Published by Ben Ledochowski (A0.1023643). Far to the westernmost regions of Russia, and then farther still, there is a place known as theDancing Forest of Kaliningrad. It is a mysterious, otherworldly place where trees grow in tangles,knots, and other unfathomable shapes, a place described by local psychics as a point of conflict where great positive and negative forces collide. Due to its remarkable air of mystery, the forest has woven its way into the legends and folklore of the region. My personal favorite legend about it goes as follows: The Prussian prince Barty used to hunt in these forests. Chasing a Roe deer one day, heheard a wonderful tune, and as he came to a field, he saw a beautiful girl playing a lyre. She was a Christian and her name was Predislava. The prince proposed to her but she replied that she would marry only a man of her faith. Prince Barty agreed to become a Christian as long as she could prove the power of her invisible God was more powerful than the surrounding trees. Predislava played her lyre. Birds grew silent, and the trees started dancing. The prince then took a bracelet from his hand and gave it to her as a token of their betrothal. On this very spot, many years later, there grew the Dancing Forest.This piece is my homage to the Dancing Forest of Kaliningrad and all its associated legends. Premiered by the Santa Teresa High School Concert Band in May 2019, the work is scored for a concert band of intermediate size and skill level and is designed to help introduce high school musicians to modal music and unconventional key signatures. Furthermore, the piece is inspired by multiple rhythmic and harmonic elements of rock and folk music in an attempt to help bridge the gap between popular music and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire. Published by Vessela Stoyanova (A0.1201464). “Mountain Goats and Other Creatures†was Commissioned by Rachel Jayson and the Lexington High School Symphony Orchestra.It was inspired by the folk music of my native land of Bulgaria, informed by my experience as a rock musician, reimagined through the lense of my place inside of a community of like-minded artists and musicians, where I have made my real home today. The first movement - Mountain Goats - is a sort of celebration of renewal, promise, and hope. It represents the tenacious will of grass growing through the snow of early spring, the powerful longing for human connection, the warmth of the sun against your skin on a bright chilly day. It carries both the pristine optimism of youth, and the nervous energy of trying something for the first time. The second movement - Samodivi - in contrast is dark, heavy and full of passion and desire. According to Balkan myths, Samodivi are gorgeous nymphs who live in the woods and often seduce men with their beautiful song and dance. They are feared and envied at the same time. The music of the second movement represents the mysterious dark forest at night - lower strings create the moss under your feet, higher strings use extended techniques to simulate the noise of branches clicking the wind, a few soloists represent different creatures - both real and imaginary - scurry through the woods above your head. Then you hear the lone song of a Samodiva in the distance, your heart is beating hard, your steps are leading you straight towards the call against your better judgement. It is the ancient story of fear and desire, of self control and complete abandon. You, the listener, become witness to a wild dance, fire in the woods, snakes in their long blond hairs, slender bodies dressed in white clouds dancing to an imaginary beat.  Then it all ends abruptly and you left to wonder: Was it real? Did I see it? Am I safe?The third and final movement of the piece is based on a popular rhythmic folk dance in Bulgaria called Kopanitsa, while the melody creates a fugue between the different voices of the orchestra. The Kids are the little of the mountain goats - free to frolic high above tree line, above any human traces, as close to the clouds as one can get and still be touching the ground below. They are carefree, daring, and somewhat naive, yet safe under the watchful gaze of their parent. The movements ends in cascading repetitions of a musical motif in 5/8 representing the relentless passing of time or at least our perception of it.

Smith (A0.938726). Druantia is an eternal Mother Goddess and Queen of the Druids in ancient Celtic folklore. She was known as the protector of forests, and a patron of knowledge, creativity, passion, sex, and fertility of both plants and animals. She is often portrayed as a beautiful, red-headed, slender woman with elven features, draped in forest-green robes. As the protector of forests, she was also guardian of forest spirits and sprites. These spirits are said to inhabit trees, a belief that spans across many cultures, like the Kodoma in Japanese folklore. Druantia’s Dance, a pizzicato string orchestra piece, depicts a joyous ritual of Druantia and her forest spirits; they scurry through the forest, dancing together, while creating new life and blessing the plants and animals around them, aiding in their growth.

About Two Army FantasiesTwo Army Fantasies is composed in 2014. They are composed during my time serving the army. The 2 pieces are The Attack on a Red Ant on Me and Monkeys Dancing in the Rain. I composed The Attack on a Red Ant on Me after I was bitten by a small red ant in a grassy area while I was accompanying some workers. The last cluster chord is to be played brutally and crispy as a revenge! I composed the Monkeys Dancing in the Rain as a homage to the monkeys living in the forest near my army camp. Sometimes i wonder what the monkeys are doing when it is raining. Do they hide in their trees? Or dance in the rain, just like how this piece is depicting.Two Army Fantasies is dedicated to my student, Mr Remus Toh. .

Daniel Carr #30875. Published by Daniel Carr (A0.918711). The Three Nocturnes are highly impressionistic in nature, they depict three progressing times of night: dusk, midnight and dawn. The first movement contains a harp-like piano accompaniment over which the flute sings – generally light and free. Near the end, as midnight approaches, the music grows darker in character. The second movement has a concentrated, quiet intensity -- more whisper than scream. It is primitive and trance-like. The flute plays without vibrato – sounding almost like an ancient wooden flute. The third and final movement depicts dawn as the sun bursts upon the horizon, shining on the flowers and trees that had been hidden by darkness of night. It is a joyful and dancing movement, with a capricious middle section suggesting children chasing fireflies through a dense forest which the sun has not yet penetrated. Both the first and third Nocturnes make extensive use of the highest register of the flute.
