PATAPAN - traditional carol - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.There are TWO ARRANGEMENTS in this one edition.Derek Hasted writes This Burgundian Carol, first published in 1720, usually has four verses in the French version and three in the English. This arrangement has three verses, all in slightly different styles.The melody and the onomatopoeia in the lyrics are together meant to symbolise the fife (“Ture-lure-luâ€) and the drum (“Pata-pata-panâ€).In both arrangements Guitar One has melody, and it fits nicely in a mix of IV and V position. There is no fingering, because your ensemble might want to choose between two different approaches...A less experienced ensemble might prefer to venture up the neck just to reach for the A and B notes, and return to the first position as soon as possible...A more experienced group might want to stay up the neck to get a more rounded tone throughout. Depending on your choice of fingering, slurs might be possible to improve the flow.There are two versions of the lower parts. In the first arrangement, in “SATB†style, Guitar 4 plays the bass; Guitar 3 provides, in the three verses, percussion, a choral countermelody, and finally a Hurdy-Gurdy style drone; Guitar provides a countermelody.In the second arrangement, the roles rotate at the end of each verse, so that all the accompanying players have three very different verses to play. Guitar 1 stays with the tune, because in a mixed ability ensemble, moving the tune about tends to highlight any weaknesses. Your students will love playing this new arrangement for three violas of one of the most prominentt concertos every violist studies. Even though research has shown that Handel did not compose this work, this concerto by Henri Casadesus has remained a staple in the viola repertoire. Very few students have the opportunity to perform the work with orchestra. Keyboard accompaniment provides the melodic lines and harmonies, but it is not the same feeling as performing with a string ensemble. Hearing the individual parts adds to the ensemble experience. This arrangement for three violas is designed to provide this ensemble experience. It is intended for three students all working on the this concerto by Casadesus. The Viola I part is the solo viola part as it appears in the original, with bowings, fingerings and cadenzas provided by the arranger. The Viola I part also plays in the tutti sections as needed. The Viola II part consists mostly of the melody in the orchestra tutti sections, as well as harmonizing lines with the Viola I part. The Viola III part provides the bass line and includes melodic lines as well. By learning and playing all three parts, students become familiar with how the solo part relates to the orchestra. Students learn to listen more carefully to the orchestra lines, developing a better sense of ensemble. By playing all parts, students develop a more complete sense of the concerto. College students and professionals will also have fun with these arrangements, a new approach to teaching this Concerto!

Shadorma - A shadorma has 6 line stanzas where the lines have a syllable count of 3,5,3,3,7,5 respectively. The syllable count was translated into meter therefore creating 3/8, 5/8, two measures of 3/8, 7/8, and 5/8 resulting in 6 measure phrases. II. Cinquain - A cinquain is an American Poem invented by Adelaide Crapsey. It is five lines long and uses a syllable count of 2,4,6,8,2 to determine the line breaks. Three possible variants are mirror 2,4,6,8,2,4,6,8,2; butterfly 2,3,6,8,2,2,4,6,8,2; and reversal 2,8,6,4,2. Mirror and reversal are used in this movement therefore creating a pattern of 2,4,6,8,2,8,6,4,2. The syllable count is reflected in the number of notes in each phrase. III. Bantu - The bantu originated from Swahili speakers therefore incorporating the idea of call and response. The stanzas are couplets where the first line is more metaphorical and the second line more concrete. Call and response between each instrument permeates this movement with alternations of which instrument is the leading voice.

The Revelations of Divine Love (Metaphors from Sea and Sky) (2009), an oratorio for soprano,baritone, chorus, and chamber orchestra (0000.1100.1perc.strings), was commissioned for and is dedicated to the choir ofRoyal Holloway, University of London and Rupert Gough, director of choral music.The texts of the work are adapted primarily from the writings of Julian of Norwich (c. 1342–1416).Julian is best-known for her Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love (c. 1393), believed to be the first Englishlanguagebook written by a woman. Considered one of the most significant English mystics of alltime, Julian lived a reclusive life as an anchoress at the Church of St. Julian in Norwich, England (hertrue name is unknown). Regarded even during her lifetime as a spiritual authority, her optimisticvisions have been very influential in the years that have followed.Texts are also drawn from three additional sources: an excerpt from the Book of Margery Kempe(translated by Christopher M. Brunelle), two poems by English poet Robert Herrick (1591–1674),and a poem by the American writer Elizabeth Kirschner (b. 1955).The primary concept underlying this oratorio is the presence of two distinct discourses. One is asequence taken from Julian’s religious visions. The other is a sonic geography of Nantucket Island(located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States). This interconnected conceptwas inspired by the writings of the great Scottish poet George Mackay Brown (1921–1996). Livinghis entire life on Scotland’s Orkney Islands, Mackay Brown consistently explored the transpositionof religious imagery and events to his native landscape. (For example, the poem Apple-Basket, Apple-Blossom takes the story and structure of the Stations of the Cross, and maps them onto imagery ofdistinctly Orcadian character.)The landscape of Nantucket Island has been the driving force behind a large number of mycompositions for many years. In this oratorio, Julian’s visions are transposed from Norwich andmapped onto the Nantucket landscape. Each movement of the work thus has two parallel purposes:a setting of the visionary words, and a portrayal of a specific place in Nantucket’s geography. Muchof the music was planned in the actual locations. Since the soloists and choir must, by necessity, singthe words, a great deal of the landscape is left to the orchestra. Thus, the orchestra’s role issubstantially greater than simply accompaniment.Because of these two discourses, the oratorio is not intended as comprehensive working out of allaspects of Julian’s visions, nor does it use her own structure and sequence. A dramatic Latin text setting in F minor, composed in the tintinnabuli style made famous by Arvo Pärt. Pärt calls his vocal composition technique tintinnabuli, a Latin word meaning ‘the ringing of bells’. Pärt claims that the three notes of a triad ‘ring like bells’. In tintinnabuli, the tonic triad is always present somewhere within the piece; either the root, third, or fifth of the tonic triad will always be heard. This provides the unique ability to create striking dissonances that remain unified by the underlying tonality, and resolve satisfyingly back into the tonic. This is evident when listening to Epitaphium Innocentum; the way that one or more lines drift away stepwise from the tonal center while others remain on it is jarring in motion, but very pleasing upon resolution. We are the heroes -- we are the axis of the stars.

Hammered Dulcimer parts are suitable for any C instrument. Solo lap harp versions of each piece are also included. The medley The Fiddler Dance the Light/Mor A Cheannaich swept the ensemble division of the Gulf Coast Harpers Celtic Contest a few years back. Hammered dulcimer/C Instrument carries the melody, trading off lead with harp while the flute plays countermelody. The lap harp version has left-hand melody with right hand descant. Song of the Water Kelpie has a dreamy setting with harmonies in the harp parts gradually expanding fuller and then tapering back, like ocean waves coming in and receding. It has right-hand harmonics in the opening measures. Hammered dulcimer plays in unison with the harp. Flute begins with a slow trill-like ornament, then plays almost canon style with the other two instruments through the middle section. The title selection, Lament for Limerick/Lochaber No More/Irish Lamentation Waltz is played mostly in unison among all three instruments. The full harp part can also be played solo. The left-hand of the harp part is mostly arpeggiated runs with some tenth dotted half note chords in between. The three Op.14 Quartets were advertised in the Wiener Zeitung on 15 January, 1791 as the composer's newest works. They were dedicated to M. Joseph de Preuer Senior, a lawyer resident in Linz. Although modest in scope and emotional depth, all three works reveal Hoffmeister as a craftsman of refined musical sensibilities. They show a clear grasp of the conversational style of the genre, as cultivated especially by his great compatriot and true master of the genre, Joseph Haydn, and reveal a kinship with the Mozartian string quartet style in their translucent scoring, harmonic richness and melodic invention. Hoffmeister's liking for third-related juxtapositions is frequently apparent, as is his awareness of the varied textural opportunities - duets and trio scoring for example - offered by the four voices. Taken together, the freshness and vitality of all three Op.14 Quartets make them extremely worthwhile additions to the repertory of 18th-century Viennese string quartets..
