For me, Saxophone Quartet music is also the closest to the human choir. While writing my saxophone quartet I was intrigued to explore the ensemble's technical, timbrel, rhythmical and lyrical aspects. The four saxophones can create a homogeneous texture, but can also express their own individuality and uniqueness. Therefore, the quartet consists of five movements, and four recitatives, one for each saxophone. The recitatives' purpose is double: to feature one saxophone a time on one hand, and lead to the next movement on the other. Saxophone Quartet was commissioned by the Fromm Music Foundation and received its first performance by the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet. Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q21191 Composed by Georges Bizet. This edition: study score. Ernst Eulenburg - Orchester - Partitur. Eulenburg Miniature Scores. Downloadable, study score. Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital #Q21191. Published by Ernst Eulenburg & Co. GmbH - Digital (S9.Q21191). The première of Daudet's play, L'Arlésienne, with incidental music by Bizet, given at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on 30 September 1872, was a devastating event for both playwright and composer and the production was removed from the repertory after 19 performances. The critic Johannès Weber, however, was alert to the quality of Bizet's score and suggested that the composer should excerpt and rescore several pieces for the Concerts populaires where 'the lovely music would be better appreciated than at the Vaudeville'. Bizet must have moved rather quickly to follow Weber's suggestion, for the première of the first Arlésienne suite took place only six weeks later at the Concerts populaires on 10 November 1872 and the work in its new abridged form was soon taken up by many other orchestras. Bizet, however, did not turn to preparing a second suite from L'Arlésienne. Some four years after Bizet's death, the success of the first suite may have prompted his original publisher to commission the arrangement of more excerpts from the Arlésienne MS from Bizet's good friend Ernest Guiraud who had earlier written recitatives and put together a ballet for Carmen. In 1872 Bizet wrote the incidental music to Daudet’s famous tragedy ‘L’Arlésienne’. He had to tailor his composition to an orchestra of only 26 players, but these limited forces turned out to pose a stimulating challenge rather than an obstacle. Shortly after the premiere, he arranged four of the movements and formed them into the Suite No. 1 for large orchestra. The Suite No. 2 was arranged by Ernest Guiraud four years after Bizet’s death.

Monteverdi Madrigals Book 6 - 08. SESTINA

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767277 Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 79 pages. Lyons Music Services #3218695. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767277). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The songs starting from no 8 form a set of 6 to which Monteverdi gave a separate title Sestina Within this set of songs Monteverdi creates a little dramatic episode which foreshadows many of the developments that we find in his early operas: Monody/recitative, dialogue between chorus and soloist, a tendency to give the high parts strong melodic lines and a clear division of the roles of the singers. For the time being, until someone asks, I am not going to release the separate songs from Sestina individually as some of them are a little short. A sestina is a complicated verse form of six stanzas each of six lines with rules about repeating the last line of the first stanza. The poetic form is of little use to us as instrumentalists, but the dramatic mourning, cries of anguish and the feelings of loss embodied in the music will come through regardless of the lack of words. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

Six Bagatelles for Beethoven 250

Clarinet Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.913621 Composed by James Marshall. Classical. Individual part. 64 pages. James Marshall Music #6096487. Published by James Marshall Music (A0.913621). Six Bagatelles for Clarinet and Piano were composed in March, 2020 for Beethoven 250. They are drawn from Beethoven piano music. The sources are piano sonatas, bagatelles, and a landler. With my ever faithful friend and collaborator, London Clarinetist Alison Eales in mind, I sought to add to the Clarinet repertoire. Having written five pieces over the past two years in English manner for Clarinet (English Sonatina, English Autumn, London Concerto, Enchanted London, Postcards from England), a tip of the hat to the Austrian Titan seemed appropriate. Beethoven, unlike Mozart before him and Brahms after him, wrote no solo music for Clarinet. The Trio and scoring in Symphonies are his unique contributions to the repertoire. Beethoven was a contemporary of Weber who wrote extensively for solo Clarinet. With most of the passages being arrangements, my original homage passages frame the settings and are juxtaposed with them. The tone of the music is one of homage and recollection with no intent to imitate or parody the great master. Bagatelles are by nature lighter fare of shorter duration. Hence no long, authentic passages with inherent mood swings and elaborations. By adapting the music to the bagatelle form, it reflects the less ponderous side of the composer. Although Beethoven’s music is capable of great depth and despair, the more transcendent, pastoral, and exuberant moods prevail in these pieces. The final two movements, Recitative and Rondo, draw on the Waldstein Sonata and Emperor Piano Concerto, and Sonata Op 2 No3 as well. The Rondo theme is in Eb, my own, is reminiscent of the Emperor Concerto in it intense yet lilting motif. Perhaps the listener will hear hints of Weber, a clarinet favorite of mine, as well in this final movement. Two movements are scored for Clarinet in A, and four movements for Clarinet in Bb.

Euphonium,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549854 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3555095. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549854). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. Piano,Viola - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549837 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Concert,Easter,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3554477. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549837). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies.
