Procession of the Nobles (Cortége) was written in 1889 as part of the opera Mlada. The Procession is the only part of the opera that is still performed and is the introduction to Act II, which begins with a town festival. The colorful scene bursts to life with a rousing fanfare by the brass.

Böhmeâ??s Brass Sextet (Trompeten-Sextett) op.30, composed in 1911, undoubtedly ranks among the finest brass music produced by the romantic era. The title refers to the distinctive symmetry of the instrumentation: four instruments from the trumpet family and framed by two representative of the bugle family. The use of the trumpet was remarkable at the time because the characteristic brass ensembles of the period consisted exclusively of bugle-family instruments. It was for such a group of 2 cornets, alto, tenor and baritone horn, for example, that Viktor Ewald wrote his well known quintets.The question of which instrument to use of the exposed and rather high bass part, intended by the composer for the â??high Bb tubaâ? is tricky. A great tubist could play it on an F or Eb tuba, but a more compact ensemble sound is obtainable with a euphonium or small French Bb tuba.

It is as if the listener had been thrown onto the surface of a hostile planet, devoid of any comprehensible life. In the second movement, vivid life forms begin to appear, at first frightening, but soon starting to take gentler forms, which eventually start to take the music closer to the key of G major. The last movement starts with a recitative, a gesture often found in late Beethoven. There is a feeling that we are approaching something important – mysterious gates slowly open, revealing a Cavatina, followed by a set of variations. The progression of these variations eventually leads also to dissonant memories from the beginning of the work, but those dissonances are finally resolved in the last variation, which ultimately finds its peace and begins its ascension toward the skies and to the radiant brightness of G major. Heitor Villa-Lobos was a prolific Brazilian composer, conductor, ‘cellist, and classical guitarist, and was probably the most significantly inventive individual in 20th-century Brazilian art music. He wrote over 2,000 orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. Central to Villa-Lobos’s compositional language is Brazilian folk music – he spent his formative musical years playing popular songs on the streets of Rio de Janeiro – but also using elements of European classical works and influenced by French music, creating his unique sound world. Sexteto Mistico is a unique composition in one movement, consisting of short sections, each bringing unexpected richness, strangeness, virtuosity and polyrhythms. The opening is diaphanous and other-worldly; instruments enter in turn as if introducing themselves, continually weaving their dreamlike harmonies. In the next segment we’re taken into a dark, atmospheric oboe solo; this, to rippling accompanying arpeggios, twists and turns with lyrical eeriness. In the final section the theme, that the repeated motif had been hinting at, clearly emerges, leading us to a bright conclusion. Reimagined for symphonic band from the original sextet of flute, oboe, alto saxophone, guitar, celesta and harp.

Recordare (from Requiem (K. 626) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Franz Xaver Sussmayr - Bassoon Sextet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a Bassoon Sextet, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long, sustained phrases, and also to give them the chance to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (28 pages). The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. Regis Bookshar, a trumpet player, has performed the Requiem in concert with a full orchestra, soloists and a chorus and felt that other musicians should have the opportunity to play the hauntingly beautiful Recordare as well. So, in addition to this arrangement for a Bassoon Sextet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this beautiful composition. There are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may fine something else which may also suit your needs.
