This collection of ballads (six instrumental and ten vocal) was composed over a period of thirty years. I place these works together because the ballad is my favorite genre of song. All the songs are presented in lead-sheet format. The vocal pieces, however, are in addition given in their original arrangements. Some of these songs in the arranged form are not truly jazz inflected. I believe, though, that an inventive pianist may give them a jazz feel using the lead-sheets as blueprints. With some of the vocal works, I have transposed them up in order to make them more comfortable on the keyboard. The arrangements remain in their original keys. The vocal pieces are from either my Dorothy Parker musical, You Might as Well Live (which has been performed by Tony-Award-Winner Michele Pawk and Broadway star Karen Mason) or from a cabaret revue, entitled Somebody Write Me a Song (which has been performed by Tony-Award-Winner Debbie Gravitte and Tony-Nominee Liz Callaway). The vocal pieces are suitable for cabaret performances or audition purposes. The instrumental pieces are designed for jazz performers. The first piece, Anders' Theme, was originally written for sax. We have been frequent collaborators since 2011, when he premiered the complete set of my Three Settings of W. B. Yeats for string quartet and tenor. At his urging, I transcribed and published my Three Poems of Christina Rossetti (originally for medium voice) for high voice, which he premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory in 2014. American Death Ballads was premiered by him at the San Francisco Conservatory, November 1, 2015, with pianist John Churchwell, and at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Conference in Chicago, July 10, 2016, with pianist Warren Jones.The choice of texts for my American Death Ballads was inspired partly by Copland’s Old American Songs, which I deeply admire, but more by my dear friend and colleague the late Conrad Susa’s Two Murder Ballads. The ingenuity of Susa’s accompaniments for his ballads in imagining anew the original source material owes a great deal to Copland’s accompaniment for his songs. Though the content of my songs is completely original and not based on preexisting melodies, I have tried to expand on this further, as the texts are much longer, and go through many different moods and characters. The four texts I chose include stories about murder, death, and dying. Though two of the texts were written in England, they traveled to the colonies almost immediately. The subjects of the texts had spent time in America, and their stories were well known to Americans.Wicked Polly is a cautionary tale. Polly has lived a dissolute and immoral life, saying, 'I'll turn to God when I grow old.' Suddenly taken ill, she realizes that it is too late to repent. She dies in agony and is presumably sent to hell; young people are advised to heed. My musical setting is stately and preacherly in character for the narrator; for Polly it becomes pleading and remorseful. The Unquiet Grave was brought to the attention of Alan Lomax, the great American field collector of folk music, by English folk singer Shirley Collins. The text is taken from an English folk song dating from 1400. In The Unquiet Grave, a young man mourns his dead lover too fervently and prevents her from obtaining peace. The dead woman complains that his weeping is keeping her from peaceful rest. He begs a kiss; she tells him it would kill him. When he persists, wanting to join her in death, she explains that once they were both dead their hearts would simply decay, and that he should enjoy life while he has it. My setting is in a flowing Andante with a rocking accompaniment. Three voices are delineated here: the narrator, the mournful lover, and the dead lover speaking from the grave. The Dying Californian first appeared in the New England Diadem in 1854. Its lyrics are based on a letter from a New Englander’s sailor to his brother who is dying at sea while on the way to California to seek his fortune in the California gold fields. He implores his brother to impart his message to his father, mother, wife, and children. My setting opens with the singer alone in a moderate dirge tempo, then, joined by the piano, moves through many tonalities and moods before ending with supreme confidence as the speaker 'gained a port called Heaven/Where the gold will never rust.'Captain Kidd was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy and murder in 1701. The American connection to this ballad is that Kidd escaped to America and for a time lived in New York and Boston, though he was a wanted criminal by the British authorities and was extradited to Britain, where he was hung at 'Executioner’s Dock.' The lyric was printed in Britain in 1701, traveling to the colonies almost immediately. Though the didactic tone of the text is similar to Wicked Polly, it expresses no regret until the final lines: 'Take warning now by me, and shun bad company, / Lest you come to hell with me, for I must die.' My setting is fast and spirited, expressing the confidence of a man who lived life as he wanted. -David Conte.

Â Then she starts talking to the flowers, asking them about her lover. Â It concludes with the famous he loves me...he loves me not.... as she plucks the petals from the daisy. Â My arrangement adds quite a bit of drama to the piece. Â I have converted the main theme into an oom-pah-pah waltz and greatly increased the tempo to a brisk concert waltz for the first two verses. Â The B theme, where she talks to the flowers, resorts to a slower waltz ballad similar to the original. Â There is then a brief recapitulation of the oom-pah-pah theme building up to the suspenseful climax. Â I created a lento ending as the answers to her questions slowly unfold. Â This is a great concert piece full of passion and energy that can be dramatized. This is the collection of classical piano repertoire I created for work with my own students, most of whom were not primarily interested in "classical" music. <br> <br> In my experience, every elementary piano student should be given the opportunity to successfully play:<br> Spinning Song (even if you leave out the middle section at first)<br> Minuet in G (page one)<br> Fur Elise (page one)<br> <br> Eventually, they should experience (if not master--that's ultimately up to them) each piece in this collection. <br> <br> All hand positions and finger numbers are presented so that students can spend their time preparing successfully--not "figuring out" with endless frustration and incorrect solutions. <br> <br> "Minuet in G" from the Bach notebook is a great example. Let's consider just the first page. Many (most) elementary students would love to play this piece. The RH by itself is easy. The LH is also "not difficult", but it's not self-evident, either. The notes are easy enough, and the fingering choices seem inconsequential. You could play it with several different fingering solutions.<br> <br> Hands Together: Humans can pay attention to only one thing at a time: in this case, the RH or the LH. Whichever hand is receiving the attention, the other must be on "automatic pilot". You can switch focus rapidly to give the appearance that you are paying attention to two things equally, but that is not what is happening. <br> <br> So... both hands need to be rehearsed (better word than "practiced") until the correct execution is the "default" behavior. <br> <br> If that (sufficient correct repetetition) has not happened, then consistent successful performance with both hands is never achieved. Students complain that they wish they could be more "consistent". They don't have a chance, sadly. <br> <br> "Practice Makes... "<br> <br> If you said "Perfect" then you've fallen into a sinister trap. <br> <br> "Practice makes Permanent." When a student actually does what has been assigned, in many cases that is the beginning of the end of their piano career. <br> <br> Here's the process in general:<br> Students "write in their own fingering" and then, and then practice (repeat) their incorrect solutions. They are unable to perform the desired piece consistently and don't know why. How long can a student tolerate this ineffective approach?<br> <br> That's something for us professionals to consider.<br> <br> <br> Perfect for introducing classical repertoire (similar to Suzuki, Bastien Piano Literature, etc). No note is presented without its corresponding proper fundamental technique (fingering). In other words, there is no such thing as a note separate from its hand position and fingering. <br> <br> The hand position notation is used to better communicate what exactly is being demanded of the student. Students’ repertoire is no longer limited by their music staff reading ability. Nor do they suffer from their own painful inability to solve technical issues. This approach restores “playing music on the piano” to primacy and supports “helping a student play music on the piano” as the central activity of the piano lesson. <br> <br> Weak students are able to play real (not simplified) music and not feel penalized. Strong students complete their preparation even more efficiently. In all cases, spending less time on fingering means more time for higher levels of musicianship: coordination, pedaling, physical technique, control, tone, dynamics, tempo, rhythm, articulation, phrasing, expression, emotion, drama, compositional analysis, and historical context.<br> <br> Good luck!<br> Scott Camp<br> scottcampislandpiano@gmail.com

The first five of these impromptus are intended for skilled players, requiring great tone, technique and musicality from both performers. They are outstanding works for contest, concert or recital, either individually or as a set. In the second impromptu, both instruments explore impressionistic harmonies and melodies, Â with each instrument seemingly free to paint sounds on their own, yet always perfectly complementing each other. The effect is often more akin to a smoky jazz ballad than a piece of chamber music. The work begins, develops and ends on constantly shifting musical ground, always questioning, but never resolving. Virginia Commonwealth University Professor Antonio J. García has taken Haydn’s “London” Symphony as a point of departure for his London Town Fantasy for trombone and orchestra (or piano accompaniment), commissioned by the Charlottesville Symphony Society for the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra (Virginia). CUSO Music Director Kate Tamarkin sought a piece that would “showcase the trombone in a jazz ballad style and somehow reference the Haydn ‘London’ Symphony” that would follow it on the program, knowing that the first half of the concert would also include the Brahms “Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn.” She and trombone soloist Nathan Dishman suggested the title “London Town Fantasy,” envisioning a potential intersection with elements of George Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day (In London Town),” which seemed apt given a scheduled trip of García’s to London during the compositional process.<br> <br> Listeners familiar with Haydn's “London” Symphony No. 104" will notice references starting at the first measure. And the violin part at the outset of the Symphony’s fourth movement, Allegro Spiritoso, offered the core of what became the melody to this Fantasy. The melody of the “bridge” section of the tune is crafted from the first seven measures of the opening theme of Haydn’s first movement (Allegro).<br> <br> The use of “A Foggy Day” had to be more subtle, as copyright law must be observed, limiting the use of its actual melody within this piece. But Gershwin’s harmony actually is the harmonic basis under the melody of the Fantasy; and his devotees will recognize that when the soloist improvises medium-swing jazz with the orchestra, the chord progression is indeed entirely that of “A Foggy Day.” (An optional written-out solo is provided.)<br> <br> Note that the string section is not asked to play swing eighth-notes at any time. Their jazz-phrased passages are couched in even-eighth, syncopated double-timed-sixteenth, and triplet-eighth cross-rhythmed lines well-rooted in the jazz tradition. Winds and brass, however, have swing-eighth passages to perform (and some even-sixteenth lines).<br> <br> The superb piano reduction makes the six-minute London Town Fantasy ideal for performances on student and professional recitals, and no improvisational skills are needed by the pianist. Available MIDI demonstration recordings of the duo and orchestral settings, with MIDI soloist or “minus one,” make rehearsals easy and even provide the aural basis for your own potential “virtual” performance.

I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and released on his album Going Public in 1977. Barry Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976[2] after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975.[3] It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977.[3] Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976.[4]The original version was recorded by Captain & Tennille, who worked with Johnston in the early 1970s with the Beach Boys. It appears on their 1975 album Love Will Keep Us Together. The first release of I Write the Songs as a single was by teen idol David Cassidy from his 1975 solo album The Higher They Climb, which was also produced by Johnston. Cassidy's version reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in August of that year.[5]Johnston has stated that, for him, the I in the song is God,[2] and that songs come from the spirit of creativity in everyone. He has said that the song is not about his Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson.[6]Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip.[3] After persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, Manilow recorded the song, and his version of I Write the Songs was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling. It first charted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 15, 1975, reaching the top of the chart nine weeks later, on January 17, 1976. Cash Box said of Manilow's version Good work Barry describing the song as melodic, ballad-like beginning grows into an operatic crescendo, all done in clear production that all age groups will appreciate.[7] Record World called it an uplifting production number and perhaps [Manilow's] strongest offering since 'Mandy.' [8].
