It was written and sung by bass player Peter Cetera and released as a single on July 31, 1976. It is also the title of a Chicago compilation album released by Columbia Records (Columbia 38590) in 1983.The single topped the US charts on October 23, 1976, and stayed there for two weeks, making it the first number one hit for the group as well as hitting number one on the Easy Listening charts.[4] If You Leave Me Now was also Chicago's biggest hit internationally, topping the charts in other countries such as the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, and Netherlands. When I composed this piece, autumn had just arrived and all the leaves were swaying gently in the trees; a strong wind would only knock a few down. When this would happen, I followed each leave's trail as it made it's way to the ground. It was simple, but it was beautiful. As autumn continued to ravage the trees, more and more of their leaves would fall, until it seemed anywhere you looked, a leaf was falling. The imagery of that autumn inspired this piano solo. I like to imagine this simple piece is for a pair of leaves that drift down, dancing, to the ground.

Sometimes it was used to air their gripes about the trip, quality of the food etc(!) so I have chosen some of the less sweary verses from the ones I found, and edited slightly in places!It's arranged in four parts for a cappella community choir. I've scored it out as the tenors and basses leading and all parts joining on the refrain, but you can have everyone singing the lead in unison if you want.
