ISBN 9781513459691. 8.75x11.75 inches.<br> <br> Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687 1750) is known to guitarists as the greatest baroque composer for the lute, yet most are only familiar with the earlier portion of Weisss prolific output found in the British Library in London. Inspired by a forty-year friendship with the late Douglas Alton Smith - a major figure in the scholarly study of the history of the lute - guitarist, composer, and head of the guitar program at Temple University in Philadelphia, Allen Krantz explored the Weiss manuscripts found in other European cities, particularly the Dresden editions which contain the fifteen sonatas that Weiss produced from the late 1730s to the end of his life. Transcriptions of three of those fifteen late sonatas are featured in this book in modern standard notation along with the original lute tablature as found in the Sachsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek, Dresden. While the baroque lutes tuning makes some works awkward or impossible on the guitar, the three works presented hereSonatas No. 35 in D minor, No. 42 in A minor and No. 45 in A Major are in their original keys which happen to be guitar-friendly. The authors generous and scholarly Preface provides thorough historical and performance notes for the music in this volume. While just three of Weisss 109 multi-movement lute sonatas are represented here, the importance of this publication cannot be overstated. It contains some of the greatest music of a masterful lutenist Weiss once faced-off with J. S. Bach on keyboards in a counterpoint improvisation contestnow made accessible to the modern classical guitarist.

Al Circo (To the Circus) was written in 1968 by David Stout, dedicated to Emory Remington and was premiered by Trombonist Fred Boyd on a recital at the Eastman School of Music with Carolyn Kuban performing on the Harp. The work is in two movements, both in a lighter nature and humorous. Mute colors are an important part of the mood of the work.<br> <br> David Stout writes about his work:<br> <br> "I wrote this when I was a junior at the Eastman School of Music. Fred Boyd, a bass trombonist, wanted to play it. At the bottom of page 4, on the trombone part, where it says “hand in bell” he had a problem. With a bass trombone he couldn’t reach around far enough to put his hand in deep enough to distort the tone enough. So, he calls me into his practice room one day and tells me to turn around so I can’t see him. He then plays that passage. ‘Is that the sound you want?’ he asks. ‘Yeah that’s it. Perfect!’ I reply. I turn around. He shows me a large plastic fish that he had used to shove in the bell. So on his part, we mark those notes, ‘con sardino.’<br> <br> Dr. Louis Setzer, the author of Solo Literature for Trombone and Harp - An Annotated Bibliography, rediscovered the work and received permission from the composer to edit the composition from the original pencil manuscript. He believes this work is the oldest known original composition for Trombone and Harp<br> <br> This fine work is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 7 minutes in length.

Diversions is a work by Canadian composer Elizabeth Raum for Trombone quartet written in 1998 for the Aurora Trombone Quartet. Elizabeth Raum's writing is influenced by the school of the tone poem in that her music seems often to tell a story.
Diversions consists of several sections, each with its own personality. It opens with a signal call from the first trombone that is answered in turn by each of the others. This leads to the first rather contrapuntal theme combining the Baroque with the Romantic; then a bridge consisting of variations on the signal brings us to the second theme of three muted trombones playing a lively dance-like accompaniment to the open sound of the first trombone. The continuity of the dance is interrupted by occasional asides or "diversions."
Finally, all four instruments, unmuted, join together bringing the piece to a rousing finish. This work of about 6 1/2 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.
