The Coal River Valley is a predominantly agrarian region in the South East of Tasmania, with the town of Richmond as its regional centre.The region is also known for its convict history and colonial era buildings and infrastructure. The region features the historical Richmond Bridge, which is recognised as the oldest bridge in Australia. The bridge spans over the Coal River and was built by convict labour. Construction commenced in 1823, with the bridge formally opened in 1825. The town of Richmond was proclaimed a police district in 1824. It is also important to acknowledge the First Nations people of the region, the Mumirimina people. According to the Richmond 200 website, the land that is now known as Richmond and the Coal River Valley was home to the Oyster Bay nation for millennia. It is noted that the establishment of the police district in Richmond significantly “contributed to the ultimate destruction of the Mumirimina band†(Richmond 200, 2023).Although this composition has been written to commemorate the bicentenary of the Richmond Bridge, it is intended to evoke images of the landscape and the river, as well as acknowledge the past of the region, represent the present and look forwards to the region’s future.Further information can be found here: https://www.richmond200.com

Twenty years ago, an evil terrorist act was committed. The twin Towers in New York were destroyed by planes. The Pentagon was attacked. A fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Feelings of shock, grief, horror, confusion, and anger followed in the wake of this senseless destruction. Fire fighters, police, and members of our Armed Services stepped up with great resolve to act as heroes in response to the attacks. Section A begins with the hum of airplanes followed by the for attacks. Section B expresses the various emotions people felt that day. After this section vents a feeling of national rage, it changes to a feeling of militaristic resolve as our troops go off to fight those responsible for the attacks. Section C borrows an American tune from the Civil War and WW1. Every heart is in the fight for the cause of truth and right, And the freedom of our own beloved land. Many people may know it as Jesus loves the little children. The parts not marked in red are meant to be sung in unison. In measure 45, the flutes and oboes play a decant over the melody. Three measures from the end, the band lands on a deceptive cadence followed by the rest of the measures going to the tonic.

Yesterday is a song by English rock band the Beatles written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon–McCartney) and first released on the album Help! in the United Kingdom in August 1965. McCartney composed the entire melody in a dream one night in his room, and upon waking, he hurried to a piano and played the tune to avoid forgetting it. McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagiarised someone else's work. As he put it, For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually it became like handing something in to the police. I thought if no one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it. I have arranged the melody here as a solo trombone feature which has been successfully performed in concert many times.

In this sample, you hear a baritone saxophone in place of the singer, and an electric guitar for the instrumental sections. The lyrics express frustration with white bigotry toward people with dark skin, and how that brand of racism surfaces in acts of police brutality. The lyrics pose both practical and ideal solutions. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755012). This work was commissioned by the Euphouria Quartet. The composition reflects the composer's feelings about the tragic events of that fateful day. The first movement, Fanfares To Fallen Heroes, is a tribute to the brave firemen, policemen and rescue workers who tirelessly and fearlessly risked and sacrificed their lives in order to save the lives of others. The movement is permeated with fanfare motives that reflect both the bravery displayed and the danger that these people faced. The second movement, Elegy To The Innocent, is a tribute to all the innocent victims and their loved ones who have suffered at the hands of the terrorists. The outer sections have a dirge-like rhythm underpinning a sorrowful melody. The middle section contrasts the dirge by giving a sense of comfort to all that have suffered. The third movement, Justice, represents the struggle and resolve of the United States of America and its allies to eliminate terrorism. Battle motives alternate with a heroic theme throughout the movement. The last movement, Prayer For Peace, represents a hope that all the people of the world can achieve the tolerance and understanding we need to live in harmony and in a civilized manner. The chaconne form is used to represent the uniting of voices as the prayer grows in intensity from beginning to end. A recording by the Euphouria Quartet is available on an Emeritus Recordings CD entitled Echoes – Music for Tuba and Euphonium Ensembles by Sy Brandon and Mark Scott.
