Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533554). I. (Flowing)II. (Fast, nimble)III. (Funereal) (in memoriam Donald Martino)IV. (Dancing)V. (Distant, echoing) (for Richard and Dee Wilson)VI. (Moderate, singing, with humor) (for Michael Finnissy)VII. (Slow, very lyrical)VIII. (March)IX. (Envoi: Very slow, from afar)Nine Preludes (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist Marilyn Nonken; it was commissioned byRichard Mason.Although the work is composed as a set of discrete movements, the preludes are very much interconnected, as motivicand developmental ideas run throughout the entire set. The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minorand major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work. The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’sliterature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work. The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine. The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The musicrefers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to theend. The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (bothquiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano. The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening ismarked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,†and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures. The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux. The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to anintense climax before dying away. The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows. The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.†Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of thepreludes should not be changed. The movements should be listed in the program in the format shown at the top of this page.Recorded by Donna Amato on Carson Cooman: Piano works ALTARUS AIR-CD-9015

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.987700 Composed by E.F.J. Fagan. Baroque,Contemporary. Score. 3 pages. Erin Fagan #21205. Published by Erin Fagan (A0.987700). This is my fourth Prelude from my set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. Where most of my preludes are original works this Prelude bears a resemblance to J.S. Bach's own C minor Prelude. It is not meant as a copy in any way but was only inspired by the work at a time when I was only just discovering Classical music. This is a little more difficult than the earlier Preludes so would be suited for a more intermediate pianist and is roughly 1 minute in performance.

Guitar,Instrumental Duet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1265359 By Various. By Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Baroque. 21 pages. Derek Hasted #858199. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.1265359). Bach Prelude from BWV998 for 2 GUITARSFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This wonderfully lyrical Bach Prelude is one of the most famous preludes to fit onto guitar.I hope you’ll find it’s also one of the best to fit onto two guitars! The original was in the key of Eb major and the facsimile score I used as the basis for my arrangement was for keyboard. I’ve simply taken all the original music and split it across two guitars in the key of D, to give a wonderful stereo effect and to make the phrases stand out. The original had very specific rests in the bass lines which are pretty much automatic on a harpsichord with limited sustain, and quite easy to do on a modern piano. For a guitar, the mix of open and stopped strings can make consistent note lengths quite hard to achieve, and I have included a second arrangement in which the bass notes are notated as ringing on (as indeed most solo guitarists do, starting with the first note of the piece!). The result is a score which is much easier on the eye, and the “decay†of the guitar's bass notes mean that it doesn’t sound at all untidy - indeed it sounds more mellow.I hope you enjoy playing this piece! This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Derek's website at  www.derek-hasted.co.uk/smp lists all his arrangements by title and by number of instruments, with links to soundclips and sample score.

Baroque,Chamber,Classical. 38 pages. Daniel Kaplan #993299. Published by Daniel Kaplan (A0.1410908). Arrangement by Daniel Kaplan for woodwind quintet of Mozart's Prelude and Fugue No. 6 from his Six Preludes and Fugues for String Trio, K.404a. This is an original Mozart prelude plus his arrangement of the dramatic and forceful Fugue VIII from Wilhelm Friedemann Bach's Huit Fugues Sans Pédale, F.31 (Wilhelm Friedemann was J.S. Bach's eldest son). Mozart wrote this to play at the Sunday musicales of Baron van Swieten in Vienna, who insisted that all participants play music of Bach or Handel. Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has also arranged several other great works for this ensemble. The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.Note that all six preludes and all six fugues from this work are also available as a single purchase on this website. This sixth Prelude and Fugue is being made available here for those who would rather buy one prelude and fugue at a time.

Arranged by Rob Bushnell. 20th Century,Blues,Classical,Jazz. Brass Band. 137 pages. RBMusic #756642. Published by RBMusic (A0.1156327). First performed by the composer at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in 1926, the Piano Preludes (or Three Preludes) are a collection of short pieces by George Gershwin, show casing early-20th-century American classical music, as influenced by jazz. Gershwin originally planned to compose 24 preludes, wrote 7, performed only 6 publically and was further reduced to 3 when first published. The work was dedicated to friend and musical advisor Bill Daly. The first prelude begins with a five-note blues motif. It features syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baião and minor-seventh chords throughout. The second prelude, which Gershwin said was a sort of blues lullaby consists of two sections: the first a lazy melody upon a steady beat of crotchets; the second the bass takes the melody, continuing with the steady beats. The third prelude was called Spanish by Gershwin, and features a question-and-answer type melody, starting in a minor tonality and ending in major one. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. A recording of the original composition can be found here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soEUH4H7gog.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.987699 Composed by E.F.J. Fagan. Contemporary. Score. 3 pages. Erin Fagan #21203. Published by Erin Fagan (A0.987699). This is my third Prelude from my first set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. The Prelude is designed as a little showmanship piece as it should only be played with the right hand. Unlike most of my Preludes which are entirely original works, this one has an echo of J.S. Bach running through it. This Prelude is not too challenging for young pianists and only requires a sense of rhythm and strength in the right hand. This piece would be suitable for any beginner pianist with some skill and is roughly 1 1/2 minutes in performance.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.910933 Composed by Frederik Chopin. Arranged by Reimund Merkens. Romantic Period. Score. 5 pages. Reimund Merkens #5983693. Published by Reimund Merkens (A0.910933). The famous prelude op. 28 No 15 of Frederik Chopin is one of the 24 preludes which Chopin wrote during his stay at a monastery in Valldemossa, Mallorca in 1838. It is also well known as the 'Raindrop Prelude' because of its steady rythm sounding like raindrops. The original prelude is written in D-Flat Major and therefore somewhat difficult to read for intermediate beginners. I arranged the whole prelude in C-Major and did some changes to make it easier to read and play.
