Itik-ItikThis is a 2nd series of transcriptions that I have started in 2018 as a way of popularising Filipino Folk Music to a larger audience, especially in the Classical World. I would not recommend these transcriptions for a beginner pianist but are within the reach of intermediate to advanced level pianist. These folksongs have been arranged with performance considerations in mind to create the illusion of a difficult transcription without a need for great technical facility. The choice of key signature, which may be daunting at first, actually allows for greater scope and complexity in LH accompaniment figures. RH passages are written in such a way as to limit position shifts allowing easier execution. Furthermore, great care has been taken to create smooth ‘voice-leading’ in the LH accompaniment figure, especially in the bass line and the chords. Brother James' Air was composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain (1860-1925), a Scottish-born poet, author, mystic, and healer whose ministry took him to Liverpool and London, where he became known simply as Brother James. The tune is often sung to the metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord's My Shepherd, by the Puritan religious author and English politician Francis Rous (c. 1581-1659), published in his The Psalms of David set forth in English meeter (1643). The angular, highly arpeggiated tune in bar form (AAB) is both stark and lovely, rising and falling before ascending to a high tonic cadence in its final phrase. Its harmonic simplicity — consisting primarily of I, IV, and V chords — lends itself to alternate harmonizations with substitute chords. Following a short introduction, this arrangement presents the tune four times: first, alternating between the two trumpets; second, by trio of horn, trombone, and tuba; third, in minor tonality (reflecting the psalm's verse 4 and the text's paraphrase, Yea, though I walk thro' death’s dark vale); and fourth, with powerful extended harmonies and surprise cadences resolving to a quiet, peaceful conclusion.  ©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). And the Q&A game continues. Another modulation and the tempo suddenly changes to a slower, expressive one with the French horn featured. As before the Q&A continues. Another modulation and an “a tempo where the piece now in full ensemble starts lower and softer and continually adds activity and pitch raising until a vigorous conclusion.

The Turkish March (Marcia alla turca) is a well-known classical march theme by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was written in the Turkish style popular in music of the time.The theme was first used in Beethoven's Six Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 76, of 1808. In 1811, Beethoven wrote an overture and incidental music to a play by August von Kotzebue called The Ruins of Athens (Op. 113), which premiered in Pest in 1812. The Turkish March appears as movement four of the incidental music. Many music lovers associate the theme with The Ruins of Athens, although that was not its original appearance.The march is in Bâ™ major, tempo vivace and 2/4 time. Its dynamic scheme is highly suggestive of a procession passing by, starting out pianissimo, poco a poco rising to a fortissimo climax and then receding back to pianissimo by the coda.
