There is a theory that El grillo refers to Carlo Frillo, a singer who worked for the same patron as Josquin, Cardinal Galeazzo Sforza, and that it was intended to remind the prelate that his musicians’ salaries were overdue. The Sforzas were apparently notoriously mean to their employees, in spite of (or possibly because of) the fact that one of them was happy to pay a large sum of money for a parrot that could recite the Creed. Certainly the words of this little piece, with their reference to the cricket who sings for love, seem to have a good deal more impact in this sardonic light. Although the piece is similar in form to many other frottole, it is really quite unlike most such works, especially the way the repeated notes are used for comic effect.  In this instrumental arrangement I have add several decorations and divisions, to illustrate the words behind it, and also just for fun.El grillo è buon cantoreche tiene lungo verso.Dalle beve grillo canta.Ma non fa come gli altri uccelli,come li han cantato un pocovan' de fatto in altro loco,  sempre el grillo sta pur saldoQuando la maggior è l' caldoalhor canta sol per amore.[suggested English paraphrase]The cricket is a good singerand he sings for a long timeGive him a drink so he can go on singingBut he doesn't do what the other birds doWho after singing a littleJust go elsewhere.  The cricket is always steadfastWhen the weather is hottest,   then he sings just for lovePerformed by The Budapest Scoring Clarinet Ensemble.

The culmination of years of playing for funerals, a bachelor degree in theology and sacred music, and many more years of writing and playing music through good times and also times full of grief, Lord of All Our Days is my very best and heartfelt attempt to serve those who are also dealing with the absolute heartache of loss, be it the acute, fresh grieving of just losing someone or the flashbacks that come time and time again, years and even decades later.This song carefully and tenderly handles the true earth-shaking grief that it is to lose someone you love, while holding out a strong hope of the life to come for those who trust God. I had a very difficult time recording it without being moved to tears over and over, and I pray it will reach many in need of comfort, being of service to anyone who is looking for a Christian, Biblical funeral hymn for a memorial service or a celebration of life service. This is the exact guitar version I used to record the Outdoor Acoustic Version of Lord of All Our Days, as heard on all streaming platforms. It is intended for use as a burial song, sung softly and reverently accompanied by a quiet guitar at the internment portion of a funeral service if music is desired at the graveside. I recommend playing it on capo 3 to match the original or a few higher to match your voice. You may also prefer to get the other version in C major and save using a capo. This version is just easier for a slightly more beginner guitarist. One other recommendation is to play it even lower so people can sing very quietly, i.e. capo 1 or even no capo at all, depending on the voice of the person leading the song.Also available, by searching Stacey Plays Hymns and the song title on this site, are the following versions:Piano Vocal in Bb Minor to match the original recording [vocal range: Bb3-Bb4]Piano Vocal in C Major for easier playing and a better congregational vocal rangeLead Sheet for piano or guitar in C Major - best key for singing without a capoA backup music mp3 track for soloists to perform with in a service, including the full backup choral arrangement.For other formats including large print, a different key to match a soloist's preferred range, or piano solo for a matching prelude or postlude, please write me at staceyplayshymns@gmail.com and I'll be glad to make them especially for you. Remember the 80's? One of my favorite memories was President Ronald Reagan, a well-loved man that made America a better place. This song is a tribute to our former president. Written in C minor, this late intermediate piano solo is a fun jazz/blues piece played in a swing rhythm complete with fingering, triplets (quarter, eighth, and 16th note), grace notes, and left hand broken octaves that walk up and down the bass section of the piano. The bridge changed to the relative Major of Eb and is an old-time (Happy Days style) rock-n-roll. I think you'll have a lot of fun playing this piece as well as getting some toes tapping. Students who have played my Ukrainian Bell Carol arrangement for the beginner level readily recognize the hand positions as well as the fingering for the eighth note run. The chords are comfortable for the student to learn yet at the same time lend a richness to the piece. My late elementary students love to play this during the holiday season; some even ask to learn it in the middle of the summer, just for fun. This is based on a well-known French canon concerning a seller of coco (a refreshing drink of liquorice and lemon water)This particular seller sold his goods when they were not really fresh.The coco sellers were active in the 18th and 19th Centuries, especially in Paris and Brussels but the custom faded out by the beginning of the 20th century (presumably with the advent of ice cream and ice lolly (popsicle) sellers)I have made these variations on the canon for advanced players, including beatbox and flutter tongue techniques - and just for fun - a bit of stamping.
