Small Ensemble Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956665 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Celtic,Concert,Standards. Score and parts. 24 pages. C Melville-Mason #6747861. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956665). Skye Boat Song (Over the Sea to Skye) An intermediate-level woodwind arrangement of this favourite Scottish melody, featuring Horn in E-flat or F. The tune may be familiar to some as the theme from Outlander. The piece is scored for the following: · Part 1: Flute · Part 2: Oboe · Part 3: Clarinet in B-flat · Part 4: Clarinet in B-flat · Part 5: Clarinet in B-flat · Part 6: Bassoon OR Part 6: Bass Clarinet in B-flat · Part 7: Tenor Horn in E-flat (Alto Sax) OR Part 7: Horn in F (Cor Anglais) This arrangement was originally created for a small wind course at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye, with 1 – 2 players per part and featuring E-flat horn. There are some alternative options for the feature part – the version in E-flat could instead by played by Alto Saxophone, while there is also a version in F which could be played by French Horn or Cor Anglais. Also included are optional easier ‘add-on’ parts for Flute/Oboe, Clarinet in B-flat/Soprano Saxophone, Low Clarinet in B-flat, Tenor Saxophone, Mini-bassoon (in F or G) and Bassoon – ideal if your group contains a few less-adept players. These should be used sparingly, however! The cover photo shows the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale, which brought some of the students ‘Over the Sea to Skye’ for the first performance of this particular arrangement of the Skye Boat Song.

Skye refers to the Island of Skye, a large island off the northwest coast os Scotland. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. Scholars attribute the first half of the melody to an old se chantey and suspect thea the second half may have benn written by Annie MacLeod. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #948821. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1364529). This is one of the most well-known of all British folksongs and refers to real historical events. It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.   The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.   In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers.  The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. In this arrangement for violin and piano, much of the piece is playable in first position and uses the lower register.

In this lovely arrangement for B flat clarinet and piano, the piece begins in B flat concert, entirely in the clarinet's low register. The second section modulates to concert F mostly in the high register with the highest note being the C just above the treble staff. Movement around the break has been avoided. The arrangement is about UK ABRSM Grade 3 standard and it would make a splendid and rewarding addition to the repertoire of the young clarinet player.

Published by Elizabeth Sutherland (A0.902283). The Skye Boat Song is a late 19th-century Scottish song recalling the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government troops after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.Sir Harold Boulton, 2nd Baronet composed the lyrics to an air collected by Anne Campbelle MacLeod in the 1870s, and the line Over the Sea to Skye is now a cornerstone of the tourism industry on the Isle of Skye. This arrangement uses the original lyrics, rather than the second version written later by Robert Louis Stevenson. Written for Celtic Harp and Voice, but also suitable for Piano and Voice.

Piano,Trombone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.792108 Composed by Nicholas Francis. Contemporary. Score and part. 22 pages. Gordon Cherry #3451987. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792108). The Skye Boat Song, among the most popular of all Scottish folk tunes, deals with the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stewart) from Scotland to the Isle of Skye in 1746, after having been defeated on Culloden Moor by the English Army of King George II. The present setting, for either Tenor or Bass Trombone and Piano, is mostly lyrical and passes through a series of episodes that evoke watery images in various ways. A stormy episode which superimposes a more martial tune (relying heavily on the familiar scotch snappy rhythm) against a variation of the original folk tune leads to brief quotations from Mendelssohn’s Hebrides overture (the Isle of Skye is part of the group of islands known as the Hebrides) before a short recapitulation of the theme.
