This version of One Note Samba is intended for junior players and can be performed on virtually any combination of five or more woodwind and/or brass instruments. It is based on my own experience of working with such groups. In this arrangement most of the standard four-measure phrases of this well-known song have been extended to five or more measures.The parts included are suitable for the instruments usually found in groups of learners:flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bassoonBb trumpet, F/Eb horn, trombone (TC/BC), euphonium (TC/BC), tuba, Bb/Eb bassEb alto sax, Bb tenor saxAn optional part is included for shaker and triangle. Although the piece can be played without percussion, including this part (and/or some other appropriate percussion instruments) does help the players get the feel of the Latin groove. (And the rather soloistic triangle adds a bit of fun!)The high flute/oboe part is also optional.The tempo chosen will depend on the abilities of the players.I’ve split up the somewhat tricky runs at measures 16 and 22 between two players. However, players who can play the complete runs securely should be encouraged to do so.Apart from maybe saving paper, writing two parts on one system does help players to learn to read such charts – something all players should learn to do.Observing the different lengths of normal, tenuto, and staccato notes is another important aspect of learning this piece.

This is a romantic samba. I wrote this tune to express my wife's qualities of warmth and surprise...and how she is a wonderful dancer. I think of the tune as being fairly straight-forward; however, it has some surprises. The AB form is unusual in how the A part is 15 measures and the B part is 22. While the music is mostly in 4/4, there are two places where a measure or two of 3/4 is used to shake things up. Harmonically, there is a mix of standard II-V chord changes, parallel harmony, and symmetrical harmony. The melody has a floating quality. The sustained notes give the rhythm section space for fills. Two Dreams for Trombone and Percussion EnsembleDr. Justin Alexander (Director, VCU Percussion Ensemble) invited me to create a piece for trombone and percussion ensemble that had roles for more- and less-experienced players so that they could mix within the performance. I so enjoyed composing and performing this work. He estimates the overall difficulty grade of Movement I to be a three on a five-point scale and Movement II to be a four, with a grade four for the overall piece; but some players’ parts (within the eight total in the percussion ensemble) are indeed easier.The two Movements are approximately five minutes each.The first Movement Bilita Mpash (An Amazing Dream) calls for (1) shekeré/guiro; (2) 5-octave marimba (shared with...); (3) 5-octave marimba (shared with previous); (4) claves/drum set with mounted cowbell; (5) bell/mounted cowbell/congas; (6) hi-hat/suspended cymbal; (7) bass drum; and (8) four toms/maracas.The Second Movement (Running with the Tigers) calls for (1) xylophone; (2) vibraphone/glockenspiel; (3) 5-octave marimba; (4) drum set; (5) shaker/samba whistle/congas (opt. voice); (6) triangle/bell tree/hanging bells/agogo bells (opt. voice); (7) bass drum (opt. voice); and (8) Timpani (opt. voice). Pending difficulty levels, the conga and drum set parts can optionally be split among additional percussionists. The score notes offer a stage plot and many rehearsal tips.Bilita Mpash (An Amazing Dream)The 3-2 Rumba Clave anchors this movement, launched by the shekeré. Rhythmic vamps of multiple bars form the landscape over which the trombone’s melody emerges, followed by a move to double-time 2-3 Rumba Clave (with montuno) and back. The trombone soloist improvises without chordal accompaniment for a while so could reflect on the preceding harmonies or instead freely improvise with no concern as to chord changes, while a later section requires improv over chord changes. After the recap, a surprise tag of the ending phrase in Cha Cha sets up the rubato finish. Bilita Mpash (BILL-it-uh m-POSH) is a Bantu term for an amazing dream, a dream so good that it is the polar opposite of a nightmare-a dream in a blissful state where all is forgiven and forgotten2. Running with the TigersThe opening, written-out marimba solo is somewhat of a nod to vibist Gary Burton’s influence in bringing mallets towards the expression of modern jazz. A 9/8 samba-groove (5+4) transforms to 4/4. None of the percussionists have to have a jazz background, though the drum set player would be more challenged if not already exposed to Latin drumming. The improvised solo section could be all solo trombone or could be divided among various performers, including trading. The recap of the tune begins over 5/8 samba (3+2, later 2+3). The closing arrhythmic drum-set solo crescendos as the optional surprise of percussionists’ (or additional) voices sing at the end. The title of this movement refers to a recurring dream my dad would have, as well as to the active movements of my grandson when sleeping in his earliest years.-Antonio J. Consequently, the samba and the bossa nova are forever engraved into my heart. So, when Larry Tamburri, Executive Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, proposed that I write a flute concerto for Bart Feller, principal flutist of the NJSO, he (Larry) thought it would be most appropriate if I wrote something inspired by my musical experiences in Brazil. The result is Flauta Carioca, literally meaning, flute in the manner of the people of Rio de Janeiro. The work is in three movements. The first is a chôro, an instrumental ensemble music that features a soloist that is often virtuosic when it is fast, and lyrical when it is slow. The second movement is a bossa nova. It features Bart on the alto flute and the music is very luscious and sexy. The listener can fantasize about Rio and the beach at Ipanema. The last movement begins with a slow introduction, a pastorale. Without a break, a forró enters in the strings, followed immediately by the percussion. Forró is party music, and this last movement is all about dancing. As a matter of fact, Bart wants to party all night ... Published by Pedro Brochado (A0.507479). Silent Night is one of the most popular Christmas carols of all time, and I've intended to create an accessible edition of it in the Bossa Nova style. The piano accompaniment features a simple and common pattern of the genre and the melody's rhythm is re-written to a 2/4 division with some typical Brazilian figures (but not so syncopated as in samba). Here, the bass is simplified to a repeated root noted, which works well. For those who wants some more, I've uploaded other versions with more moved bass, which are a just slightly more difficult. The pdf contains: - Vocal and Piano accompaniment with lyrics and chord symbols - Clean Vocal part - Clean Piano part.

Key: Db major.This is a note-for-note transcription of the October 31, 1963 trio recording of Horace Silver’s tune Que Pasa. It is notated for piano, bass and drums, although the bass is a three-note figure that hardly ever varies. For his improvisations, Horace employed a call-and-response pattern between his two hands, with little overlap. This means that the solo pianist can play the string bass part with her left hand while handling both piano staves with her right. Horace observed, “We never used this trio version but I really like this earlier version. I approached it differently in that I didn’t always resolve it when I was improvising. It’s different and I like it.†See bar 67 for an example of his reluctance to resolve. To create Que Pasa, Horace took the first line of Gershwin's Nice Work If You Can Get It (“Holding hands at midnightâ€) and put a samba bassline underneath. It is written in the theoretical key of Db minor, together with the non-diatonic chords G13 and F13. The tune stayed in his bandbook for the next three years and has become something of a mini-standard over the years.
