The story begins with the performer in command of his instrument, then the instrument takes over in command of the performer and in the final section, the two find ways to work together. The score is primarily spatial which leaves the performer much leeway and freedom in his or her interpretation. The contemporary techniques are explained at the beginning of the score. The duration is 8 minutes. This is a manuscript score, thus the reduced price. The work was written for Jon Deak, bassist with the New York Philharmonic.

The piece demands much agility from the performer, alternating in fast sections of arco and pizzicato. The work is in a rondo form, with the opening theme recurring between contrasting ideas, all related to the overall tonal centre of G. Most themes are characterised by the use of the seventh degree (in addition to the notes of the triad), which gives a touch of the blues style. There is much use of changing and irregular time signatures, as the piece explores rhythmic interplay and displacement. The work also plays with tonal ambiguity between major, minor and modality, in an almost jazz-like manner that is befitting to the double bass. This work is accessible for the listener and is appropriate for advanced double bassists, including students and professional players. Sub-Bass can even be used as a virtuosic encore.

Jacques Cousteau, Father of the Aqualung, wrote: The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder for ever.This piece, for virtuoso double bass, imagines a scuba-diver encountering large animals, and consists of a suite of short depictions of animals in the form of variations on a melody plus a recurrent new melody representing the diver's smooth movements and bubbles. The variations are: Lobster Jazz Waltz, Sea-anemone Belly-dance, Tuna Tune, Luminous Light Show, Dolphin Fling, Jaws Serial and Blues Whale Pavane.The piece lasts about eight minutes with repeats.TECHNICAL NOTE The C harmonics will be a pip flat--they are only bursting bubbles anyway!Scuba Fins tries to feel the quiet calmness and agelessness of the underwater world, using the ancient and universal major pentatonic scale C,D,E, G,A ,C. The rhythm is mostly steady and simple, but triplets indicate the occasional extra effort. Now and again, he glances down at the infinite depths. Tintinnabulation and soft staccatissimo arpeggios represent the bubbles. Lobster Waltz is a jazz waltz with many staccato notes and leaps representing the many appendages and the tangle of lively giant crustaceans.Sea-anemone Belly-Dance pictures the soft body and tentacles swaying under the waves, using the Arabic scale Shad 'Araban, roughly G,Ab, B,C,D,Eb,F#,G and influenced by a dance to the folk tune known as Bint El-Salabiya.Tuna Tune is a quick moto perpetuo in the cheerful major mode, septuple time, the rapid rise and fall of the phrases and of volume reflecting the powerful shoal's unpredictable, ceaseless movements, approaching and retreating.Dolphin Fling is a stathspey, or highland fling, using the major mode and typical dance rhythms including the Scotch snap to depict the weighty but intelligent dolphins enjoying their leisure time and perhaps dancing with the diver.Jaws Serial reminds us of the fear a shark generates, using the dissonant 12-note serial mode and unpredictable leaps and pauses. The opening slow trill will chill you as it invokes the Jaws film theme by John Williams. You might even hear the diver's heart sink and the snap pizzicato of the teeth snapping. The prime row is the nearest possible to the original theme: Bb, Ab, F, Eb, B, C, E, G, Db, D, Gb.A, but I have followed the contours of the main themes. Blues Whale is a pavane, a slow, stately processional incorporating the typical renaissance drum rhythm. and using a blues scale, G, A, Bb, C, C#, D, F, G, and an implied 12-bar minor blues harmony.

Dance Sequences was composed during the first lockdown of last year. It is in four movements each with its own character.Prelude - ‘Pagan Dance’ is highly rhythmic with angular melodic lines throughout with some release in the middle of all the raw emotion. As a result of this there is no clear tonal center in this movement. Perhaps a reflection on what was going on in the World at that point.Lament – ‘Slow Dance’ is more reflective almost Hymn like in its approach and has a clear tonal center around C minor with lyrical lines being passed from Bass 1 to Bass 2.The Wonky Waltz is more lighthearted in style as the title suggests it doesn’t quite know what to be with changing time signatures, perhaps a hint of the Tango thrown in before we finally feel a ‘Waltz’ pulse in the final few bars.Final Dance is another energetic movement that combines simple and compound time signatures to give a feeling of constant change and rhythmic contrast. The rhythmic pulse is highlighted with the use of Col Legno in two sections giving a more of a percussive effect. Set in the traditional fast - slow - fast format. The first movement is that might be called neo - classical. The second movement is a jazz waltz. The third movement leans toward French Impressionism. As concerto's go, this is not too difficult. However, it will require the soloist to have some mastery over the instrument. Performance time is approximately 13 minutes and 10 seconds.

The Quintet for double basses was written for the bassist, Paul Ellison and premiered on the Isle of Man, England at the International Double bass festival on August 8, 1978. The players were all principal bassists in five major American orchestras. This explains the equality of the sometime difficult parts. Both traditional and contemporary techniques are used and the score incorporates written and spatial notation. There are moments of solos, duos, trios etc. as well as chorales. The duration is 16 minutes. This is a manuscript score, thus the reduced price.

At the suggestion of my colleague, pianist Tricia Dawn Williams, I started work on a piece for double bass and piano for a special concert she had planned in Malta with bassist Gjorgji Cincievski.Upon beginning work on the piece I had a bit of difficulty reconciling the huge sonority and weight of tone the instrument with the piano. The more I pondered this issue, the more it pointed to thinking about the sound of the instruments in a slightly different way from other instruments. The double bass has a spectrum of sound that ranges from so low one can almost feel it more than hear it, to a quite nasal, somewhat sweet ‘head voice’ in the upper range.Because of this, the notion of some earthen, eruptive sound took hold in my imagination and this led also to the conception of many of the features of the work: vibrant low trills and fast syncopated rhythms all offset by a central slow section that is the still moments between two eruptive outer sections.I completed the work in Cincinnati, Ohio between September and December, 2012 and it has since been played in Malta, the USA and Australia by Gjorgji Cincievski and Robert Nairn.

Composed in June & July 2020 & completed on the 19th July 2020. As a former Double Bass player, I thought it was about time a composed a concerto for my former instrument. The Concerto uses a relatively small orchestra (Flute, Oboe, Cor Anglais, 2 Clarinets, Bassoon, 2 Horns, Timpani, Harp & Strings), the string section should not be too large, 8,8,6,6,3, would be a preferable size. The solo Double Bass doesn't have a large amount of carrying power & so the dynamics for the soloist are marked up, as the MIDI playback isn't great for a solo Bass, the soloist's dynamics have been notched up still further in places for MIDI playback purposes, but can be adjusted down in concert performance. The bass clef has largely been used for the solo purely because the tenor clef option sounds an octave too high on the Musescore program. The Concerto is in 3 movements and about 17 minutes in duration.Parts are available upon request.
