Published by David Jex (A0.925770). 2016 Choral Contest EntryArt is a fire! is a bold statement on the importance of Art in our lives and society.Composed for SATB Chorus and Piano it is of moderate difficulty, with a length of 3 1/2 minutes.. The text is from a poem written by our older son, Matthew. He has a gift to express ideas and emotions in words that I do not, and I was very pleased and excited when he gave me permission to set his poem to music. The music is in an overall ternary form, with the fiery outer sections tempered with a more spiritual middle segment. The piano plays an important but supporting accompanying role. The music is somewhat tonally oriented, with an E minor basis for the more passionate outer sections. These sections also require the choir to sing some chromatic melodic and harmonic lines and constructions. The rhythm also varies somewhat, asking the chorus to express these emotional portions of the piece. The flowing middle section has a more consistent tempo and is centered in C major. This key seems to have the qualities of innocence and peace, which offsets the more restless and fiery E minor of the rest of this work. This more meditative center section also has a more triadic basis than the somewhat contrapuntal textures surrounding it. It invites the music performers and listeners to experience the joy of Music and Art, while the closing music and text sing of the passion and energy of the artistic experience.

While Hail To The King will never be A7X's most popular or Critically Acclaimed (...see what I did there) record, it did provide us with some of the catchiest guitar hooks & drum grooves in this band's entire catalog. The opening track, Shepherd of Fire, is an absolute banger of a crossover tune that appeals to rock & metal fans alike. Consequently, like so many Avenged hits, it plays quite well as an instrumental cover and can be adapted to some interesting instrumentations beyond the original 2-guitar, bass, drums format in which it was recorded.Some years ago, I performed this tune with a 4-piece band on my college recital and it was an absolute blast! Whether out of sentimentality or just sheer boredom (I write this as we are right in the thick of the Covid-19 pandemic and gigs are... scarce, to say the least), I decided to resurrect that arrangement and clean up my shorthand charts into some real parts so that you, too, might have the joy of bringing this hard rock anthem to life with your own ensemble.The purchase of this chart includes:- Fully notated parts for drum set, bass, & rhythm guitar- Fully notated Lead part that merges the brass, lead guitar, & vocal parts into one cohesive chart- Lyrics & vocal melodies notated on lead part (if using a vocalist)- Full transcription of Synyster Gates's original guitar solo! (printed on lead part)This arrangement can be performed by as few as 4 instrumentalists. My original performance was with electric violin, guitar, bass & drums, but with the updated Lead chart the violin could easily be replaced by keyboards, a second guitar, or any instrumentalist that can read at concert pitch. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938424). The work was completed on February 2nd 1970 and is the first piece to be retained by the composer after he had destroyed all his earlier compositions. The parts are available as a separate download. The following is taken from the catalogue of the composer's works:- The photocopy of the MS is marked String Quartet No. 1, but is not regarded by the composer as part of his mature string quartet writing. The MS itself was lost in a fire at the home of Col. Robert Tong, formerly Registrar of Queen Mary College, University of London. A typesetting was made in November 2000 as the photocopy had faded so badly. The composer's sketch books suggest that the movements were written in the order 3,2,4,1. 1. Allegro 2. Scherzo (Allegro energico) Trio I - tempo di menuetto Trio II - no tempo indicated - [andante] 3. Andante con moto 4. Allegro ma non troppo Composer's note:- As the above suggests, I originally had no intention of publishing this early piece. The recording by the Lochrian String Quartet of the six numbered quartets, however , together with sleeve notes admitting the existence of this work, prompted me into revising my opinion and allowing its publication, so that anyone wishing to study this first effort may do so. It shows certain traits that I was to develop in the six quartets and others that I was to discard, and therefore is of musicological interest. It also has a few good, albeit imitative, tunes! Duration: Approx. 25 mins. COLIN BAYLISS was born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire in 1948. His life-long love of music led him to compose from an early age and he now has a catalogue of over a hundred works including two operas, four symphonies, six string quartets and many other pieces for most instrumental and chamber groupings, over seventy of them published. He is a member of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters, the North West Composers' Association and the Performing Rights Society. As well as writing music himself, he has also compiled annotated catalogues of the works of Anthony Hedges and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. CDs of his piano music played by David Martin and complete organ music played by Ronald Frost are available on the New Century Classics label.
