Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1164066 Composed by Al Stillman and Ernesto Lecuona. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Multicultural,Pop,Standards,World. Score and parts. 37 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #764401. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1164066). Ernesto Lecuona was born 1895 in Cuba.  He began piano lessons at 5 years of age and developed into a virtuoso pianist and internationally celebrated composer.  In 1928 he composed Suite AndalucÃa, a six-movement piano piece portraying the people and places of the Andalusia region of southern Spain.  Two of those pieces eventually achieved tremendous popularity as standalone songs:  #2, “Andalucia†and #6, “Malagueña.† Lecuona had composed both in ¾ time.  Salvador Tutti Camarata reframed “Andalucia†in 4/4, Al Stillman provided English lyrics and the song was given a new title, “The Breeze and I.† Jimmy Dorsey’s big band recorded it in 1940 with the vocal by Bob Eberly.  It was hugely popular, lasting nine weeks on the Billboard magazine chart and peaking at #2.  Fifteen years later, Caterina Valente recorded both “The Breeze and I†and “Malagueña†to great success.    This arrangement opens in A-flat major with Trumpets, Horn and Tuba laying down a Latin beat and the Trombone playing an opening lick.  After the introduction, Trombone and Trumpets take turns with the melody, while Horn and Tuba provide variety and accents.  On the second time through, the key changes to E-flat major and begins with a Trumpets-and-lower-brass fanfare.  The melody repeats, but this time with a different take.  Horn and Trombone take turns with melody and counter melody, then Trumpets take over.  After several cascade effects, the tune reaches its end and Trumpets play an extended version of Trombone’s lick from the introduction.  The group then repeats the final 16 bars of the tune and winds up with an extended ending treatment.  Trombone once again contributes its opening lick, and the arrangement fades away . . . all to a Latin beat.  Enjoy!    Time signature is 2/2 and suggested tempo is 72 BPM, which is maintained all the way through.  There are two instances of a one-bar change to 3/2.  The fanfare at Section C contains a measure and a half of 16th notes.  All notes are well within the normal playing range of the five instruments.    Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Listen to the Mocking Bird

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1148567 Composed by Music by Richard Milburn. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Country,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 27 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #748729. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1148567). Listen to the Mocking Bird was first published in 1855. The melody originated with Richard Milburn, a Philadelphia African-American who has been described variously as a panhandling busker and as a musically inclined barber. A songwriter and publisher by the name of Septimus Winner heard Milburn's tune, arranged it, added words, put it into print and claimed credit for its creation under the pseudonym Alice Hawthorne. Supposedly, Winner sold the rights to the song for five dollars. Listen to the Mocking Bird grew to be one of the most popular songs of the mid-19th century, a real hit. Its sheet music, by one estimate, sold more than 20 million copies. It was sung and performed particularly often during the Civil War, and troops used its melody as a marching tune. It remains somewhat of a standard and has been recorded numerous times, especially as a favorite of bluegrass musicians. In the lyrics, the singer is remembering his loved one. She has passed away but he recalls their good life together. They particularly enjoyed the call of the mocking bird, which even now is singing o'er her grave. This arrangement opens in E-flat major with Trumpet 1 introducing the sweetly sad melody, I'm dreaming now of Hally. After the introduction, the tempo picks up to allegro and whirls along. It does slow down several times, and there are four one-measure deviations from the 4/4 time signature: one 6/4, two 2/4s and one 1/4. At measure 65, the key changes to B-flat major for the finale. Trumpets 1 and 2 each play one A-above-their-staff eighth note as their highest pitch; the rest of the music stays well within the normal playing range of the five instruments. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 23 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Trombone Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.799352 Composed by Drake Mabry. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 13 pages. Drake Mabry #2015075. Published by Drake Mabry (A0.799352). 9.28.85 was written in 1985 and the date refers to the date of completion, September 28, 1985. Excerpts of this piece are included in Benny Sluchin’s book on contemporary trombone excerpts. This work includes my invention of the idea of playing lip multiphonics. Here's the story. During the Spring of 1985, I participated in the l'atelier de recherche instrumental department for acoustic instrument exploration at IRCAM working with Pierre-Yves Artaud (flute), Daniel Kientzy (saxophone) and Benny Sluchin (trombone). Most of the research was based on looking at new ways to produce sound with acoustic instruments and the department was open to performers and composers. A few months after the IRCAM workshops Benny Sluchin and I decided to work on a piece for him. We worked together to explore various contemporary techniques which I might select for the piece. After a while I narrowed down my choices to a movement with air, one with lip multiphonics, and one using the spatial characteristics of the bell, singing, and sending sound out the back by an alternate F tube. Benny is great to work with as he’s a wonderful musician, anything is possible, he’s open to trying out new ideas and he’s a great human being. The perfect combination for a composer. First, about the lip multiphonics in the second movement. During one of our work sessions we looked at singing and playing multiphonics but I wanted something different. So I asked Benny what would happen if he placed his embouchure between two partials of the overtone series. The result was amazing!! A number of partials sounded at the same time and the textural colors were varied and beautiful. The only problem with this was the window for placing the embouchure was very narrow. Slightly too high or slightly too low would result in a terribly out of tune and uncentered partial. Reminded me of what a sick cow might sound like. This difficulty was less pronounced between partials of a fifth but became more difficult when the partials were closer together. Fourths were okay but major and minor third partials were extremely difficult and risky. We decided what the heck and I wrote the second movement knowing the risks. But when the embouchure is well placed it produces such a beautiful sound. Benny mentioned that the idea had a pedagogical side benefit. He said from being able to focus on placing the embouchure in such a limited ‘window’ it made placing the embouchure for normal note much easier. My invention has been used by other composers since including Xenakis in 1986 and an Icelandic composer a couple of years later. The alternate movement come about after Benny had played the piece for a couple of years. He’s able to get these multiphonics but realized that maybe there would not be many other players able to do so. To avoid the problem that this movement might scare players away from the piece we decided that it would be good to have an alternate movement which would use the same ideas but in a less stressful way for the performer. I thought this was a good idea and wrote, what for me, is a more meditative piece based on the same material. I also imagined that it could be played by itself if the player wished. There is a misprint in the score at the end of the first line where there appears a multiphonic based on placing the embouchure between an Eb and an A natural. The A should be an Ab. The first movement explores the subtleties of various vowel and consonant formations in the mouth while playing. Since the trombone is such a perfect amplifier these small details can be heard. For instance the difference between ‘ts’ and ‘tsh’ comes off well. I think of this movement as a vocal conversation or discourse which becomes highly animated at the end. The dynamics play an important role in providing additional colors. The player should really ‘speak’ without speaking for this movement to work. The third movement is my circus piece. I know it is complicated to.

Soprano, tenor, Knabensoprano, flugelhorn, mixed choir and chamber orchestra - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q7038 Teil I: Schwarz vor Augen... · Teil II: ...und es ward Licht!. Composed by Harald Weiss. This edition: study score. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, Study score. Duration 100' 0. Schott Music - Digital #Q7038. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q7038). Latin • German. On letting go(Concerning the selection of the texts) In the selection of the texts, I have allowed myself to be motivated and inspired by the concept of “letting goâ€. This appears to me to be one of the essential aspects of dying, but also of life itself. We humans cling far too strongly to successful achievements, whether they have to do with material or ideal values, or relationships of all kinds. We cannot and do not want to let go, almost as if our life depended on it. As we will have to practise the art of letting go at the latest during our hour of death, perhaps we could already make a start on this while we are still alive. Tagore describes this farewell with very simple but strikingly vivid imagery: “I will return the key of my doorâ€. I have set this text for tenor solo. Here I imagine, and have correspondingly noted in a certain passage of the score, that the protagonist finds himself as though “in an ocean†of voices in which he is however not drowning, but immersing himself in complete relaxation. The phenomenon of letting go is described even more simply and tersely in Psalm 90, verse 12: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdomâ€. This cannot be expressed more plainly.I have begun the requiem with a solo boy’s voice singing the beginning of this psalm on a single note, the note A. This in effect says it all. The work comes full circle at the culmination with a repeat of the psalm which subsequently leads into a resplendent “lux aeternaâ€. The intermediate texts of the Requiem which highlight the phenomenon of letting go in the widest spectrum of colours originate on the one hand from the Latin liturgy of the Messa da Requiem (In Paradisum, Libera me, Requiem aeternam, Mors stupebit) and on the other hand from poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, Hermann Hesse, Rabindranath Tagore and Rainer Maria Rilke. All texts have a distinctive positive element in common and view death as being an organic process within the great system of the universe, for example when Hermann Hesse writes: “Entreiß dich, Seele, nun der Zeit, entreiß dich deinen Sorgen und mache dich zum Flug bereit in den ersehnten Morgen†[“Tear yourself way , o soul, from time, tear yourself away from your sorrows and prepare yourself to fly away into the long-awaited morningâ€] and later: “Und die Seele unbewacht will in freien Flügen schweben, um im Zauberkreis der Nacht tief und tausendfach zu leben†[“And the unfettered soul strives to soar in free flight to live in the magic sphere of the night, deep and thousandfoldâ€]. Or Joseph von Eichendorff whose text evokes a distant song in his lines: “Und meine Seele spannte weit ihre Flügel aus. Flog durch die stillen Lande, als flöge sie nach Haus†[“And my soul spread its wings wide. Flew through the still country as if homeward bound.â€]Here a strong romantically tinged occidental resonance can be detected which is however also accompanied by a universal spirit going far beyond all cultures and religions. In the beginning was the sound Long before any sort of word or meaningful phrase was uttered by vocal chords, sounds, vibrations and tones already existed. This brings us back to the music. Both during my years of study and at subsequent periods, I had been an active participant in the world of contemporary music, both as percussionist and also as conductor and composer. My early scores had a somewhat adventurous appearance, filled with an abundance of small black dots: no rhythm could be too complicated, no register too extreme and no harmony too dissonant. I devoted myself intensely to the handling of different parameters which in serial music coexist in total equality: I also studied aleatory principles and so-called minimal music.I subsequently emigrated and took up residence in Spain from where I embarked on numerous travels over the years to India, Africa and South America. I spent repeated periods during this time as a resident in non-European countries. This meant that the currents of contemporary music swept past me vaguely and at a great distance. What I instead absorbed during this period were other completely new cultures in which I attempted to immerse myself as intensively as possible.I learned foreign languages and came into contact with musicians of all classes and styles who had a different cultural heritage than my own: I was intoxicated with the diversity of artistic potential.Nevertheless, the further I distanced myself from my own Western musical heritage, the more this returned insistently in my consciousness. The scene can be imagined of sitting somewhere in the middle of the Brazilian jungle surrounded by the wailing of Indians and out of the blue being provided with the opportunity to hear Beethoven’s late string quartets: this can be a heart-wrenching experience, akin to an identity crisis. This type of experience can also be described as cathartic. Whatever the circumstances, my “renewed†occupation with the “old†country would not permit me to return to the point at which I as an audacious young student had maltreated the musical parameters of so-called contemporary music. A completely different approach would be necessary: an extremely careful approach, inching my way gradually back into the Western world: an approach which would welcome tradition back into the fold, attempt to unfurl the petals and gently infuse this tradition with a breath of contemporary life.Although I am aware that I will not unleash a revolution or scandal with this approach, I am nevertheless confident as, with the musical vocabulary of this Requiem, I am travelling in an orbit in which no ballast or complex structures will be transported or intimated: on the contrary, I have attempted to form the message of the texts in music with the naivety of a “homecomerâ€. Published by Ingenue Music (A0.1028005). Commissioned by The Association for Music in International Schools AMIS. Premiered in Bangkok, Thailand in January 2011, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos. Program Notes: The image of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes, kept reappearing in my mind as the main focus for this piece. According to myth, the islands of Hawaii owe their existence to Pele who ran away from her jealous sister, a sea goddess, to these tiny islands. Her sister sent tidal waves and Pele answered by sending fiery lava into the ocean, making new land as it cooled. The spirit of Pele lives on in the craters of the volcano, watching over the islands, reminding us that fiery eruptions and emotional upheavals are followed by new life and change. Pele, unpredictable and powerful, makes her entrance with a loud bang of brass and percussion, followed by the entire ensemble joining in. As the trumpets trail off, words from the ancient Hawaiian chant E Pele, E Pele are heard moving between each section in contrasting rhythms, as the tuba and low brass unfold the main theme. This chant is performed in Hawaiian culture accompanied by hula kahiko, an ancient style of hula dancing. The vibraphone plays a tranquil melody reminiscent of a Hawaiian wind chime softly blowing in the wind. The congas and rainstick evokes a tribal element. The piece is meant to juxtapose the multi-faceted natures of Pele. Syncopated rhythms in the winds paired with big brass and percussion represent her passion and violent temper. The playful, quiet, lingering sections led by the flute and vibraphone represent her irresistible and enchanting mystery as she creates new land and the living things that inhabit these magnificent islands. Today, it is considered by many to be the best classic rock song of all time.<br> <br> <br> There’s a good reason why the 2018 biographical film about Freddie Mercuy (played by Rami Malek) is named after this song - arguably his greatest composition.<br> <br> <br> “Bohemian Rhapsody” is famous for its diverse parts: from the a-capella-intro to rock ballad verses, from hard rock guitar solos to operatic sections.<br> <br> “Bohemian Rhapsody” really is the whole package - and all parts of it can sound surprisingly great on piano, if played right!<br> <br> <br> In my experience, many arrangements of the song seem to be lacking something: They are not accurate, don’t sound powerful enough, there are important parts or even whole sections missing.<br> <br> So I took my time to create a piano arrangement of the song which I feel does justice to this wonderful piece.<br> <br> <br> I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I do!<br> <br> <br> <br> Here are the full lyrics to “Bohemian Rhapsody”:<br> <br> <br> “Is this the real life?<br> <br> Is this just fantasy?<br> <br> Caught in a landslide<br> <br> No escape from reality<br> <br> Open your eyes<br> <br> Look up to the skies and see<br> <br> I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy<br> <br> Because I'm easy come, easy go<br> <br> A little high, little low<br> <br> Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me, to me<br> <br> Mama, just killed a man<br> <br> Put a gun against his head<br> <br> Pulled my trigger, now he's dead<br> <br> Mama, life had just begun<br> <br> But now I've gone and thrown it all away<br> <br> Mama, oh oh<br> <br> Didn't mean to make you cry<br> <br> If I'm not back again this time tomorrow<br> <br> Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters<br> <br> Too late, my time has come<br> <br> Sends shivers down my spine<br> <br> Body's aching all the time<br> <br> Goodbye everybody I've got to go<br> <br> Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth<br> <br> Mama, oh oh (anyway the wind blows)<br> <br> I don't want to die<br> <br> Sometimes wish I'd never been born at all<br> <br> I see a little silhouetto of a man<br> <br> Scaramouch, Scaramouch will you do the Fandango<br> <br> Thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me<br> <br> Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo, Gallileo, figaro, magnifico<br> <br> I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves me<br> <br> He's just a poor boy from a poor family<br> <br> Spare him his life from this monstrosity<br> <br> Easy come easy go will you let me go<br> <br> Bismillah, no we will not let you go, let him go<br> <br> Bismillah, we will not let you go, let him go<br> <br> Bismillah, we will not let you go, let me go<br> <br> (Will not let you go) let me go (never, never let you go) let me go (never let me go)<br> <br> Oh oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no<br> <br> Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go<br> <br> Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me for me for me<br> <br> So you think you can stop me and spit in my eye<br> <br> So you think you can love me and leave me to die<br> <br> Oh baby can't do this to me baby<br> <br> Just gotta get out just gotta get right outta here<br> <br> Oh oh oh yeah, oh oh yeah<br> <br> Nothing really matters<br> <br> Anyone can see<br> <br> Nothing really matters<br> <br> Nothing really matters to me<br> <br> Anyway the wind blows”
