Published by Jason Allan Taurins (A0.934482). Moondances is a set of 6 bagatelles for trumpet and piano. Aimed at the advancing high school or college trumpet player, the six movements can be played in their entirety or in subsets. At 8:30 in length, it would be perfect for a recital!The musical material for much of the piece is based on pieces I wrote for my undergraduate composition courses at Western Michigan University, but reworked and expanded. The fifth and sixth movements are entirely brand new music I composed to round out the suite. Underpinning all movements is a dark and sad feeling, but with rhythmic energy.Movement I, titled Moondrunk, is a reference to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. It’s an absurd, dissonant, and drunk-feeling dance. Movement II, A Stroll in the Moonlight, shows off the lyrical, expressive, and reflective nature of the trumpet with cup mute. The title is a reference to Hogwarts teacher Professor Lupin, who, within the Harry Potter universe, is a werewolf. The music does not reflect this. In Movement III, Death Dances in the Dark, I experimented with using a highly-chromatic melody which is incorrectly harmonized by D minor chords. The piano and trumpet combine at shocking points in octaves and rhythmic unison to create an unsettling effect. Movement IV, titled Melancholy Memories, is based on a movement of a song cycle I wrote in college. It is at points lovely and unsettling, with a sense of nostalgia.Movement V, titled Dimensions (Pablo’s Dream), is a tribute to my love of the paintings of Pablo Picasso. His cubist works attempted to show multiple perspectives of objects simultaneously. The whole movement is a large palindrome, with smaller palindromes placed in it. To accomplish this musically, I used a twelve-tone row, parallelism in the piano part, and various palindromes in the form. The row is intervallically the same forward and backward. I composed the rhythmic material in the first section stream-of-conscious style, and filled in the pitches. The piano accompaniment is in parallel major chords on each note of the row. The melody at letter H uses the row transposed up a tritone, and parallel minor chords in the accompaniment.The final movement, Chase, shows off the virtuosity of the trumpeter. A common theme of dreams is the chase. These are often quite terrifying, at least in my experience. The back-and-forth nature of chases is explored rhythmically in the opening bars. Phrases of different length and dissonant harmonies are unsettling. A bold cry of terror is heard throughout the movement, harmonized by a chord with a perfect fifth and an augmented fifth. Descending and ascending scales wake up the terrified dreamer, and the music never fully resolves.

There are direct (if not always obvious) quotations to the following songs:       Anita Ward’s “Ring My Bellâ€Â       “Night Fever†by the Bee Gees       Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive†(Just had to be included)       Lipps Inc’s “Funktownâ€Â       and “Boogie Nights†from HeatwaveThe ancient dance form known as the pavane is, weirdly enough, the perfect pairing with the disco…in that their rhythmic structures easily go together, allowing me to spread the disco material around throughout the piece. In fact, the references to “I Will Survive†are in the slower pavane section, not the disco.The piece is basic A-B-A form (Disco-Pavane-Disco) with a fadeout ending…because in all my research I don’t remember finding a single disco piece that didn’t have a fadeout ending. It just wasn’t done. Please have some fun listening to this piece, because I had a great time writing it. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever written..pdf contains a complete set of score and parts. With the long pianissimo to forte crescendo at the introduction, the contrasting forte/mezzo piano sections and brisk, shorter crescendos for the cadences, the tubist must be aware of dynamics at all time and use them wisely.The second aspect to performing this piece is to contrast the 2 eighth note plus quarter note slurs motif against the arpeggiations. The introduction starts with the slurs and evolves into the arpeggiations by the first forte and the remaining piece explores the contrast between the two. Performers should feel free to try different dynamics, try different tempos (like zipping through the arpeggiations and slowing for the motif), etc. The goal is to bring the listener through the pleasantries of introductions to feel fresh and eager for further discourse ahead. March The rewarding challenge in this piece is to bring out the difference between cheery and con brio. The former being achieved by emphasizing the swaggering, strutting feel of the one-measure-per-beat feel and the latter by emphasizing the intervallic bounciness with the one-two march feel.Note that the motif (with the quarter note morphing into an eighth note) along with simpler arpeggiations are brought to play in a new manner reinforcing the positive mood from the prelude.The goal is to befriend the listener with an engaging, buoyant time. Air The tubist will exercise great breath control and phrasing to achieve a sublime solemnness counterbalancing the prior two movements.The motif now takes center stage headlining the main melodic phrases; however, here it is disjointed and conveys the sighing for the solemnness.After the pleasantness of the march, affableness having garnered friendship, we now open ourselves to share some somber matters and offer consolation. The intended goal here is to add depth to the relationship by addressing darker aspects in the discourse. Slip-jig Rondo Harking back to the compound meter of the prelude, this dance adventurously wakens the listener from the solemnness of the air asserting a new grandness and gladness. This is a slip-jig put into the rondo form so celebrate the main dance theme when it comes around and put fire and character into the transitions to make it worthwhile.The motif now jumps into the compound meter’s beat and morphs into three slurred, conjoint eighth notes. Now this motif enables several affects: exciting dance steps, transitions/modulations and concluding the phrases and the piece itself.The performer should aim to lead and amaze the listener with the waltz-like slip-jig rhythm and astound with the virtuosic transitions as a final send-off.
