Here is a fresh, fun and entertaining Theme and Variations on Two National Anthems - New Zealand and United Kingdom to challenge Grade 8+ players. It commences with a whizzy Toccata to get the audience in the mood before announcing the Themes. These lead to a set of Variations, which includes one where the player will need a plunger mute along with ad libitum pitch bends and growling to create a somewhat inebriated feel, all leading to the last energetic movement. When entertaining children or in a less formal setting, the composer has often described each variation, such as Pagliacci (Clown), Jumping Bean, Tarantella and Late for Dinner. The composer invites the player to play straight through or be as entertaining as you want.This piece serves as a great concert or audition item. Enjoy!

It is a mostly humorous piece aimed at entertaining the audience and the members of the orchestra. I also intended it to be a suitable companion to the Rossini Introduction, Theme and Variations, also featured on the Jacksonville Symphony's 2014-15 season opener. Keenly aware of Peter's fine soloistic abilities I approached organization of the work around quotations from well known clarinet solos. The fun and fascination with disguising oneself to be someone else for a moment has been expressed many times in music through compositions such as Un ballo in maschera, Masquerade or Carnaval. In the humorous variations on a theme of Robert Schumann, Peter Wittrich lets the Fröhliche Landmann [Happy Peasant] slip into different roles and sets out with him on a journey through time from the Baroque to the modern era. In ten variations, Wittrich makes the Landmann familiar with the different styles and famous themes of the music epochs by treating Robert Schumann's popular theme contrapuntally in the sense of Bach, imposing Mozart's sonata form on it or letting the Landmann dance a proud polonaise with Frédéric Chopin. Der fröhliche Landmann also becomes a jazz pianist and improvises with Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Petersen in a blues sound before he indulges, in a Grand finale, in the brilliant virtuosity of the 19th century together with Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Rachmaninov. Apart from performing the entire work, individual variations can be arranged in small cycles according to preferences in style, e.g. for Jugend musiziert, or counter-posed against the original work. A fresh and entertaining contribution to the Schumann Year 2010.

This arrangement by Ray Kirkham for a duo of Cornet and Trumpet (or two Trumpets or Cornets) with Piano accompaniment captures the essence of the virtuosic work and includes the famous Theme with 5 Variations. Mr. Kirkham has included a performance suggestion that includes some optional acting by the performers. Naji Hakim (*1955), French composer of Lebanese descent, not only writes pieces for his principal instrument, the organ; even his piano works are characterized by many different sources, his major source of inspiration often being folk songs such as 'Auprès de ma blonde' whose melody dates back to the 16th century. The theme, which is introduced with a typical march rhythm, is developed in seven entertaining variations. One of the most popular French folk songs, interpreted by Elvis Presley and Doris Day among others, still is sung and played today. The present arrangement is an effective addition to the repertoire of every pianist.

After much deliberation I decided these compositions would serve a dual purpose. First, they would be a progression from easy to difficult beginning with Evensong and ending with Theme & Variations; their purpose, to help solidify the student's first position thereby creating a firmer foundation on which to build all remaining positions. Second, they would be 'parlor room' music; entertaining and challenging enough yet readily playable thereby enticing gifted amateurs to get together and run through them merely for fun.

The first movement is in sonata form, written in a neo-romantic style and contrasts the different registers of the clarinet: the rich and beautiful chalumeau register in the first theme, with grim and melancholic character, and the more brilliant higher notes of the clarinet in the second theme, flowing and operatic. The theme on the second movement is meant to entice the imagination of the listener with the image of a minstrel telling of a journey made a long time ago, entertaining the audience with the variations that unfold, only to return with the opening melody back in the end, as if teaching the morals of the story.

Are you my friend or the friend of the tiger?! The piece has a few obstacles of its own. The Chaconne was composed for organ but not published during Johann Pachelbel’s lifetime. First Publication was in 1901 by Breitkopf und Härtel. The four bar/measure theme is repeated as are all 25 variations. In almost every instance the repeat would have been more elaborate or played in a different register on the organ.In arranging the Chaconne for wind players I have used the different characteristics of the wind instruments in varying combinations and changes of register to create what I hope is an enjoyable and entertaining concert piece for players of advanced intermediate standard. The three part writing has been expanded to the five instruments of the standard woodwind quintet to give a wider scope for variation of scoring which also enables the players some breathing space.The dynamic markings are editorial so do feel free to use your own.
