Timing: 6-8 MinutesDifficulty- later Intermediate -Advanced, due to the key signature.Suitable For: Any time of the year, but especially around Christmas time, or at a concert that needs a Medieval flair.Gaudete is perhaps the most famous Christmas melody from the Middle Ages, likely dating from the 1500s, and covered by many a modern band, including The King's Singers, Erasure, and Steeleye Span, to name a few.To write this piece, I took motifs from the tune and wrote my own melodies, avoiding a direct transcription of any part of the original melody. Mvt 1, Fanfare, is a bright opening to the suite. After all, the word Gaudete translates to “rejoice”!Mvt 2 plays with the Pavane and Galliard feel. Both are distinct dances, and while this movement is more somber than danceable to the average listener, it utilizes some tricks that the medieval composers used, as well as draws inspiration from medieval compositional techniques for harmonies. Just like medieval dances, if you were to add a repeat sign at the end, you could play this movement ad nauseam and choose to never end it.Mvt 3, Scherzo, plays with your expectation of time but is a fun jaunt after the serious tone of Mvt 2 nonetheless. If you like Gordon Jacob (not a Renaissance composer), you’ll probably like this movement.I’ve included Mvt 0, Just Gaudete, as a bonus. You may begin or end the suite with this movement, play the opening statement to introduce the audience to the tune, or omit it entirely. You may even shuffle the order of movements if you’d like.

The Carman's WhistleThis is the title of song from the Tudor era.The title refers to the occupation of carman (or carter, as we would say today). Carmen were known for their habit of whistling, which was supposed to calm their horses.The most well known version is this one, by William Byrd.Originally written for keyboard, I have arranged it for a brass ensemble (dectet: 10 players) of 3 trumpets (1st doubling on flugel horn), 2 horns in F, 2 trombones, bass trombone, euphonium and tuba. (Cues are provided to cover any missing players)There is also some use of mute to vary the tonal quality.Repeats are provided, as in the original, but it works equally well as a straight play through, without them. Published by Hannah Hawken (A0.752513). The Crystal Spring is one of the many English Folksongs collected by Cecil Sharp. This one comes from Somerset and this arrangement for brass quintet is inspired by Cecil Sharp's piano arrangement. It begins with an unaccompanied 2nd cornet/trumpet solo (this part is also very effective on flugelhorn), the lower ensemble then joins before the 1st cornet/trumpet takes over the melody. The 2nd cornet/trumpet part is popular for GCSE ensemble performances as it is in reasonable range and showcases the player's ensemble skills in both solo and accompanying roles. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.903743). Flexible quintet, parts for oboe, 1st and 2nd trumpet, trombone and timpani supplied. Solo oboe set against the rest in antiphony. A fanfare for a graduation ceremony is unusual in celebrating the whole assembled company: students, their supporting families, distinguished guests and the staff. Wishing to make the piece relevant to York St John's University, I considered its religious foundation and dedication to St John, the apostle. I was delighted to find reference to a Missa Brevis by Robert Hugill, which has never been performed and may never have been published: this includes an Agnus Dei. The composer very generously sent me a copy, and I have inserted a well-disguised quotation from it. Agnus Dei, Lamb of God, is taken from the Gospel of St John, Chapter 1 Verse 29. My central section is a slow peacock processional pavane, as I anticipate the parade of begowned personages. I wanted to avoid unnecessary dissonance and confusion to be created by York Minster's echo. I hoped the echo would enrich the texture rather than muddy it, therefore, I used a scale without semitones--the whole-tone scale, and the lack of rapid passage-work will also help in this acoustic. I love the antiphonal works of, for instance, Giovanni Gabrieli, which were intended for cathedrals, and Decani-Cantoris antiphony appears in, for example, Orlando Gibbons' O Clap Your Hands, which can be found in the 17th century Bing-Gostling part-books at York Minster. The Graduation Fanfare lasts about 1 minute 50 seconds.
