During my compositional preparation, I repeatedly found myself returning to this work. I had a number of different formal models in mind, but felt myself gravitating towards the rhapsodic character of toccata form so that my new composition for organ ultimately became a toccata developing from a pedal point on the fundamental note ’D’. As is appropriate to the volume of a large modern organ, my concept focuses on symphonic tonal layers whose suggestive maelstrom originates from the inner strength of repeating elements and their register- like augmentation, culminating in the unleashing of polyrhythmic progressions. Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C, BWV 564 is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous organ works.Toccata: This part starts with an introduction that sounds like improvisation. It has fast, single-note passages like a concerto's cadenza. At measure 32, it changes to a bright, full sound like an orchestra.Adagio: This part is slow and very beautiful, with a sad feeling in a minor key.Fugue: In 6/8 time, this part is lively and bright, like a dance such as a Gigue or Passepied, even though it is not labeled as a dance.In my previous publication, Toccata & Fugue, BWV 565 for Violin and Viola, I showcased the unique beauty of string instruments. Similarly, in this piece, the beautiful melody of the Adagio fits perfectly with the Violin and Viola, as if it were originally composed for them. The dance-like energy of the Fugue is also easier to express with string instruments.When two people perform this piece, it creates an interesting dialogue, almost like a conversation. The introduction of the Toccata reflects this, inspired by my students who would chat enthusiastically before starting their practice. Their conversation in the music lasts for 31 measures without any chords together. The short unison phrase in measure 13 symbolizes their agreement to start playing together. After that, their conversation continues, with triplets and important motifs of this movement appearing, increasing the expectation for the ensemble to begin. From measure 32, the real ensemble playing begins. Although we don't know what Bach imagined when he wrote this introduction, I now hear it as a conversation, even when listening to the original organ version.In the Adagio viola part, the continuo notes are marked in black, and the notes that create harmony are marked in blue. Players who can control the volume balance of double stops should balance it so that the continuo flows naturally. Players who are not skilled in playing double stops, it might be better to omit the blue notes in difficult sections. If omitted, the section might feel empty, but with careful playing before and after, it could still sound natural.

The Symphony for Organ No. 5 in F minor, Op. 42, No. 1, was composed by Charles-Marie Widor in 1879, with numerous revisions published by the composer in later years. The fifth movement, in F major, is often referred to as just Widor's Toccata because it is his most famous piece. It lasts around six minutes. Its fame in part comes from its frequent use as recessional music at festive Christmas and wedding ceremonies. The melody of Widor's Toccata is based upon an arrangement of rapid staccato arpeggios which form phrases, initially in F, moving in fifths through to C major, G major, etc. Each phrase consists of one bar. The melody is complemented by syncopated chords, forming an accented rhythm against the perpetual arpeggio motif. The phrases are contextualized by a descending bass line, often beginning with the 7th tone of each phrase key.Blankenship's arrangement for brass octet takes advantage of the trumpets' ranges by voicing the arpeggiated motif in only these parts and allowing it to be passed back and forth (this also means that it can be customized to be performed by as few as 1 or as many as 4 trumpeters). As a tubist, Blankenship has written a very demanding bass part that is not for the faint of heart; it can be played 8va but does not present the same effect.

Bach, consists in a counterpoint explosion of the harmonies through a melodic construction that sometimes corresponds to one of the themes identifiable in the original piece and sometimes has been entirely reinvented; to facilitate the vocal performance of each of the four voices, Alessio Niccolai adapted a text to the musical sequences: it is made up of a set of ancient Latin proverbs.The execution is not the easiest: a casual pronunciation of Italian is certainly optimal for being able to correctly execute the Latin passages. Furthermore, the organ has its own native difficulty which could be significantly reduced with the performance on the piano (possibly in combination with an instrument that operates in the lower registers of the sound range) because the percussion of the hammers increases the auditory perception of the rhythm.However, the performance is not impossible even for an advanced amateur choir and guarantees an impact on the public.The idea of a transcription for choir of a purely organist work like this, was born in Alessio Niccolai's head from his first listening.

The first section is written in a North German toccata style where the opening measures are treated in a canonic manner and played in a series of thirds and sixths against the main theme stated in the pedal division; this compositional approach is somewhat reminiscent of the organ compositions of Dietrich Buxtehude (Prelude and Fugue in G Minor BUXWV 149). The second section is contrapuntal in nature and depicts a humorous moment; that moment may depict a comedy show or a circus event at a fair. Following that section is the recurrence of the main theme of the first movement. The fourth section is quiet in sound intensity and is the most chromatically oriented than other parts. Following that is a fugue, derived from the main theme of the first movement, and a transitional passage leading back to the recurring main theme. The work concludes triumphantly in the key of G Major. The Scherzo requires attention to articulation, phrasing and timing. This work is suitable for educational and recital uses: it introduces organ students to major works of Buxtehude and Johann S.
