Whispers of MortalityFourth Piano Sonata (2005) was commissioned by and is dedicated to pianist Donna Amato.The work is in three movements, each using the exact same musical material. Eachmovement presents a trajectory towards a greater integration of the disparate pieces ofmaterial.The first movement, Mourning at Sunset, presents the basic material in clearly definedblocks. An opening section of forceful, declamatory chords alternates with a more lyricalsection of interlocking lines. The forceful music returns before a slow, desolate section ispresented. This builds to a small climax before dying down again. The opening then returns.The second movement, Beyond Distant Echoes, is slow and ethereal. Sounds of distant gongsalternate with brittle, spasmodic interjections.The third movement, Whispers of Mortality, is inspired by the finale of Frederic Chopin'sPiano Sonata in B-flat minor. It is fast and fleeting and too short. The musical materialhas transformed into pure running roulades of raw notes. The movement evaporates into theuppermost register.

It was written by guitarist Kerry Livgren, who was inspired by a Native American poem containing the line “For all we are is dust in the wind”.The music came from a picking exercise he was doing that his wife suggested he make a song out of. It was the last addition to the album. “Dust In The Wind” was a top 10 hit in the US and Canada in the spring of 1977 and remains the biggest hit of their career. My brother died suddenly in 2011 at the age of 42. He left all of us behind including his daughters, my nieces, when they were ages six years and six months. My father and mother died a short time later, within months of each other in 2013 and 2014. Finally, in 2017 my 27-year-old nephew died of a drug overdose. This intense period of loss brought and continues to bring about many feelings of regret in addition to so much more. When my nephew died, my son Jonah, developed an intense anxiety about losing us, his parents. I felt compelled to express my feelings, the fear of my own mortality, the anxiety of leaving behind loved ones, combined with words said and unsaid to those lost. “Love letters†is my gift to the six young people I care most about. Through text and music as sound material: the choice of the German tongue as a philosophic language; in its sonority, the reference to the tradition of Lieder, a form where word and sound construct a system of meanings in search of the essential. Materializing it through sound, the works achieve this “concentration†of the essential, guided by the question of the “being.†But, how do they achieve it? Long phrases, almost Gregorian rhythmicity, recuperate the capacity for enunciation born of medieval liturgical chant and Buddhist mantras. The concentration of power in the invoked words – to enunciate is to make real what is invoked. The essence is enunciated in the concept, in the construction of the enunciations that constitute the exoskeleton of these songs. The sound materializes the concept; it is sound that creates reality. The sound is in the center of the congealed hurricane. A person that asks the question of “beingâ€, stops time. Their presence is now; only the now exists. Paul said, These introspective, tender, piano compositions have a minimal style of music reflecting the growing pains of a beautifully complex world. I'm alive because beating in my chest is the heart of of deceased man, thanks to organ donation. I understand that life is filled with irony, misconceptions, confusion, and yet darkness can't exist in the light. Our mortality is also filled with so much beauty, joy, serendipitous relationships. I want to capture all of these emotions in my music and hope it may will comfort and offer hope to listeners. Cardall's compositions have evolved in the two decades he's been recording piano music. His style and technique have evolved into a modern Classical style. He gives you a very strong grounding in his piano skills. Each composition has a concise structure, simple compositional techniques, manageable technical requirements and basic harmonies. Pieces are thought-provoking melodies, subtle and feature simple powerful string accompaniments. In addition, Cardall employs a minimalist approach that includes repetitive patterns or pulses, steady drones, consonant harmony, and reiteration of musical phrases or smaller units.
