The Chicken or simply Chicken is an instrumental funk tune composed by Pee Wee Ellis that was the B-side to James Brown's 1969 single The Popcorn. The tune gained greater exposure with versions by jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius.Notable versions by Ellis or Pastorius include: Pee Wee Ellis versions, recorded and renamed as Chicken Soup by Dave Liebman in 1977 a studio version by Jaco Pastorius, John Scofield and Kenwood Dennard Pastorius on the 1983 album Invitation recorded live in Japan with a big band that included Bob Mintzer (sax), Randy Brecker (tpt), Othello Molineaux (steel pans), Peter Erskine (drums), Don Alias (perc) Pastorius on the album The Birthday Concert recorded live on his 30th birthday in 1981 but only released posthumously in 1995 Since then it has become a jazz funk standard, with renditions by musicians including: Maceo Parker in the album Mo' Roots released in 1991, with Pee Wee Ellis (tenor sax), Steve Williamson (alto sax), Fred Wesley (trombone), Larry Goldings (keyboards), Rodney Jones (guitar), James Madison, Bill Stewart (drums), Kym Mazelle (vocals) Abraham Laboriel and Shepherd University professors Tommy Igoe & The Buddy Rich Big Band Breakestra Mats/Morgan Band at a faster tempo, with Jonas Knutsson playing saxophone

This arrangement is gig-tested and designed for ease of reading during the heat of a live gig. All parts include chord changes for improvised solos or embellishment of backing parts. The Chicken was written by Alfred (Pee Wee) Ellis, but made famous through Jaco Pastorius’ 1983 recording on the album Invitation. This arrangement features a combined Rhythm Section part with clear chord spellings and rhythmic cues for bass guitar, drum kit, guitar, and piano to follow, specifically with the iconic bass line introduction. Additionally, arrangement features divisi horn parts for the saxophones and trombone, allowing musicians to decide which instruments will cover the melody, and which will play the counter-melody arranged in bars 13-15. She received a degree in commercial music the year before COVID shut everything down, at a time before climate change made blizzards an anomaly here in Central PA. As a result, snow days still existed. I spent one of them doing the first draft of “Deep River,†her favorite.Later, I decided that if singers engage a cellist for a concert, they might like to program more than one piece for them, so I chose two more water-themed spirituals to complete the set. “His Name So Sweet†is a more meditative version of the song than I’ve generally heard. I wanted the piano, cello, and briefly the voice to imitate the fountain in the text. The mood is ecstasy, resulting from the fundamental change that baptism is meant to create. “Deep River†also includes “Michael Row The Boat Ashore†and “The Water Is Wide.†The latter isn’t a spiritual, however, taken together the message is that the river is deep, the water is wide, but with (the Archangel?) Michael’s help, Jordan can be crossed. “Wade in the Water†is one of the most well-known spirituals. I focus on the idea of escaping enslavement: the opening is quiet, furtive, maybe even nervous. The Moses in the text can be understood to be Harriet Tubman, who might urge escapees to wade in the water so pursuing dogs couldn’t follow their scent. In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again.

In my mind, the ending symbolizes that the party has vanished, never to be enslaved again.The first instrumental version of “Deep River†was for trumpet and piano, performed by my sister, Alicia Thompson, and her son, Justin Griffin, during a church service in Atlanta shortly after I arranged it. After hearing a recording, I took borrowed her idea of adding a repeat (which she did to allow enough time for the ushers to take up collection). The clarinet, cello and piano version was premiered by the Isosceles Trio (Doris Hall-Gulati (clarinet), Sara Male (cello), and me (piano)). When Naima Burrs, violinist and conductor of the Petersburg Symphony, asked if I had any pieces for trio, I created a version for violin, piano and cello. The flute/piano/cello version may have been performed, but if so, nobody has mentioned it to me.

As a performer, Mr. Miland has frequently appeared with many of the world’s finest singers, and his playing for me has always embodied many features of vocal technique, including a special kind of portamento, and varying speeds of vibrati. To that end, I fashioned in this piece long, arching melodies that are unabashedly lyrical and romantic in character.The first movement, marked Allegro Moderato Appassionato, is cast in an expansive sonata-allegro form, and its trajectory unfolds with bold, sweeping gestures. Though firmly in D Major, the entire melodic and harmonic texture of the movement is highly chromatic, giving the musical character a sense of heightened inflection and intensity. -David ConteIncludes score and part.

This arrangement, suitable for competent cellists, is designed to produce a full sound despite the small group size. The melody is swapped between parts to give each player a chance to shine. Suitable for any event, from wedding receptions to concerts, and always guaranteed to draw attention. Arrangement duration: ≈ 3:45Notes on the arrangement:Some sections are technically challenging, including double stopping in 3rds, 6ths, and open string octaves, and use of tenor clef. However anyone wanting to simplify this arrangement to make it more accessible to less experienced players would be able to do so; either by splitting up the double stops between a larger group of player, and/or transposing the melody down an octave.Performance notes:This piece should be played with energy and vigour, as intended by Adele. A good pulse and a steady speed will help players to keep together. Any repeated quavers should be played nice and staccato, and quite percussively. This avoids any mushiness sometimes associated with 3 lower instruments playing together in approximately the same range. I originally arranged it for Voice with Quartet accompaniment in F, with my daughter, Alice Rose Wild, who sings on the live recording. You can hear our recording of the whole song on my channel if you type in Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, ‘All I want for Christmas’ into Youtube. More recently I have created this version for String Quartet in the key of G. At the moment I have only the Sibelius computer score, and hope to record it with Capriccio Quartet once the covid pandemic is at an end. Suspend your disbelief!Why choose my Arrangement?The arrangement is in a great key for strings and most of the double stopping includes an open string. In one or two places the double stopping is a bit more tricky, so for younger players it would be better perhaps to miss out one of the notes, or to play them consecutively.The Intro.For the first violinist I include two versions of the intro and recommend that the quartet listen to the original, or to Alice’s recording for speed and performance tips. It is quite difficult to get the computer to do it musically, so the video intro is only intended as a rough guide. One of the enclosed options is intended as a rehearsal version, and has the lyrics to help. I have bowed it to include lots of downbows, and recovery of bows, which will help the other members to follow. The tricky sextuplet and triplet ornament at bar 10 can be omitted altogether. Simply pause on the ‘C’ and then recover the downbow for the next bar.I also include two versions of the violin two and viola parts. One is on two pages as a smaller font, and one on three pages with a larger font.For cellists who are a bit daunted by the solo at letter A , simply play the fourth position semi breve Gs at bar 12 and at bars 13 and 14 too, and revert to the original score at bar 15. ie Six semibreve Gs. Perhaps a harmonic D at bar 15 would be easier than a shift at this point, and then join in unison with the rest of the band.The song moves between a straight crotchet pulse and lots of syncopated lines. This will be difficult to read on paper, but I always recommend listening to the song many times and then doing it by ear, using the notes on the page as a guide. Try not to play them too literally.PrintoutsPages 1 - 10 are for Look Inside Options only.Pages 11 - 28 includes all PartsPage 29 onwards is the optional Score for rehearsals. The vocal version is proving popular, but for a standard quartet Wedding and Events repertoire I hope that people will enjoy this arrangement. The clarinet, cello and piano version was premiered by the Isosceles Trio (Doris Hall-Gulati (clarinet), Sara Male (cello), and me (piano)). When Naima Burrs, violinist and conductor of the Petersburg Symphony, asked if I had any pieces for trio, I created a version for violin, piano and cello. The flute/piano/cello version may have been performed, but if so, nobody has mentioned it to me. Please note that the YouTube version uses a clarinet. The flute version is slightly different, to accommodate the difference in range.P.S. I’d love to hear that version, if you have a recording of it.
