Dr. Brian Kauth assembled a consortium of saxophone players to commission me to write a piece in four movements, each to be for a different member of the saxophone family(soprano, alto, tenor, baritone). He chose the theme of the “four horsemen of the apocalypse†because, as he puts it, “the saxophone was long considered ‘the devil’s instrument’due to the seedy and sultry qualities associated with it.â€ProgramThe story of the Four Horsemen comes from the biblical Book of Revelation. Each of the Horsemen is said to represent events that are supposed to usher in the Apocalypse, the final battle between good and evil. As with many biblical passages, there are numerous interpretations of this account debated among theologians. Those that I’ve taken in thispiece are strictly based on my own aesthetic requirements and should not be construed as taking any particular sides in these spiritual debates.The Four Horsemen symbolize the evils to come before the end of the world. It is said that a quarter of the world’s population is to be wiped out by a combination of these ills. The Horsemen pave the way for the finalbattle, the final judgement, and the Second Coming.The account begins with the White Horsemen, symbolizing pestilence. Next comes the Red Horse, representing war. Then the Black Horse, bringing widespread famine, especially against the poor of the world.Finally, the Pallid Horse, the personification of Death, reaping his reward in the victims of the tribulations.Performance NoteEach movement is assigned a different member of the saxophone family. Ideally it should be performed as such. However, if you do not have access to all four saxes, you may perform the movements on the sax or saxesof your choosing. The movements are written such that they will sound satisfactory on any of the saxes.

The Acts of the Apostles (2009), an oratorio for baritone, chorus, congregation/audience, and chamber orchestra (piano, organ, strings-suggested minimum of 3.3.3.2.1),was commissioned by The Memorial Church at Harvard University. It is dedicated to Edward Elwyn Jones and theHarvard University Choir.The biblical books of Luke and Acts form a pair of documents from a single author and with a single audience (thelikely-metaphorical “Theophilusâ€), yet they are unusual for being composed in such contrasting genres. Luke’sgospel, using Mark as a primary source throughout, features a comparable literary style to that of the otherevangelists. Acts, by contrast, is a historical monograph that charts the birth of the Church with dramatic storiesabout—and speeches from—the apostles, painting a vivid, if not necessarily chronological, picture of their victoriesand struggles. As such, it is a book that provides excellent source material for a dramatic choral libretto of this scale.Although much of Acts is focused on the ministry of Saul/Paul, this oratorio draws most of its material from thefirst third of the book, prior to and including the conversion of Saul. In the Prologue, Christ’s ascension is narratedand—following an orchestral Sinfonia—the chorus sings words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Plain in Luke’sgospel that foreshadow many of the trials the apostles go on to face. The astounding account of Pentecost follows:here, words from the book of Ruth, customarily read on the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), are included, telling thestory of a Moabite woman who converted to the Israelite faith—a parallel to the expansion of the Christian messageto all nations by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Prayer for Boldness, quoting Psalm 2, asks God for protection fromthe threats of persecution that the apostles will now face.Stephen, regarded as the proto-martyr of the Christian Church, offers one of the most developed speeches in Acts,only a small portion of which is presented here. Full of scriptural references, including the quotation from Isaiah“Heaven is my throne…â€, the end of the narrative is remarkable for two reasons: firstly, Stephen’s final wordsmirror those of Christ on the cross in Luke’s gospel—where Jesus forgives his executioners and prays “Father, intoyour hands I commend my spirit†(Luke 23:46); secondly, Saul is specifically mentioned as one who approved ofStephen’s stoning, indicative of the redemptive possibilities of the Christian message.The account of the baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch here in the oratorio ends with the First Song of Isaiah—whilenot quoted in Acts, it seems a fitting conclusion to the scene as Philip and the eunuch were reading Isaiah together,and the canticle has often been associated by Christians with the rite of baptism. Similarly, the story of Saul’sConversion is followed here by a Christological poem found in Paul’s letter to the Philippians, though it is likely aquotation from an earlier source. It is often regarded as the earliest extant Christian hymn.The Acts of the Apostles concludes with Luke’s realistic assessment that in spite of Paul’s energetic evangelism manyremained unconvinced by the Christian message. At the heart of both Luke’s gospel and Acts is the tension betweenthe uniquely important role of the Jewish traditions that Jesus himself practiced and the expansion of the gospel togentiles, of whom Luke himself is one. It is appropriate, therefore, to follow Paul’s message of salvation to thegentiles with the Magnificat: a canticle that emphasizes the promises of God to the people of Israel throughouthistory.Three traditional hymn texts are found in the oratorio, each set congregationally to a pre-existing tune. In the words of the old Victorians: The highest refinement of that beauty is unattainable without splendour of activity and delicate strength. Exercise is now recognised to be as great a necessity in woman's education as in man's we are learning that many bodily defects and much of her weak health is attributable to the want of it; more especially in youth, when the frame is growing. Such exercises must, however, be carried out under a system; irregularly conducted, they do more harm than good. The constitution must be coaxed, not strained; the strength not unduly taxed, no over-fatigue ensuing; for exhaustion makes people look worn and old. The exertion must not be too violent, and the health and physical development of each pupil must be specially studied. Early morning or evening are the best times to select, but on no account immediately after a meal. The clothing should not be too warm, nor interfere in any way with the action of the limbs. A musical accompaniment will best preserve the necessary rhythm - the time, four or eight beats to a bar; failing this, the pupils should be taught to sing or count in concert, thereby keeping up their interest and zest. A castanet will, failing better means, help to mark the time with or without music. One of our aims is to revive these compositions and bring them to the attention of players and audiences.

The Home Coming March (1908) - Concert Band Score and Parts PDF Music by: ET Paull Of course, eventually, all the soldiers and sailors had to eventually come home from all the battles and Paull had that eventuality well covered also. The artwork on the front cover (of unknown origin) is one that is full of imagery that covers all aspects of the services, Army and Navy and is full of patriotic and familial ideals. The border lists all of the US States and the corner pictures depict aspects of homecoming. The main image is a parade of victory. Let's let Paull explain it all to us as he did on the inside cover. Why This Piece Of Music Was Named The Home Coming March Explanatory When the author had about completed the music of the present march, it occurred to him that it might be well to have suggestions made from a number of people, recommending a good name for same, for after all there is considerable in a name. He, therefore, had a special advertisement placed in several of the leading music Journals throughout the country, offering a prize of $10.00 in gold to anyone suggesting a name that would be accepted. Over three thousand names were sent in from all parts of the country, even from far away New Zealand and Australia, in which countries the author's marches are universal favorites. Included in the letters received was one from Mr. W. C. Bates, Secretary of the Sheffield Advertising Agency of New York and Chicago, in which he suggested the name The Home Coming March. After due consideration, this name was accepted, and the prize was awarded and paid to Mr. Bates, who stated that he was prompted to recommend this name on account of having been present during the impressive celebration of Old Home Week in Boston, Mass., last year. Probably no one idea is so universally dominant in the mind of the Human Race as that of home, or matters pertaining to home. The author believes that the name selected is one that will appeal to everyone; as the many pleasant associations with the words Home Coming are almost without limit. The title page of this march is without any exception the handsomest seen on a piece of music. The main body of the title pace represents a street scene, with buildings decorated and shows a handsome royal Arch of Welcome in the foreground, gaily decorated with flags, emblems, and bunting. A band is shown passing under the arch, leading a procession of the Home Guard, and thousands of people waving handkerchiefs, banners, flags, etc. Four smaller scenes also appear on the page, one representing the Home Coming of the soldier from war; another scene shows the Home Coming of the sailor boys embarking from their battleships; another scene represents the Home Coming reunion of the family and loved ones; the fourth scene represents the Home Coming of the father from work, where a little tot has been watching and waiting, and runs to meet him. The whole design of the title page is then surrounded by a border of differently designed medallions, on which appears the names of all the States of the Union, making without a doubt, the most unique and attractive title page ever conceived for a piece of music. One thing Paull mastered early in his career was the art of overstatement! Musically, this march is beginning to show the repetitiveness of many of Paull's works, especially evident as time passed. Once Paull found the formula (a fabulous cover and a playable, rousing march) that sold music, he stuck with it and was quite successful as a result.This arrangement is for Full Concert Band with the original optional piano part ( Not on the score). The construction of the sail consisted of a box the size of a loaf of bread (known as a CubeSat), metal booms, and four incredibly thin triangular Mylar sails. The vehicle was propelled by light from the Sun and in future projects; the sail would continue to gain momentum, ultimately accelerating to high speeds, allowing for travel along limitless distances. ​ Luminous Travels - The Journey of LightSail-A tells the account of this space-faring vessel in four major musical scenes. The first scene, UNFOLDING, features a lyrical melody first heard on the solo trombone then carried off by of the ensemble. The second scene, COMPUTING, depicts the inner-workings of the CubeSat. This new theme is rhythmic and aggressive, suggesting the hazards to come. The third scene, BLACKOUT, represents the communication blackouts that occurred during the flight that left the project in peril. This scene marks the cadenza of the work and depicts the lonely and frigid environment of space. Eventually, the unease is assuaged bringing hope back to the project. With a new sense of optimism, the final scene, ACCELERATING, represents the increase in speed that will occur in future solar sail space projects. The music from the earlier sections returns and changes, and as the music presses forward; the solo trombone rises into its highest register at breakneck speed as the solar sail crosses along infinite space. ​ The piece is dedicated to Keith Hunter, who has been a champion of my music and for whom Luminous Travels is dedicated. ​.

The Drumfire Was Incessant, and Continued All Night With Unabated Fury is a solo piano piece, inspired by Newton Wanliss’s harrowing account of the Battle of Pozieres in his 1929 war biography The History of the 14th Battalion, A.I.F. The Battle of Pozieres ran between July and August 1916, as part of the First World War’s Somme Offensive. The composition focuses on the days leading up to August 9th, 1916, when my great-great uncle Private Leslie Robins, an infantryman in the 14th Battalion, was shot and wounded.In the early stages of writing the piece, whilst conducting preliminary research into the Battle of Pozieres, I was struck by the disparity between the British High Command’s notion of formulating a ‘plan’ for the battle, and the actuality of what occurred once soldiers ‘went over the top’ into no-man’s land. This dichotomous concept – exerting control over an inherently fluid and dynamic situation – I found to be most intriguing. It segued neatly into my aesthetic explorations of the role of improvisation (a dynamic process) within a larger notated context (a controlled environment). I decided that this dichotomy would play a fundamental role within the piece.Australian pianist Zubin Kanga commissioned The Drumfire… for his 2012 Spectrum concert series. The piece was given its world premiere on August 11th 2012 at the Melbourne Recital Centre, and was also performed at the Independent Theatre in Sydney on August 16th 2012.

Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday, and this piece was written as an opening to the service after the pastor read a Gospel account of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. However, later in the service is the Passion Reading, and while I had music for that specifically, I felt compelled to acknowledge that after the celebratory acceptance by the populace on the day of His entry into the city, Christ in the garden prayed and contemplated the ordeal He was to endure the next day. This anthem, written for a small choir of SAB, captures the essence of both events and sets up the Passion which is to follow. The part writing varies between unison/octave strength, three part texture, and often moves smoothly from one sonority to another, allowing the voices to blend and the lines to converge into one.

But a few of the kids who spent most of their time here at this playground died over the past couple of years. Rumor has it that this playground is haunted by some of the kids that used to come here all the time… Not really haunted in a scary way because they are kids. But their spirits live here and man are they energetic. All day, All night, shenanigans would happen here and yet, the police could never find any evidence. At this point, the police reports have to say something about ghosts considering they never have any evidence to give an account. The Graveyard Playground tells the tale of five kids whose spirits are confined to this playground.
