It is based on a sonnet by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) entitled I loved you first: but afterwards your love from her Monna Innominata, a series of 14 sonnets. I loved you first: but afterwards your love is one of Rossetti’s love poems; it simply yet profoundly expresses the existence of love as being made possible only through the complete melding of two people as one entity.The Love Which Makes Us One is best suited for advanced intermediate to professional level choirs. Competitive high school and college choirs should be able to manage it. The piece involves continuous two-against-three rhythms with the choir vs. piano. In addition, there is one extended a capella section that requires the choir to stay on pitch for the piano re-entry. Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. Also known as Unto us a boy is born Puer nobis nascitur, usually translated as Unto Us Is Born a Son, is a medieval Christmas carol found in a number of manuscript sources—the 14th-century German Moosburg Gradual and a 15th-century Trier manuscript. The book became well known in Britain after a rare original copy of Piae Cantiones owned by Peter of Nyland was given as a gift to the British Minister in Stockholm. He subsequently gave it to John Mason Neale in 1852, and it was from this copy that Neale, in collaboration with Thomas Helmore published songs in two collections in 1853 and 1854 respectively, although this carol was not included in either. The carol became popular as a processional hymn following a translation by George Ratcliffe Woodward first published in 1902.[7] Percy Dearmer also translated the hymn for inclusion in The Oxford Book of Carols (1928) as Unto Us a Boy Is Born.Both translations are commonly used. 5 verses, all differnt instrumentation Arranged standard wind quintet.
