Murray published this verse and called it “Luther’s Cradle Hymn, composed by Martin Luther for his children, and still sung by German mothers to their little ones.” Incidentally, Martin Luther, the famous father of the Reformation, was not the author, nor was Murray. The origin is a children’s Sunday school book published a few years before Murray’s attribution. The verses have been set to a number of tunes, but this arrangement is set to Murray’s own tune, called “Mueller.”.

Score. 3 pages. Justin Kenlon Reeve #1078230. Published by Justin Kenlon Reeve (A0.1502425). “Little Drummer Boy,” originally titled “Carol of the Drum,” is based on a traditional Czech carol. In 1957, Henry Onorati arranged the song for a recording by the Jack Halloran Singers, but it was not released in time for Christmas. The next year, Harry Simeone was looking for material to create a Christmas album, and Onorati introduced him to the “Carol of the Drum.” Simeone re-arranged the song, retitled it “The Little Drummer Boy,” and recorded it with the Harry Simeone Chorale on the album Sing We Now of Christmas. The song is the story of a young shepherd boy who joins the procession of the wise men and other humble admirers to the Savior’s manger. When the boy reaches the gathering, others present gifts, but all the boy can afford is his gift of making music on his drum. Over 200 versions of this song in at least seven languages have been written.In September 1977, an additional track was recorded for Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas television special, performed by Crosby and David Bowie. According to co-writer Ian Fraser, Bowie balked at singing “Little Drummer Boy.” “I hate this song. Is there something else I could sing?” Fraser recalls Bowie telling him. Fraser, along with songwriter Larry Grossman and the special’s scriptwriter, Buz Kohan, then wrote the “Peace on Earth” lyrics as a counterpoint to “Little Drummer Boy.” Crosby performed “Little Drummer Boy,” while Bowie sang the new tune “Peace on Earth,” which they reportedly performed after less than an hour of rehearsal. Crosby never lived to see his performance on television, as he died a month after recording. The show aired in November 1977 on CBS.

In the late 1600s and early 1700s, Germany was predominantly Lutheran and experiencing a religious movement known as the Pietistic Revival. The Pietists emphasized living a virtuous Christian life, and encouraged their followers to express their devotion by writing hymns.Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel was part of this movement, and likely came from an aristocratic family. She also may have belonged to an evangelical women’s seminary. Born in 1697, Katharina was a talented published poet and penned at least 20 hymns, including Be Still, My Soul. The text was sung to many different tunes, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that it was paired with its current melody.Johann Julius Christian Sibelius, later known as Jean Sibelius, was a Finnish composer and violinist credited with having helped Finland create a national identity in the early 20th century during its struggle for independence from Russia. In 1899, he wrote a symphonic poem as a covert protest against Russian censorship. While much of the piece is energetic, representing the Finnish people’s national struggle, toward the end the serene melody of Finlandia is introduced. Finlandia became a national favorite when Sibelius reworked it into a standalone piece. Sibelius composed prolifically, but he also spent time reworking many of his old compositions. In 1927, Katharina’s hymn text was paired with Finlandia, and it remains the most well-known musical melody for the hymn today.

CAROL OF THE DRUM - 6 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes Carol Of The Drum is the official title, but many people know this as “The Little Drummer Boyâ€.This charming piece was written comparatively recently and has enjoyed being covered, re-arranged, beefed up and slimmed down by dozens of famous performers from Bing Crosby to Justin Bieber and many more besides.My arrangement suits a sextet or a large ensemble, and the complexity of the parts range from almost complete beginner up to early intermediate. I’ve suggested that this piece grows in volume throughout the 3 verses that I’ve arranged, and to support this, the number of notes each part has gradually increases, so that the notes have less time to die away before they are replaced. So part of the build in volume happens automagically!There are no page turns. The soundfile alongside the score is from the 3rd verse where you can hear that the sound is becoming busy and powerful. Guitar 6 requires the bottom string tuned down to D. I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
