Published by Jason Allan Taurins (A0.934482). Moondances is a set of 6 bagatelles for trumpet and piano. Aimed at the advancing high school or college trumpet player, the six movements can be played in their entirety or in subsets. At 8:30 in length, it would be perfect for a recital!The musical material for much of the piece is based on pieces I wrote for my undergraduate composition courses at Western Michigan University, but reworked and expanded. The fifth and sixth movements are entirely brand new music I composed to round out the suite. Underpinning all movements is a dark and sad feeling, but with rhythmic energy.Movement I, titled Moondrunk, is a reference to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. It’s an absurd, dissonant, and drunk-feeling dance. Movement II, A Stroll in the Moonlight, shows off the lyrical, expressive, and reflective nature of the trumpet with cup mute. The title is a reference to Hogwarts teacher Professor Lupin, who, within the Harry Potter universe, is a werewolf. The music does not reflect this. In Movement III, Death Dances in the Dark, I experimented with using a highly-chromatic melody which is incorrectly harmonized by D minor chords. The piano and trumpet combine at shocking points in octaves and rhythmic unison to create an unsettling effect. Movement IV, titled Melancholy Memories, is based on a movement of a song cycle I wrote in college. It is at points lovely and unsettling, with a sense of nostalgia.Movement V, titled Dimensions (Pablo’s Dream), is a tribute to my love of the paintings of Pablo Picasso. His cubist works attempted to show multiple perspectives of objects simultaneously. The whole movement is a large palindrome, with smaller palindromes placed in it. To accomplish this musically, I used a twelve-tone row, parallelism in the piano part, and various palindromes in the form. The row is intervallically the same forward and backward. I composed the rhythmic material in the first section stream-of-conscious style, and filled in the pitches. The piano accompaniment is in parallel major chords on each note of the row. The melody at letter H uses the row transposed up a tritone, and parallel minor chords in the accompaniment.The final movement, Chase, shows off the virtuosity of the trumpeter. A common theme of dreams is the chase. These are often quite terrifying, at least in my experience. The back-and-forth nature of chases is explored rhythmically in the opening bars. Phrases of different length and dissonant harmonies are unsettling. A bold cry of terror is heard throughout the movement, harmonized by a chord with a perfect fifth and an augmented fifth. Descending and ascending scales wake up the terrified dreamer, and the music never fully resolves.

Published by Patrick Prejean (A0.1317853). These dances where written at the request of the executive director of CityMusic Cleveland. They are based and inspired by North and Sub-Saharan African Dances in addition to a reimagining of fairy tales. There are 8 movements making this the biggest project I've ever composed. This quintet may also be performed as a String Orchestra ensemble. I - There is a story about a man named Alexander Dynis (Deniz) who is believed to have ended up in Ruthenia (modern day Ukraine) as a PoW when the Ottomans invaded the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Not much is known about his early life but we do know is that eventually afterwards he was granted the position of Starosta (town mayor/landlord) of Kozieglowy (Poland) by the Bishop of Krakow. He is the only Black starosta that we know of to this day. His story is interesting and is the basis of this movement and was inspired by the soundtrack of a game called Hellish Quart. II - This movement is a dance of ritual which emphasizes the different pitch intonations of the human voices hence the dissonant harmonies. Imagine walking through the savannah and hearing these voices but you are unsure of their intentions. This dance is heavy and percussive. III - This movement is of a young woman who is kidnapped by the Vikings and dreams of escaping captivity. IV - There are 3 distinct motives for this movement which combine to create a battle - like scene, those being the 6 quarter note triplets, the rhythmic motive, and the driving 16th notes.  V - I wanted to create the sounding of the natural horns of the Ancient and Classical Eras and to combine them with a retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood. Her journey begins upon hearing these horns and prompted to ride out to begin her quest.VI/VII/VIII - These movements where edited from my Death Waltzes for the Living. There are hidden titles for number 6 and 7: Loss of Mind and Hospital. These waltzes are a reimagining of Cinderella's life but instead of her story playing out as we know it, she suffers a psychotic break and is transported into our world and rushed to the hospital. The final movement concludes the piece with a Dance of Death. I have had many close encounters with permanent oblivion and the result of this is what I call Hitchcock Horror harmonic language. These encounters supplimented with the dreams of the unconscious realm create an uneasy dance that ends almost as abruptly as they begin.

GigueDance Suite for Two Clarinets was composed in the fall of 2019 and is a Baroque-styled suite in four movements, a prelude, minuet, sarabande, and gigue. As a clarinetist, the advancement of original clarinet compositions is something I find important.Each movement composed was modeled after that of the Bach Cello Suite No. 1. The form of each movement is pretty standard as it would be during the Baroque era. The rhythm is kept fairly simple as rhythmic progression or showcase was not the point. The point of the duet is in the melodic and harmonic development through using modern tonalities and techniques. Another technique used in the suite was featuring both players, creating an illusion that only one person is playing when both are playing.

The five movements included are Wade in the Water, Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, Deep River, My Lord Delivered Daniel, and Bamboula. This instrumental setting preserves the energy and warmth of the original. Expose your students to this important style of American Music. Each movement contains a brief description as well as illustration. The violin parts include Advanced Violin, Violin I, Violin II, Violin Book 1, and Twinkle Violin. Since note reading and ensemble playing pose additional challenges, I have made the Twinkle Violin part quite basic, with an emphasis on open strings and basic rhythmic patterns. The Violin Book 1 part is more challenging, designed for players who have finished or about to finish Suzuki Violin School, Book 1. The Advanced Violin part occasionally extends to fifth position, while the Violin I part remains mainly in first Position, with only and occasional use of third position. Violin II remains in first position. The Advanced Violin part is optional. It may be omitted, replace the Violin I part, or both Advanced Violin and Violin I parts may be used, depending on the needs and level of your group. 6 of each part have been included. The entire suite totals 12 ½ minutes.

In Sonata Hymnica No. 7, which calls for a soprano soloist, liturgical dancers, and two pianos (4 hands), three 19th-century hymns (words and music) serve as core material from which the music is developed. Movement I, “Climbing Higher,†is based on the African American spiritual “We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.†The sustained chords, open harmony, and hammer-stroke rhythm evoke the ascent of a mountain climber. Movement II, “The Solid Rock,†is based on the hymn “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less†(1834) . The soprano sings brief lines from the hymn, interspersed with long passages for the pianos (only) that explore many tonal and rhythmic qualities of the original hymn tune. The driving harmony, albeit in duple meter, makes this the scherzo movement of this sonata. Movement III, “On Snowy Wings,†is based on “O Come, Angel Band†by the New England Methodist preacher Jefferson Hascall (1807-1887). In addition to the soprano singer, the appearance of liturgical dancers as angels with “snowy wings†brings this old hymn into the 21st century. Performance duration: 16 minutes.

Duration 542. Published by J. Randolph Hall (A0.482453). The title means Violet Dances and is pronounced Dahns meh-nehk-sheh. Danse is French and menekşe is Turkish for violet, as the group this piece is composed for is called Violet (Viola + Clarinet). Approximate time is 8.5 - 9 minutes. I. The first movement is in the Locrian mode. Sections A and B have themes that go TRIP-el-et DOU-ble. Sections D (B theme) and E (A theme) return to the first two themes but now with the rhythm of DOU-ble TRIP-el-et. Section C jostles the rhythmic feel some what. This all creates a palindromic form. II. The second movement is in the synthetic key of Neapolitan Lydian. The clarinet plays the theme in the first 3 measures and then its inversion in the next 3. III. The third movement theme is seen in section G and I but swapping duplet/triplet pattern.The form is ABA. The key is once again Locrian. IV. The fourth movement's theme is in the Lydian mode. It starts off with monophony but then uses the viola's ability to slide in demonstrating Musical angles degrees [0°,45°,90°] and the form is semi-palindromic. J and O, K and N swap the triplet/duplet feel. L and M swap part between the duetists.
