.  The soundtrack for the new film was written by Simon Franglen, who originally wrote 5 hours of music to cover any and all situations in the almost 3-hour movie.  From Darkness to Light is a beautiful instrumental piece in the movie that shows off the beauty of the water.  On paper, the music seems a little too simple, but the chord progressions together with the moving parts make for quite a beautiful and memorable piece.  This arrangement is scored for string orchestra - 3 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and double bass.One of the most important parts of this piece is what helps create the mood, which is where the part called “Shimmer†comes in.  In an interview, Simon Franglen said that an important part of the music is the feeling of light, and he achieved that by including shimmering sounds into his tunes.  The Shimmer part could be played by wind chimes.  Franglen mentioned that they used keys hanging from strings (car keys, house keys, etc) to create this effect among other creative objects-turned-instruments.Duration: 3.75 minutes.

Death is a common topic in his writings. Yet despite the somber imagery, there is often a strength and resilience. The journey of death is described, but not taken. Death is the adversary, not the ruler. The Hand that Signed the Paper speaks of the often cruel and deadly power of a signed document- a document of taxation, of treaty or of counting casualties. The five fingers mark the dead, but do not soothe. “Hands have no tears to flow.†And Death Shall Have No Dominion expresses the triumph of the human spirit over death. “Though lovers be lost love shall not.†Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night represents the fight against death. “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.†The musical expression of these poems places the voice in the low (dark) range. Tempi are slow, and minor keys are prevalent. Only occasionally are major tonalities presented. These passages combine with particularly uplifting phrases such as “Though they sink through the sea, they shall rise again†and “Wild men, who caught and sang the sun in flight…†Near the end of the last song, the poet addresses his deceased father: “And you, my father, there on the sad height...†The voice stays on a constant pitch while the harmony lifts beneath (to the heights), in the Lydian (raised) mode. [One might hear the voice as “perched atop†the rising chords.] This is one of the most personal lines of Dylan Thomas' poetry. As the poet speaks to his father, the climax of the song comes with the rising phrases of “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.†The final chords are dissonant, marked “with determination and triumph.†Duration: 10:10.
