Published by Personal Sun Music (A0.1025958). TWO EPISODES FROM DARK FOREST was originally conceived as a violin concerto. As I was writing the concerto, I was suddenly struck with the idea that I could distribute the virtuosic passages across four instruments instead of giving them all to just the violin, which would make for a great string quartet. There would be challenging passages, intensity and action in all of the parts, serious interactivity, and an enhanced narrative flow. The two episodes portrayed here were originally the third and fourth movements of the concerto. What resulted is something of a group showcase, a feature for the whole quartet, with a lot of fiery passages being passed around in quick succession. CHASE THROUGH THE FOREST is a headlong dash, quick and fun, with a sneaky fast rock feel, plenty of thrills, and a little bit of silent movie melodrama thrown in. In the middle of the movement an aggressive virtuosic duel breaks out, utilizing a lot of double-stops, pitting the two violins against one another, with some nasty interjections from the viola and cello. Following the abrupt and unexpected end of the chase scene, THE JOURNEY HOME arrives as wistful, lyrical and nostalgic, pure sentiment. It's an orchestrated song, with expressive, expansive and eventually intimate melodies.

'The City of Manaus' incorporates various musical elements such as multimetre time signatures and vast tambral exploration to represent a chase through the Amazon Jungle. The driving pulse, short note lengths and quick tempo reflect an action-packed chase. This climaxes before a reduction in texture - exploring of the tone colours of the woodwinds, and brass, representative of the birds and pristine environment of the natural world. The tension then grows as the texture thickens before the chase resumes, racing once again through the jungle. The 'City of Manaus' is located deep within the Amazon in Northern Brazil. The actual town was founded in 1693 but the history of colonisation of the area begun in 1499 after the Spanish discovered the mouth of the Amazon River. Being the largest city in the Amazon, Manaus is the centre of life in the region, and the namesake of this piece arises from the way this city seems to be the beacon of humanity in a totally natural landscape. Written for Concert Band, this piece is one which takes the listener on a journey to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to find the 'City of Manaus'. It is suitable for Highschool aged students and professional groups alike and can be performed with flexible instrumentation due to doubling in numerous parts. Grade 2.5-3.

This is an easy solo piano arrangement to a piece written by Nicholas Steinbach titled, The Farewell Waltz. - Note From The Composer - While writing The Farewell Waltz, I imagined it being played at a dinner party back in the early 1910's before a family member left on a trip overseas. I tried to capture the sense of anxious and nervous excitement someone would have felt as he/she leaves family to chase dreams abroad. The key I chose to write in is B flat which has a warm color and a pensive tone. Throughout the piece, I relied on the sharp 4 scale degree (Lydian) to build a sense of mild tension as it is heard over the tonic before a release and quick resolution. Enjoy! Imagine a place where cultures are blended and people of all races can laugh, play, sing, dance, and even pray together.  Colores is a musical tale in which children show us how to create such a place.A child walks on to a deserted playground, looking for others.  Another child joins.  They introduce themselves and begin to talk to each other.  A third joins the conversation, then another, and another, until there is a large group of children, creating a colorful, contrapuntal cacophony of vocal chatter.  After the introductions and lively conversations, they pause to decide what to do next.  As would be expected, they decide to just play.  They run races, play chase and tag, catch and kickball, and laugh and giggle until their energy is gone.  Settling down, and wondering what to do next, one child begins singing a tune that is familiar.  …but not to all of them.  So, it’s time to teach the song to everyone.The tune is shared, bit by bit, and one by one every child learns it and joins in.  Before it’s over, their full-voiced singing creates a choral tapestry in which every child adds his or her own color to the musical palette.After a brief conversation, they add their renewed energy to the song they just learned, pick up the pace, and dance.  They twist and spin, jump and swing, making up their moves as they go along.  But, as before, their energy wanes.  This time, as they settle down, one child feels so comfortable with these new friends, he chooses to share his faith in the form of a chant — a prayer.Some join his prayer, as others add a familiar religious tune.  They pray and sing, and their separate experiences combine to produce a stirring, blended chorale.  As they finish, the day ends and they quickly reminisce about the blended experiences that are now behind them.  Before they go their separate ways, they share a moment of gratitude for the place where they can be free to be who they are, together.On a musical note, Colores combines multiple scale structures and varying types of vertical harmonies to give the piece its color palette.  Each of the five voices is set in a different mode, with different tonal centers and sets of accidentals.  The harmony combines both traditional tertian chords with secondal, quartal, and quintal structures.The colors within the music are intended to represent the racial diversity of the borderland from which the composer drew his inspiration.  It is hoped that we can learn from the example of children who talk, laugh, play, sing, dance, and pray together.  …who are grateful for the time and experiences they share.

With classic ragtime syncopation in the primo part against a 'stride' style in the secondo, this duet is sure to be a popular addition to any recital programme.For the introduction, the primo (perhaps the mouse?) starts things off with a bright opening statement that is answered by the secondo player (the cat?), and then the chase begins!During the opening theme, the primo has an opportunity to tease the cat with a cheeky staccato 'interjection'. Just before this high note is an acciaccatura grace note, which should be played as quickly as possible beforehand.The middle section then modulates to G minor for a variation on the theme, after which a rallentando culminates to a brief pause in the game. There is a break (a caesura) after the pause, so try to leave a good couple of seconds of suspense before launching back into the original theme a tempo.Keep and eye out for staccato and tenuto notes, which will help to communicate the playful feel of the piece.The duet ends with a call-and-response between the primo and secondo, then a crescendo to the ending hits - with a cheeky acciaccatura grace note from the mouse, of course :).

It is also known by the title: Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon, which creates the image of a colourful (or silver) night sky, in which the clouds and moon chase each other. The moon is an important symbol for Chinese people, who have a custom of worshipping it, dating back 3,000 years. Every year, the mid-autumn festival is held in China, on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, which usually falls in September. During this festival, Chinese people celebrate with their families and admire the full moon whilst eating ‘moon cakes’. Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon is commonly performed during this festival and is also used by Chinese cake shops to advertise moon cakes, which increases its association with the mid-autumn festival and popularity amongst Chinese people. As well as being used to sell cakes, this piece is a staple of Chinese instrumental repertoire and has been arranged for a number of different instruments and ensembles, including solo piano, solo guzheng, guitar duo, harp duo, and wine glasses.This guitar arrangement is quite challenging; it includes a lot of intricate lines and arpeggios. Play the semiquaver sextuplets in the intro by dragging the thumb across the bottom three strings and quickly plucking each of the top three strings individually with the first three fingers. Most of this piece is played with standard classical fingerpicking technique, apart from the tapped arpeggios in bars 36 and 37.

It can be played on a lap harp model as small as 26 strings, like the Harpsicle Fullsicle that I am playing in the video, or on a larger floor harp. Your model must have levers, though, as the melody changes keys repeatedly and so relies on several quick lever changes.The lowest note is the E below middle C and the highest is the G two octaves above middle C. As such, it should work on many common small or lap harp models, including Harpsicle harps, some Roosebeck Pakistani harps (depending on the range), Dusty Strings Ravenna 26, Marini Made lap harps, Heartland Harps Air Serenity, and many others. As noted above, it can also work on a larger floor harp with levers.The piece is light, quick, and repetative. By far the hardest element in my opinion is the succession of levers changes in the melody, though these come easier with practice. But less experienced harpists may also want to take into account that there are a few harmonics, played on both hands, in the middle section, and that the song will sound odd if these are omitted.Please note that the preview cuts off after the first half page of score.
