Steinberg (A0.870387). This work commemorates the founding and settlement of the western United States. The piece consists of a number of musical episodes that evoke key historic milestones that took place as the west developed and grew over time. The work opens with a fanfare tribute to the mountains and valleys that were first seen by those arriving there. The fanfare starts out majestically and leads into a chorale tune that evokes the calmness of the river and the greenery around it. The clock then moves to a later time when the area was settled by bands of Indian tribes, dwellings and villages. This then melds into tribal life along the river and growth of the Indian culture. Suddenly, the sound of Indian raiding tribes is heard. This then settles down and Pioneer Wagon Trains are heard heading west, their wheels stumbling through mud and rock. In comes the U.S. Calvary. Trumpet calls are heard as the Calvary advances and eventually overcome the Indians, pushing them out of the west. The choral tune heard earlier is brought back which then leads to the sounds of the first trains heading west. As more and more trains arrive, the sound of towns and cities sprouting up is heard. At this point, the music gains momentum as more and more settlers arrive. Dance hall music can suddenly be heard followed by a segment that evokes the building of farms and raising of livestock. The music picks up into the 20th century culminating in a grand return of the opening River Valley fanfare heard at the start of the piece. A popular piece that resonates well with audiences bringing them a spirit of renewal and hope that they will find most uplifting.

The themes are placed on key map tablatures that notate the melodies and chords, and provide standard chord symbols as well. Series 5FC - To make fingering of melodies easy to follow, each 5-finger group begins with a finger number and colored notes. Then successive fingered groups are identified with contrasting colored notes. Notes not belonging in a 5-fingered group are white.This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group. (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

The singer recalled to CCM Magazine presents 100 Greatest Songs In Christian Music: It resonated for two reasons - first, because my parents had given their lives to evangelize, and their love for the people they were serving around the world was motivated by Christ's love for them; so that was definitely one of the reasons why I gravitated to the song. The other reason was that for the for the first time, I suppose, I was realizing that it isn't just those who never heard about the Lord who needed him. I knew that I was surrounded by people just like me who were living kind of an external, performance-based Christianity, but they had no light. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group. (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. Presented in lead-sheet format (melody, chords, and lyrics), and written in keys accessible to all C instruments and several D instruments such as the penny whistle and mountain dulcimer, the material offers plenty of arrangements. Hymns can be sung by a soloist, in unison by a small group with chordal accompaniment, or a mixed ensemble.

At 2:10 the fanfares herald the many compliments they get from 'Huntsman gallant and sheperds grey, doughtyand blythsome men' they encounter along the way.
