Londonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. Make Room For Daddy).<br> <br> "Danny Boy" was used to represent Northern Ireland at the start of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, sung by a choir of children on the Giant’s Causeway.<br> <br> On November 25, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks used the song in honor of the recently deceased Pat Quinn, who played and worked in many executive capacities for the team.<br> <br> There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy". Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora.<br> <br> The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherly’s intent.<br> <br> Why the name Londonderry Air? Londonderry and Derry refer to the same place, a city in the north of Ireland, and also to the surrounding county. Supposedly the city of Derry was founded by St. Colmcille, although archaeological evidence shows that people were living there thousands of years earlier. There is an excellent museum in the city, which is worth a visit if you want to find out more. The name of the city was actually "Doire", corrupted to "Derry" by people who can’t pronounce Irish. It thought to derive from an Irish root meaning "oak tree".<br> <br> Moving quickly along in history, about a millenium later the government of England was having a difficult time colonizing Ireland because of the fierce and warlike clans living there, especially in the north of the country, Ulster. The monarchs of England, almost all of whom were notorious cheapskates, were continually looking about for ingenious ways to conquer places without actually having to put up the money themselves, or run the risk of unpopularity if they lost. In the case of Ireland, some of these schemes of the "Brish gummit" (as it is termed nowadays in Ulster) are still producing unfortunate long-term consequences.<br> <br> In 1608, King James I gave the city of Derry to the City of London corporation. I guess the deal could be summed up by saying that if the City of London could figure out a way to chase all the inhabitants out of Derry, they would be allowed to keep the loot, minus a percentage for the King of course. If they lost, well too bad. In celebration of this historic agreement, the name of Derry was officially changed to Londonderry. (For further information, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s History of Derry.)<br> <br> The linguistic outcome of all this today is that, if you think that King James’s deal with the City of London was a good idea, you call both the city and county "Londonderry". If you do, you are probably a supporter of the Unionist movement that seeks to keep Ulster a part of the United Kingdom. If you think it was a bad idea, you call both "Derry", and you are probably a supporter of the Irish Nationalist cause. Or you might just be someone who thinks it’s confusing for kings to be going around changing the names of places all the time for no good reason.<br> <br> You can find plenty of discussion about the political side of the question elsewhere, but here let’s look at the musical side. We have an air, collected in county Derry/Londonderry, and it doesn’t have a title. What do we call it?<br> <br> If you were a proper Victorian, there’s no way you were going to call it the Londonderry Air, much less the Derry Air, because of the improper sentiments that these titles might suggest. My parents tell me that in their youth in Australia, it was usually called the Air from County Derry. (This would, I suppose, support Winston Churchill’s theory that Australia was inhabited by "convicts and Irishmen".)<br> <br> My mother also sends the following information, referring to an arrangement of the tune by the Australian composer Percy Grainger:<br> <br> Just another note about Danny Boy, that I grew up in Australia believing to be the Air from County Derry. We were looking through some LP’s last night (back to vinyl yet!) and found a Mercury Wing Classical Favorites stereo LP SRW18060, COUNTRY GARDENS and other favorites by Percy Grainger {played by} Eastman-Rochester Pops, Frederick Fennell, conducting. The cover notes included the following: "Irish Tune from County Derry was harmonised in memory of Irish childhood friends in Australia." Considered by many to be Grainger’s masterpiece of harmonization, the tune was collected many years ago by Miss Jane Ross of New Town, Limavady, Ireland. Grainger has set it for many instrumental combinations. So there’s another variant on the name for it. It doesn’t say who wrote the notes, but the bits in quotes for each of the works on the record are Grainger’s original comments.<br> <br> The references to Londonderry Air that I’ve seen don’t go back any earlier than the late 1930s. For example, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) in February 1940. Bing Crosby’s version was recorded in July 1941 (reference). (So many different things I could check up on!) Londonderry was an important American naval base during WWII, but the US hadn’t come into the war in 1940.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. If we play the intervals in the chord one after another, we produce an arpeggio. But since all intervals, chords, and arpeggios are generated by scales, it follows that scales are the basis of all music from these scales we will find our JAZZ LINES, which is what this book is about. The following is a list of most of the jazz scales the student will encounter as he becomes involved in the study of improvising. When we improvise, we use as our weapons the scale, harmony and melody. The two dimensions in music are the harmony (vertical) and melody (horizontal). It is highly recommended that every student of improvising, know his scales in all positions and a variety of chords that the scales generate. All scales should be played in at least four positions especially the 1st position forces one to learn the theory. All other position pattern scales must be transposed throughout the guitar. The author has written a few pages in the beginning of the book serving as a prerequisite for the jazz lines to follow. It is essential that the student know the scales, key signatures, intervals, and chord constructions that will be used throughout the book. In order to benefit fully from this approach to jazz, the student must understand the full meaning of the words practice and analysis. Most students confuse practice with playing or reading through the exercise. To really improve and absorb the material, every phase must be practiced. This means the fingering must be committed to memory, slowly at first and then as fast as technique allows. The idea must be so ingrained in the mind that it flows from any part of the fingerboard that the performer desires. This is the way great players approach an idea – from any fret, string or position! If there is no harmonic or melodic analysis of the material being studied, then the learning skill becomes superfluous and there is no comprehension and absorption, and without this proper digestion the performer cannot use it as his taste dictates. All of the great players, have had a great technique and this is the first goal of the young student – “great chops.†As the student matures, musicianship will grow but technique is at the grasp of all who seek it. Start today to acquire it!

Such coincidences confirm to me that I am on the right path, at least musically.The reference to Turkey is not coincidental, as Ursula taught in Istanbul for many years.The initial texture of the piece - a kind of toccata with many repeated notes - is a purely musical homage to Ursula: she used this texture in some passages of her compositions. Besides that, this piece contains no direct quotation from Ursula's music.The work Hommage an Ursula is based on a series of 12 notes. The original version (Prime) and the inverted version (Inversed) alternate. From these 24 versions of the series, 24 sections result. I add a final section based on the original series ('Das Ende im Anfange'*); thus, there are 25 sections.To order the 5 motivic elements, I generate a Latin square. The 5 elements do not rotate, but, in each of the 5 main sections, the initial motive is always the same (A), and the order of the other four (BCDE) changes, permutating according to the following Latin square:A BCDEA CEBDA DBECA EDCBA BCDEThis work can then be considered as a derivation of the 'theme and variations' structure, with the peculiarity that there are five sub-themes that are rearranged in each of the variations.This piece lasts about 11 minutes. The premiere, performed by the composer (that is, by myself), took place on November 26, 2023, at the Konzertsaal of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, during the concert 'Gedenkkonzert Ursula Görsch und Harald Kruse', as part of the 73rd Hausmusikwoche, organized by the DTKV (German Association of Sound Artists) in cooperation with the ABK (Circle of Composers in Bremen).This is not an easy piece to listen to. It is absolutely consistent but perhaps monotonous. During the premiere, the yawns of someone in the audience prompted me to briefly interrupt the performance to inform them that the end was near. After the concert, one of the organizers suggested to me that the piece was too 'anstrengend' (demanding, exhausting). This somber, gorgeous piece of music draws tears when presented correctly, and is an extraordinarily important contribution to the brass quintet repertoire. The Jewish “feast†(or “appointed timeâ€) of trumpets, as outlined in Leviticus 23:24-25, prescribes the observance: “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.†According to the Jewish calendar, the feast of trumpets in 2001 coincided exactly with the 9-11 attacks, which could indeed be thought of as “an offering made by fire.†Effectively no servile work was done on that day throughout the attacked nation, and it has indeed become a somber type of “sabbath†to observe every year. It seemed extraordinarily appropriate—perhaps even requisite—that a somber composition with trumpets be composed for the 20th annual observance of the horrific attacks on American soil, as a “Memorial†to those lost that day, and those who since perished in the Global War on Terror. “Where were you when you first heard about the 9-11 attacks?†This common question is posed to those who were of age to comprehend what had happened in 2001. Personally, I had just listened to an emotional rendition of Maurice Ravel’s “Pavane to a Dead Princess.†Elements of that musical memory influenced this present work “Memorial.†Other sources of inspiration—whether intended or subconscious—include Samuel Barber’s heart-wrenching “Adagio for Strings,†Michael Kamen’s “Quintet†for brass, and John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen.†The harmonies are thick and often dissonant, including many suspensions. The players get little rest, symbolic of the constant state of alertness of a shocked nation after being so brutally attacked. Perhaps of greatest symbolic import is the fact that there are exactly 911 notes in this composition. Because of this, it is crucial that the percussion part be performed, and that great care be taken by all performers to refrain from altering the notes or rhythms in any way. A comment on the interpretation of notation: all long notes that are tied to a staccato note on the downbeat are to be held to the downbeat and gently released, not held over.

Henry Mancini wrote this unusual ‘jazz bassoon concerto’ in 1980 for Hollywood session musician Ray Pizzi (the so-called ‘godfather’ of modern jazz bassoon); he can be heard on the original ‘Star Wars’ (1977) soundtrack, also on ‘Predator 2’ (as the voice of the beast). This whirlwind piece takes us through the whole range of the instrument, starting with skittish jumping octaves, a free improvisation (book-ended by ‘shouts’ from the band), a very sultry slow section (featuring Mancini’s trademark chromatic harmony) a magnificent and dramatic final chorus, closing with an extended cadenza to further show off the instrument in this unusual disguise. This arrangement calls for a small beat quartet of keys, Fender bass and drums to accompany the solo bassoon; a suggested solo has been provided for the first section, but the final cadenza has been left blank for complete artistic creation. However, that shouldn't be an issue, even if the student haven't learned these yet because they will mostly be playing from memory. This song should be taught by a teacher or someone else who knows piano as there are some hand movements that need to be explained. Besides that, this song is fairly easy and I am sure your students will love it!

Akëda is based on the prayer El Maleh Rakhamim which is one of two main Jewish liturgies commemorating the deceased (the other one is the Kaddish.) The music is written in a free, single movement, improvisatory-like form. The traditional eastern-European melody of El Maleh is the main text, which pulls liked a thread throughout the movement. The different musical gestures surrounding and illustrating it, function as commentaries (Midrashim.) Simulating the journey of a prayer, from the abyss upward to the highest height, so does the music in this movement cruise from the lowest range all the way up to the top octaves of the instrument. The Hebrew word Akëda means binding or sacrificial offering as the binding of the sacrifice in the story of Abraham and Isaac: ..., and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. (Genesis, 22,9.) The prayer of El Maleh Rakhamim appears in several different versions. The version used for Akëda is the one specifically chanted during Yom Hashoah in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

It is a wonderful example of polyphony in five parts.This work, beautifully arranged for 5-part Trombone Choir (Ensemble) by Ralph Sauer, is about 5 minutes in length (with repeat) and is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.There is a story that this work was heard twice by a young 14-year-old Mozart during a special visit to the Vatican with his father in 1770. He transcribed it perfectly from memory creating the first unauthorized copy (the Church wished to preserve its mystery and forbad copies, threatening excommunication). The very next year it was published in England.

The protests were students led demonstrations in Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China, and were forcibly suppressed after the government declared martial law. In what became known in West as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, troops with automatic rifles and tanks killed at least several hundred demonstrators trying to block the military’s advance towards Tiananmen Square. The number of civilian deaths has been estimated variously from 180 to 10,454.The piece itself reflects the atmosphere of China chronologically from the day before the incident to the time when protests were completely suppressed. The piece was divided into two movements. The first part of the piece serves as an introduction setting up the depressing tone of the whole piece. The first part of the piece reflects the anxiety of the whole society when the martial law was declared. And the second part of the piece refers to Zhao Ziyang’s (赵紫阳) speech at the Tiananmen Square where he tries to communicate with the students and peacefully resolve the protest. The third part and the fourth part of the piece directly describes the protest on June 4th which show a catastrophic and desperate atmosphere.

While searching for liturgical texts associated with Pentecost, I was immediately drawn to the sequence of Veni Sancte Spiritus as an invocation of all the divine qualities that are recognized across the world’s major religions. I was particularly moved by a recording of the Gregorian chant on this text, in which groups of three phrases alternate between low and high voices. I began my own setting of the sequence by adapting many of the Gregorian chant phrases, from memory and with varying degrees of similarity to the original melody, passing them through different modal colors. I followed a similar pattern of formal alternation between high and low voices, while expanding each phrase of the chant into a two-part texture. Elements of both Late Medieval and Renaissance counterpoint are adopted in combination with more Eastern-influenced heterophony, in which two voices follow the same melodic outline with individual variations and ornamentation. As the piece progresses, overlapping duos expand into three-part and finally four-part texture. I aim to evoke a sense of connection with ancient ritual and musical forms, alongside a more modern harmonic gravity that favors certain dissonances in relationship to unisons, fifths and other “perfect†intervals.
