Nine New York City Miniatures (2020) oboe solo began with Movement 7, A Million Numbered Streets. A Million Numbered Streets was originally conceived for a Vox Novus Composers Voice 15 Minutes of Fame call for scores for a one minute oboe solo piece, specifically themed from New York City, New York. In preparation, Nash discovered nearly 1,000 songs dedicated to NYC. Many of those were titled after numbered streets, hence Nash’s title A Million Numbered Streets. Nash’s creation employs a medium-fast highly syncopated song-like melody, alluding to a restless and busy NYC street. In an attempt to make A Million Numbered Streets more marketable, Nash decided to compose 8 additional miniatures around it. The 8 complementary miniatures are all approximately 1 minute in length and alternating fast tempo and slow tempo movements. There are no direct quotes from other songs; however, 3 of the movements are derived from and inspired by New York City related songs. Movement #4, Downtown Music was inspired by the song Downtown by Tony Hatch (made popular by Petula Clark’s vocals). Movement #8, Success is based on the song New York, New York by John Kander (best known for Frank Sinatra singing it). The title Success was inspired by the phrase If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere. Movement #9, Uptown Music is derived from the song Uptown Girl by Billy Joel. In addition, the title Spreading the News for movement 1, as well as that for movement 6, Vagabond Shoes are also phrases from the song New York, New York.

This Quick-Step piece was recorded by Judy Garland in 1943 by Decca Records on her Second Souvenir album.The quickstep is a light-hearted dance of the standard ballroom dances. The movement of the dance is fast and powerfully flowing and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat melodies that quickstep is danced to make it suitable for both formal and informal events. Quickstep was developed in the 1920s in New York City and was first danced by Caribbean and African dancers. Its origins are in combination of slow foxtrot combined with the Charleston, a dance which was one of the precursors to what today is called swing dancing.This dance gradually evolved into a very dynamic one with much movement on the dance floor, with many advanced patterns including hops, runs, quick steps with much momentum, and rotation. The tempo of quickstep dance is rather brisk, as it was developed to ragtime era jazz music, which is fast-paced when compared to other dance music.The quickstep is elegant like the foxtrot and should be smooth and glamorous. The dancers should appear to be very light on their feet. It is very energetic and form-intensive. The quickstep is danced to 4/4 music of 48-52 measures per minute.

In this second of his piano concerto, he blends jazz with sensitivity, rhythmic to lyrical. This concerto is entitled New York Tour because like the city that inspired it, it travels throughout times, musical neighborhoods and cultures. Great compliment in programming with Mozart piano concertos or Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to feature American classical composers or for the Fourth of July summer concert. At these schools many of his early pieces were premiered and performed, with one work being selected for main-stage production in the season. Moving to Los Angeles and then settling in New York, he performed professionally sometimes as a singer, sometimes as a pianist, sometimes as choral conductor. He composed incidental music for the stage. In 2002 he founded a composers collective where they showcased their work. He was one of the first composers to participate in the American Music Center's initial on-line library. The New Jersey Concert Opera and the Gay Men's Chorus of New Jersey also featured his comic operas and art songs. From 2005 he moved to Costa Rica where he organized concerts with visiting guest artists to present his chamber music to the public. Presently he lives in a castle in the central mountains of Costa Rica. An advanced-level jazz arrangement of Autumn in New York for unaccompanied 7-String Electric Violin. Although this was written on a 7-string, it also translates very well on a 6-string; there are only 2 passages that require the low Bb string, and these will sound fine taken up an octave. If you want to try this on a standard violin, well... good luck with the 5-note chords!I realize we extended-range violinists are few & far between, but if you (like me) appreciate the unique ability of this instrument to cover bass substitutions, chord melodies, and other roles that were previously thought exclusive to fretted/keyed instruments, this arrangement is an excellent demonstration of some of the really cool ways that you can bring a melody to life without the need for any effects or accompaniment. It is not for the faint of heart, and will definitely take some practicing, but if you can tackle the harmony this is a chart that is guaranteed to impress any jazz-nerd in the room... or your money back!*A challenging, yet elegant take on one of my favorite jazz ballads, this arrangement is great for showing off your jazz chops as a soloist, but can also work great as background music at one of those weddings or cocktail parties where someone decided it would be a hip idea to have an electric violinist... by themself...without any suggestions on repertoire (don't lie, we've all done at least one of these). Frets are optional, but not necessary ;-) I've been playing this for 6 years without...
