Brass Ensemble Trombone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811269 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Ralph Sauer. Baroque,Classical. Score and parts. 80 pages. Gordon Cherry #6744877. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811269). Bach's Three-Part Inventions, BWV 787-801 (also known as Sinfonias) were composed in Köthen, Germany around the year 1720 for harpsichord. Each work is characterized by the contrapuntal working of a single melodic line. The fifteen short pieces cover eight major and seven minor keys.Bach included with the collection of the Two and Three-Part Inventions these instructions to students of music:Forthright instruction, wherewith lovers of the clavier, especially those desirous of learning, are shown in a clear way not only 1) to learn to play two voices clearly, but also after further progress 2) to deal correctly and well with three obbligato parts, moreover at the same time to obtain not only good ideas, but also to carry them out well, but most of all to achieve a cantabile style of playing, and thereby to acquire a strong foretaste of composition.Ralph Sauer has brilliantly arranged these great works for Three Trombones in one single collection (he first arranged these in the early 1970s in several volumes with different publishers and are now out of print) and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Brass Ensemble Trombone - Digital Download SKU: A0.928144 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by P. F. Strohm. Baroque,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 76 pages. Pete Strohm Music #5041137. Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928144). Volume II of this series, containing five J.S. Bach keyboard works from Inventions and Sinfonias, expertly arranged for three Trombones (2 Tenor 1 Bass). This edition contains tempos, ornamentation, articulation and dynamics to help guide players with less experience performing baroque music. Ornaments are authentic, either from Bach or his immediate students. Tempos, dynamics, and most articulations are my recommendations. The first trombone part is provided in both tenor and bass clef. There are also two sets of first and second parts, one with original ornaments and one with the ornaments realized in suggested notation, as well as a guide to interpreting ornaments. The Bass Trombone has no ornaments added. Performers are, of course, free to devise their own interpretations. Each volume of Bach for Trombone Trio is carefully compiled to work as a single, compatible set with a playing time under ten minutes, excellent for use in both contest and recital. Medium-Advanced level of difficulty. Performance time for all five works is 8:17. Member, ASCAP.

Trombone Duet Trombone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.792215 Composed by Bach Johann Sebastian. Arranged by Sauer, Ralph. Baroque,Classical,Renaissance,Romantic Period. Score. 32 pages. Gordon Cherry #4728839. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792215). Bach's 15 legendary Two Part Inventions, BWV 772-786, have been brilliantly transcribed for two Trombones by retired Los Angeles Philharmonic Principal Trombonist, Ralph Sauer. These works can be performed by 2 Tenor Trombonists or a Tenor & Bass Trombonist. All of the Inventions are in the original key and have been ornamented in the Baroque style by Mr. Sauer. The Inventions are perfect for addition to a recital or concert, or as a teaching tool and even just for fun in the practice room. Each of the 15 Inventions have been carefully laid out over two facing pages making the music easy to read. These works are for moderately advanced performers.

Trombone Duet Trombone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.792280 Composed by Bach, J. S. Arranged by Sauer, Ralph. Baroque,Classical,Renaissance. Score. 36 pages. Gordon Cherry #4803805. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792280). The Four Duets, BWV 802-805 are part of a larger collection, the Clavier-übung III sometimes called the German Organ Mass. They were first published in 1739, mostly likely intended to be performed on the organ, as they have a range from C2 to C6; playable on almost any organ from that era. However, they could have been performed on any keyboard of the time. Musically they are more complex than the Two Part Inventions, and their purpose was most likely to take two-part counterpoint to the max. • Fugue 1 is a double fugue in E minor • Fugue 2 is a fugue in F major written as a da capo aria (ABA) • Fugue 3 in G major is light and dance-like • Fugue 4 in A minor is a fugue in strict counterpoint Ralph Sauer has once again done an extraordinary job of finding great music for our instrument and transcribing it in the most beautiful way possible. Appropriate for advanced performers. Each player has their own part as well as a study score. The 2nd part may be performed on a tenor with f-attachment or a bass trombone.

Brass Ensemble Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1005663 Composed by J. S. Bach (1685-1750). Arranged by Rudy Volkmann. Concert. Score and parts. 5 pages. Rudy Volkmann #6384137. Published by Rudy Volkmann (A0.1005663). This is one of my favorites. I chose adapted, rather than arranged because in order to make it playable I had to leave out a few notes (carefully chosen) in order to give the brass players a spot or two to breathe. For the real 'horses, the written arrangement leaves these in with the breaths notes in parenthesis; the mp3 audio file leaves them out. The Sinfonia (three-part inventions) of J. S. Bach were written as keyboard teaching pieces for his children. As such, most pianists whir through them at often blistering tempi, often obscuring the wonderful music contained therein. This adaptation suggests a much more moderate tempo, and allows the timbre of the three instruments to differentiate the three voices and the wonderful counterpoint which makes up the piece. This is a great recital piece or concert opener.

Baritone Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549893 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 23 pages. Jmsgu3 #3603411. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549893). Score: 12 pages, piano part: 6 pages, baritone sax part: 4 pages. duration: ca. 5'. Mendelssohn: Wedding March Mendelssohn’s Wedding March is so popular that it’s difficult to imagine a wedding without it. It seems like it’s been around for eternity. In any case, it was only 150 years or so ago that the Wedding March came about. It was performed in Potsdam for the first time in 1842, as a piece of Mendelssohn’s music for the Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was first used for a wedding in 1858 Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. To summarize, his most famous works include his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides Overture, his later Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, and his Octet for Strings. His most well-known piano pieces, by and large, are the Songs Without Words. Artistic Standing Musical tastes change from time to time. Moreover, just such a change occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This plus rampant antisemitism brought a corresponding amount of undue criticism. Fortunately, however, his artistic inventiveness has indeed been critically re-evaluated. As a result, Mendelssohn is once again among the most prevalent composers of the Romantic era. Early Family Life Mendelssohn was, in fact, born into a prominent Jewish family. His grandfather was, notably, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was, in fact, raised without religion. At the age of seven, he was all of a sudden baptized as a Reformed Christian. He was, moreover, a child musical prodigy. Nevertheless, his parents did not attempt to exploit his talent. Early Adulthood Mendelssohn was, in general, successful in Germany. He conducted, in particular, a revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically with his presentation of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Felix was truly in demand throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. For example, he visited Britain ten times. There, he premiered, namely, many of his major works. His taste in music was. To be sure, inventive and well-crafted yet markedly conservative. This conservatism separated him by all means from more audacious musical colleagues like Liszt, Wagner, and Berlioz. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatoire which, to clarify, became a defender of this conservative viewpoint. Mature Adulthood Schumann notably wrote that Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them. This observation points to a couple of features in particular that illustrate Mendelssohn's works and his artistic procedure. Musical Features In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his methodical mastery of the style of preceding masters. This being said, he certainly recognized and even developed early romanticism from the music of Beethoven and Weber. Secondly, it indicates that Mendelssohn sought to strengthen his inherited musical legacy rather than to exchange it with new forms and styles or replace it with exotic orchestration. Consequently, he diverged his contemporaries in the romantic period, such as Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt. Mendelssohn revered Liszt's virtuosity at the keyboard but found his music rather insubstantial.Register for free lifetime revisions and updates at www.jamesguthrie.com &n.

Rudy Volkmann #6403133. Published by Rudy Volkmann (A0.1005666). This is another of my favorites in the series.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869355). Instrumentation: solo alto saxophone & 2222-4231-perc-drumset-strings. Program note. Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. The second movement is a boss nova: as in the Stan Getz album, Grace does not have a written part but improvises over a set of chord changes provided by the orchestra. The third and last movement is an Afro-Cuban groove in six-eight: Grace has a written melody at first but soon launches into improvisation on a 12-bar blues in F. She ends the concerto in a free cadenza to show off her virtuosity and saxophone chops. ENJOY!!!

Piano,Trombone - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549502 Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 20 pages. Jmsgu3 #3501861. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549502). Score: 11 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 5 pages. Duration: 4:20. This is a popular recital piece that would work well also in church or school programs. Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician, and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. At the age of seven, he was suddenly baptized as a Reformed Christian. There, he premiered, namely, many of his significant works. Musical Features In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his systematic mastery of the style of preceding masters. Mendelssohn revered Liszt's virtuosity at the keyboard but found his music rather insubstantial.

Woodwind Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.550555 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Christmas,Easter,Standards. 67 pages. Jmsgu3 #4735777. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550555). The 15 Two-Part Inventions BWV 772-786, arranged for Alto & Baritone Sax. The historical context of Bach's 15 Two-Part Inventions is rooted in their didactic purpose and significance in developing keyboard technique and musical expression. Composed around 1720, these pieces were part of Bach's Klavierbüchlein, a collection of 62 short works for keyboard compiled for his nine-year-old son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The Inventions were designed as exercises to teach two-part playing, familiarize students with musical ideas, and provide a taste of composition. They were structured with care, with the first three based on scales, the following three on broken chords, and a combination of both in the final piece, almost resembling a fugue in form. Bach's Inventions are experiments on musical ideas and a new way of combining lines, reflecting his didactic aim and providing a clear path for students to learn to play cleanly in two parts and acquire a strong foretaste of composition. The inventions' musical elements, composition, and piano technique can be effectively learned and expressed through different instruments. The adaptability of Bach's Two-Part Inventions to various instruments allows for a broader exploration of musical ideas and will enable instrumentalists to develop their technical and expressive abilities.

Brass Ensemble Euphonium - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.726704 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Ralph Sauer. Baroque,Classical. Score and parts. 80 pages. Gordon Cherry #334978. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.726704). Bach's Three-Part Inventions, BWV 787-801 (also known as Sinfonias) were composed in Köthen, Germany around the year 1720 for harpsichord. Each work is characterized by the contrapuntal working of a single melodic line. The fifteen short pieces cover eight major and seven minor keys. Bach included with the collection of the Two and Three-Part Inventions these instructions to students of music: Forthright instruction, wherewith lovers of the clavier, especially those desirous of learning, are shown in a clear way not only 1) to learn to play two voices clearly, but also after further progress 2) to deal correctly and well with three obbligato parts, moreover at the same time to obtain not only good ideas, but also to carry them out well, but most of all to achieve a cantabile style of playing, and thereby to acquire a strong foretaste of composition. Ralph Sauer has newly arranged these fifteen small masterpieces for three euphoniums in one single collection. which is appropriate for advanced performers.

Downloadable, Study score. Duration 9 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q45427. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q45427). Written in 2010 for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Wigglesworth's nine-minute work explores the idea of perpetuum mobile (continuous movement) in seven connected, miniature inventions. A regular pulse forms the work’s core, with elaborations of the central musical idea shifting constantly around it in jagged rhythms and sumptuous orchestration. The composer writes, The seven sections can very briefly be described thus: 1) an active, miniature 'theme and variations'; 2) the juxtaposition of various fragmentary two-part inventions; 3) a tremolo string ostinato with woodwind interjections, building towards the first climax; 4) an ostinato passing between horns and muted trumpets together with a dialogue for high woodwind and low strings; 5) a very slow canon for string harmonics and pizzicato double basses; 6) a fast, one-part invention beginning with solo piccolo, and gradually leading to the second climax; 7) chorale. This is a lively orchestral miniature which gives the impression of a kaleidoscope, with short musical ideas cutting across each other in quick succession.

Now even recorder players can enjoy the well-known and popular collection of little compositions, the two-part inventions by Johann Sebastian Bach, in this new publication for recorder duet. The task of arranging the works was made easier by the author as the compositions for two hands, in the original version written for a keyboard instrument, contain exclusively one-part melodies. It therefore sufficed to transpose only the left hand to the treble clef. Then other passages had to be adapted to the range of the two recorders by means of octave transposition. These changes have not spoilt the charm and attractiveness of the polyphonic works; on the contrary, they have led to a beautiful collection of recorder duets.
