This short piano piece is the first in a series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely music from early Nineties eight-bit gaming systems like Nintendo. This early-intermediate level composition is meant to be reminiscent of the themes from the game Contra, although I only drew upon distant memories of what those themes sound like. More important was the attitude and ethos of the game, which could be summed up by the words fight for your life! Although the texture of the arrangement is thin, the syncopated rhythms are a bit challenging for younger students and the antiphonic relationship between hands requires careful counting and coordination. Octaves are used throughout in the left-hand. .

Fein, whose father lived at this address on a street in South Philadelphia, she found mystical attachment to this number. When she died, I wrote this piece in her memory, and used these numbers in subtle ways to create the work. Melomanie performed and recorded the work on their CD Flourescence under its original title, Partita 622 [sic]. The harpsichord should be tuned as close to equal temperament as possible if playing with modern instruments, but a slight tinge of mean tone is highly acceptible. Chi passa per ’sta stradaThe sixteenth-century Italian composer, Filippo Azzaiolo (1530-1569), published three books of villotas (secular songs). In the first of these, Primo libro de villotte alla padoana a quattro voci, the first song (also the most popular) was Chi passa per ’sta strada (He who passes down this street). An exquisite chord sequence provide the basis for a simple melody, together with a set of variations I composed.The left-hand part (quite odd really, as I don’t play any keyboard instrument, but I’m sure you know what I mean!) shows the chords as I would play them on an octave mandola or a bouzouki (both tuned GDAE, one octave below mandolin or violin), and the chord diagrams show my fingerings for these. Other accompanists can simply use the chords’ letter names, also included, and work out their own fingerings/voicings. However, I strongly recommend keeping accompaniment simple and percussive, accentuating the rhythm, allowing the mandolin or other lead instrument space in which to play those variations.

St. Helens Suite for trombone and organ takes its inspiration from the hymn tune DUKE STREET (paired with the text “Jesus Shall Reignâ€) by John Hatton, who lived on Duke Street in St. Helens, UK. The suite was meant to have dual purpose as a concert piece and as music for worship services. Each of the first three movements contains fragments of the hymn tune. The first movement, Exordium, is built upon three main ideas that alternate, one of which is the second phrase of DUKE STREET. Aria dolorosa takes its opening melody from the musical motive which appears in bar 32 of the fourth movement, which was composed first. The first phrase of the hymn tune is folded into the Aria, but may not be recognizable because of its Dorian mode and slightly altered rhythm. The Capriccio ritmico is brief and quirky, showcasing some unusual tone colors on the organ, staccato technique on the trombone, and incorporates the third and fourth phrases of the hymn tune. Finally, the Toccata energica merges trombone melodies with toccata-style figurations in the organ, and the full hymn tune, though rhythmically altered, is finally heard in the second half of the toccata.

These two dances are taken from a collection entitled Recueil de danseries, contenant presque toutes sortes de danses (“Collection of dances, containing almost every kind of dancesâ€) published in Antwerp in 1583 by Pierre Phalèse Jnr (c.1545-1629). He was continuing the work of his father Pierre Phalèse the Elder (1510-1575) the most important publisher in the Low Countries during the 16th century. The piece known as Ungaresca evokes the atmosphere of street music rather than that of the court and the drone accompaniment that Phalèse provides suggests the sound of the peasant bagpipes. As the name implies, the dance came from Hungary though it may have simply been a dance in the Hungarian style. Even so, the melody was tremendously popular during the fifteenth century though the author is unknown. The dance calls for a lively performance, and you can use plenty of percussion to enliven it. This music was meant for dancing and entertainment and musicians would often combine several dances to make a more substantial piece. In this arrangement, the rather wild Ungaresca is paired with the stately Almande Poussinghe. The music would have been played by any instruments that happened to be available. The dances still retain their freshness and charm today and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. This arrangement is for virtually any string ensemble and the single PDF file includes a full score and parts for violin 1, violin 2, viola (violin 3), cello and bass (combined), keyboard and simple percussion. Two additional melody part are provided in the treble and bass clefs and the chords (for optional guitar) are shown in both keyboard and cello-bass parts. In the spirit of the original publication, you can add to the melody line any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. Even the additional of a couple of recorders will enhance the sound. Alternatively, you can do opposite and create a pleasing contrast by omitting various instruments for certain sections. The audio demo will give you an idea how this might be achieved. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible, the keyboard player should feel free to improvise around the part and the chords shown.
