EMK Music #28853. Published by EMK Music (A0.834008). Before he died in 1918, Debussy had been planning to visit the USA. However, it is probable that he became familiar with the syncopated rhythms of ‘Ragtime’ and of the ‘Cakewalk’, used in Le Petit Negre, through the music of Scott Joplin. Le Petit Negre is taken from Debussy’s ‘Children’s Corner’ , a collection of pieces for Piano that he dedicated to his daughter, Claude-Emma, after her death at the age of fourteen. Debussy used language that was in common usage at the time, but some of his titles, including this one, now sound unavoidably racist. In addition to syncopation, Debussy also uses other techniques in this piece that have been adopted by jazz musicians, for example, pentatonic scales and chromaticism.

I arranged this piece many years ago for the Mistral Saxophone Quartet and it has languished in a drawer for so long that I almost forgot about it. It was one of many arrangements I made at that time when the repertoire for saxophone quartet was very limited. It’s a jaunty little piece, originally for piano, and still a popular concert item – often used as an encore. I’ve tried to distribute the interest around the players: the trick is to blend as much as possible in the legato passages – the honky sounds are deliberate, so have some fun!

Debussy definitely wrote lovely compositions. Here are three short pieces arranged for clarinet quartet (4 Bb clarinets). It includes Le petit negre, Dieu qu?il la fait bon regarder, and Morceau de concours. Debussy?s music is beautiful when played with the idea of creating an atmosphere, so this is best for the quartet that has that ability.
