CONJUNCTION: The Christmas Star of 2020

Full Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976734 Composed by Robert Myers. 20th Century,Christmas,Contemporary. Score and parts. 99 pages. WheatMyer Music #6496769. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976734). CONJUNCTION interprets the convergence of Jupiter and Saturn near the end of the year 2020 as a celestial metaphor for the good news of Christ's birth in a replay of the Star of Bethlehem. Hence, its subtitle of The Christmas Star of 2020. The music, along with narration from selected Old and New Testament scriptures, delivers a message of hope amid the turmoil and chaos of current times. It's written for smaller concert bands hungry for challenging music. Ample cues and doubling allow for flexible instrumentation while mixed meters, varying tempos and textures, and interesting solo lines provide opportunities for strong players to shine. CONJUNCTION is also available with strings for orchestra.PROGRAM NOTES:2020 is widely characterized for its maladies: murders, burning cities, riots, a pandemic, economic shocks, and political turmoil. For some of us, it also held personal tragedy such as my brother’s passing from COVID. But, 2020 also brought a sign of hope, namely the celestial phenomenon known as the Great Conjunction of 2020. For earth-bound observers, this was the closest approach of Jupiter and Saturn in almost 400 years as they appeared to almost touch in the early evening sky to produce the most brilliant evening star of our lifetimes. The occurrence of the event in November-December neatly coincided with the Advent season, peaking just before Christmas Day. One could hardly fail to note the parallels with the Christmas star of Matthew’s gospel which gave the conjunction its alternate name, the Christmas Star of 2020. Thus, this star spoke, to those with ears to hear, the same message the prophet Isaiah wrote about the coming Messiah, The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. This star thus served to remind us that the LORD has not rejected us; He will show His favor again; His love has not vanished; His promises have not failed; He has not forgotten to be merciful or compassionate; and we are called to remember His mighty deeds (Psalm 77). CONJUNCTION: The Christmas Star of 2020 is inspired by these particulars. For the music, I looked to Gustav Holst’s The Planets for themes that would portray Jupiter and Saturn’s pas de deux. I selected several motives from the corresponding movements mixed and matched in sometimes easily recognized quotations and other times in heavily camouflaged derivations. An exuberant polyphonic passage recaps themes from both Jupiter and Saturn when the music resolves from uncertainty into hopefulness. While Holst’s motives provide CONJUNCTION’s foundation I also used Handel’s Messiah for transitory and climactic material. You will hear his The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light in transitions and a short trombone solo. And a re-harmonization of the opening line from For unto us a child is born brings the music to a joyous climax.Although the music stands firmly on its own, I elected to incorporate some narrative to make the musical sentiment explicit. In a commentary on 2020’s grim events, I took adaptations of Habakkuk 1:2-4 and 2 Tim 3:1-4 and set them over Saturn’s plodding and ominous harmonies. Contrasting replies shimmer with hope as the narration melds Isaiah 9:2 and Luke 1:78-79 over another Saturn motive set against pitch sets from Jupiter’s main hymn theme. Still, it’s the music that tells the story of the Christmas Star of 2020.Please visit my website for a complete score preview: https://wheatmyermusic.com/conjunction-the-christmas-star-of-2020I feel somewhat guilty making claim to this music as almost all the building blocks are taken from other composers. But the end result is neither a medley, nor an arrangement, rather it is something clearly new, so I call it my own with deep respect to those giants on whose shoulders I stand.Robert MyersS.D.G.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1008264 Composed by William Brenner. Contemporary. Score and parts. 80 pages. William Brenner #5370501. Published by William Brenner (A0.1008264). Halifax was devastated on 6 December 1917 when two ships collided in the city's harbour, one of them a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945.(...)In early December, one of the merchant ships in port was the large, Norwegian vessel Imo, en route from Halifax to New York to pick up relief supplies (...) Another was the French munitions ship Mont-Blanc - filled with tons of benzol, the high explosive picric acid, TNT and gun cotton - arriving in Halifax to join a convoy across the ocean.(...)The Imo was departing the harbour on the morning of 6 December 1917 (...) Imo had an experienced, local harbour pilot on board, William Hayes, who knew the navigation rules of the harbour. However, earlier encounters that morning with two inbound vessels moving towards Bedford Basin - both of which Imo had passed starboard-to-starboard - resulted in the unusual position that Imo now occupied, too far to the east (...) The Mont-Blanc had arrived outside Halifax the previous day and anchored overnight at the mouth of the harbour. On the morning of 6 December, the ship was cleared by harbour authorities to proceed toward Bedford Basin. Despite the Mont-Blanc's dangerous cargo, there was no special protocol for the passage of munitions ships in the harbour. Other ships such as the Imo were not ordered to hold their positions that morning until the Mont-Blanc had made safe passage through the port. Francis Mackey, Mont-Blanc's pilot, was guiding the ship inbound on the Dartmouth-side of the Narrows, when he encountered the Imo heading straight towards him in what he believed was Mont-Blanc's lane. Mackey would later maintain that the Imo was moving at an unsafe speed for such a large, unwieldly ship in the harbour, and also that incoming ships (in this case Mont-Blanc) had the right-of-way over outgoing vessels. Regardless of the accuracy of those claims, what is certain is that the Imo was sailing too far to the east, in what should have been Mont-Blanc's path. After a series of whistles and miscommunications between the officers and pilots on the two ships, and failed manoeuvres to avoid a collision, the Imo struck the starboard bow of the Mont-Blanc. After a few moments the two ships parted, leaving a gash in Mont-Blanc's hull and generating sparks that ignited volatile grains of dry picric acid, stored below its decks. (...) The Mont-Blanc exploded at 9:04:35 a.m., sending out a shock wave in all directions, followed by a tsunami that washed violently over the Halifax and Dartmouth shores. More than 2.5 square km of Richmond were totally levelled, either by the blast, the tsunami, or the structure fires caused when buildings collapsed inward on lanterns, stoves and furnaces.Homes, offices, churches, factories, vessels (including the Mont-Blanc), the railway station and freight yards - and hundreds of people in the immediate area - were obliterated. (...) Across Halifax, there were miraculous stories of survival. And equally, stories of tragedy. Many children were killed on their walk to school that morning, or blinded by flying glass. Those that survived the blast stumbled home, only to find their houses shattered, or their parents dead or wounded, among the wreckage. (...) Every year on 6 December, people gather above the Narrows to hear the ringing of the memorial's carillon bells, and to remember the victims of the disaster. www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/halifax-explosion

Piano Quartet - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1329920 Composed by James E. Andersson. 19th Century,21st Century,Classical,Comedy,Contemporary. 35 pages. Sahale Studios #917904. Published by Sahale Studios (A0.1329920). Once there was an oboist who was a member of a chamber ensemble consisting of flute, oboe, cello, and, piano. The oboist was highly skilled; a virtouoso who could ornament without the slighest effort. They were notorious for doing so.One day during dress rehearsal, the oboist, familiar enough with the music began ornamenting and adding stylistic flourishes, becoming increasingly carried away with their part. It finally reaches a point where the others stop playing and let the oboe go completely overboard with a full cadenza. Not far into the solo, the oboe realizes everyone else has stopped playing and stops themself and the rehearsal continues. However, not much farther along, the oboist becomes carried away in their part again, resulting in the other musicians pausing again as the oboist proceeds into another cadenza passage before realizing the others have stopped again. The rehearsal continues, and they all get further along (due to the oboe simply not playing), but when the oboe plays the melody, the ornaments and finesse return in full display, and finally the piano cuts the oboe off. At the slightest hint of an ornament all the other musicians in the ensmeble join in and cut off the oboe. From this, the oboist sinks into low spirits. The rehearsal continues unabated through the next section, and when the oboist enters, they play their part as written, but the ornamentations begin creeping in again. But rather than admonish the oboist the others instead speed the music up into the recapitulation section and for the remainder of the piece and rehearsal they all go wild with flourishes and ornamentations of their own, bringing the piece to a rollicking and lively conclusion.

String Orchestra - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522248 Composed by Colin Kirkpatrick. Concert,Holiday,Patriotic. Score and parts. 23 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #5017655. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522248). Call of the North is a movement from Colin Kirkpatrick's suite for elementary string orchestra entitled “Atlantic Highwayâ€. Ideal for end-of-semester concerts or any other school or college concert occasion, these tuneful and attractive pieces are bound to please audience and instrumentalists alike. The work is scored for Violins 1 and 2, Viola (with an identical but optional part for Vln 3 in treble clef), cello, double bass and piano (or digitial keyboard). The piano part is not merely an accompaniment but an integral part of music and therefore essential. However, the piano part is not especially difficult and perfectly manageable by the intermediate pianist. All the string parts can be played in first position and there are soli sections for vln 1, cello and double bass. Pizzicato is used extensively in the double bass part and is some of the passages for the upper strings. The piece is in D major with a central passage in G major and the time signature is 4/4 throughout. The string parts have been produced in fairly large type making them ideal for elementary players. Cues have been added where necessary.

Violin - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q47525 Twelve books of Studies revised, annotated and fingered by Mathieu Crickboom. Composed by Mathieu Crickboom. This edition: Sheet music. Schott Archive. Downloadable. Op. 8. Schott Music - Digital #Q47525. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q47525). These studies have been revised after the original editions. The author's indications of tempo or nuances are placed in parenthesis. Certain of these studies are preceded by examples demonstrating different ways of playing them. The professeur may choose amongst these the most appropriate for the work of each pupil, who should endeavour to produce in the study all the variety of tone possible. It is almost useless to say that the bowings, detached, martelé, smooth, staccato, may be executed in all parts of the bow, in employing a large of very small portion of it. Also only the most essential bowings are shown. It is quite evident that the metronomic movement indicated is at fault if the pupil executes the passage in a slower or more accelerated tempo, or again, with a different nuance. The pupil will remember also that if the little notes, dumb notes, are applied in the preparatory work, they must be perceptible only in the bar indicated by the expression of the melody. As an aid to expression, they should disappear entirely in the quick passages.

The pupil will remember also that if the little notes, dumb notes, are applied in the preparatory work, they must be perceptible only in the bar indicated by the expression of the melody. As an aid to expression, they should disappear entirely in the quick passages.

Instrumental Duet,Piano Flute,Instrumental Duet,Piano,Trombone - Digital Download SKU: A0.726101 Arranged by Traditional, Johann Cruger. Christian,Holiday,Sacred. Score and parts. 12 pages. Con Spirito Music #6077249. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726101). This arrangement for trombone, flute, and piano brings together two hymn tunes that are especially popular at the American holiday of Thanksgiving, but appropriate at any time of year. We gather together are the opening words to a poem written by the Dutch poet and composer Adrianus Valerius in 1597 to celebrate the Dutch victory in a long-standing dispute with Spain. 1878, the Austrian composer/conductor Edward Kremser arranged six Dutch folk songs for men's voices, including Prayer of Thanksgiving: Old Dutch Melody, with texts in German. In 1894, Theodore Baker (editor of Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians) translated the German text of Prayer of Thanksgiving into the familiar English version, We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing, that is sung today. Now Thank We All Our God is Catherine Winkworth's (1827-1878) translation of the German Nun Danket Alle Gott, written by Lutheran clergyman and hymn-writer Martin Rinckart (1586-1649). Rinckart's text, based on a passage from Ecclesiasticus, was set to a chorale tune by Johann Cruger (1598-1662) in his 1647 collection, Praxis pietatis melica (The Practice of Piety in Song), a hymnal for use in public worship and private devotions. Like We Gather Together, it is strongly associated the Thanksgiving holiday and other services of thanksgiving. Copyright 2015 Todd Marchand / www.ConSpiritoMusic.com

Tenor voice solo with string quartet or piano - Moderately Easy - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8329-E Composed by Gwyneth W. Walker. Instrument part. 23 pages. Duration 10 minutes, 10 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8329-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8329-E). English. The poetry of Dylan Thomas (1914–1953) is characteristically Welsh and dark. Death is a common topic in his writings. Yet despite the somber imagery, there is often a strength and resilience. The journey of death is described, but not taken. Death is the adversary, not the ruler. The Hand that Signed the Paper speaks of the often cruel and deadly power of a signed document- a document of taxation, of treaty or of counting casualties. The five fingers mark the dead, but do not soothe. “Hands have no tears to flow.†And Death Shall Have No Dominion expresses the triumph of the human spirit over death. “Though lovers be lost love shall not.†Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night represents the fight against death. “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.†The musical expression of these poems places the voice in the low (dark) range. Tempi are slow, and minor keys are prevalent. Only occasionally are major tonalities presented. These passages combine with particularly uplifting phrases such as “Though they sink through the sea, they shall rise again†and “Wild men, who caught and sang the sun in flight…†Near the end of the last song, the poet addresses his deceased father: “And you, my father, there on the sad height...†The voice stays on a constant pitch while the harmony lifts beneath (to the heights), in the Lydian (raised) mode. [One might hear the voice as “perched atop†the rising chords.] This is one of the most personal lines of Dylan Thomas' poetry. As the poet speaks to his father, the climax of the song comes with the rising phrases of “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.†The final chords are dissonant, marked “with determination and triumph.†Duration: 10:10.

Organ - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534661 Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. 20th Century,Concert,Halloween. Score. 16 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #5739561. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534661). Over the years 1908–16, Debussy had produced a viable scenario for Usher on his third attempt. But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself. In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

Piano,Viola - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1039822 Composed by David M. Sterrett. Classical,Contemporary,Sacred. Score and part. 49 pages. David Sterrett Music #644666. Published by David Sterrett Music (A0.1039822). This piece depicts the story of the Penitent Thief, one of the two other men who hung on a cross beside Jesus, as told in the Bible: One of the thieves who were hanged by Jesus was hurling abuse at him, saying, 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!' But the other answered, and rebuking him, said, 'Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? We indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.' And he was saying, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!' And Jesus said to him, 'Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.' (Luke 23:39-43) I initially set out to portray the scene from a narrative perspective. As I began composing and felt the story resonate more and more with my own spiritual experiences, I decided to shift the focus onto what I imagined the emotional and spiritual experiences of the Penitent Thief were during this brief but transformative interaction with Jesus right before death. While the passage does not describe his internal experience, I imagine that Jesus’ extension of kindness and mercy, along with the promise “Today you will be with me in Paradise,†profoundly impacted him. In composing this, I hoped to convey that transformative encounter. Ultimately, The Penitent Thief depicts an experience familiar to many Christians: that of a lost and broken soul discovering Jesus offers the truth and salvation they long for. To capture the element of dialog, I envisioned the Viola as the Penitent Thief and the Piano as Jesus. Each has a distinct theme/motif. On the cross, the Penitent Thief is consumed by shame, sorrow, and fear of death. His demeanor shifts between moments of quiet contemplation and visceral emotional outbursts. Facing imminent death, he yearns for redemption and truth. He looks at Jesus hanging next to him, blameless and holy. He feels admiration and praise and is overcome by penitence and humility. He calls out, half in desperation, half in worship: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom…†Jesus, moved by his penitence and belief, responds with kindness and mercy, extending salvation: Today you will be with me in Paradise.†The Penitent Thief imagines Paradise and hopes for this to hold true. His hope becomes briefly overshadowed by lingering doubt and fear. Silence falls. Then, as the hour of death arrives, the man reaches out again and clings to Jesus’ promise, this time with more desperation. His soul suddenly becomes filled with joy, finding the fulfillment of longing, bound with Christ, and knowing that he will soon be at rest in Paradise. At peace, the man gazes upward, gives his final sputtering breath, and his soul departs this world.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.926660 Composed by Michael A. Morizio. A Cappella,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 112 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588371. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926660). During the late spring of 2017, I began composing a new choral piece based on the 1 Timothy 3:16 text. I was studying Paul's first letter to Timothy at the time when this particular passage jumped out at me. Not only was it an efficient summary of the Gospel message, but it was also a textual grouping, or form, such as might be found in a traditional hymn. What I was reading were indeed lyrics to an actual 1st Century Hymn to Christ, the music of which has since been lost. I entitled my piece, Great is the Mystery. I composed the anthem for SATB (a cappella), and set it to the ESV translation of the scripture. Based on its context, I suspected the song would work great for Ascension Sunday. Our choir sang the piece beautifully, crescendoing at the finish to the words, Believed on in the world and taken up in glory! Later that spring, I played the piece for a dear friend of mine who is Pastor at Immanuel Church in Manchester, New Hampshire. What he told me was actually a bit stunning. He informed me that there were (at least) seven specific known Hymns to Christ written into the New Testament Scriptures, whose text is found among the writings of the apostles’ Paul and John. The 1 Timothy 3:16 verse that I had selected for my piece was indeed one of those texts. At that moment, Pastor Don and I made a pact. If he were to supply me with the literal Greek translations of the other six known Hymns to Christ, I would set out to compose brand new anthems for them all. A new musical collaboration had begun. With this short introduction serving as the genesis of my new song cycle, I offer you these new Seven Anthems to Christ based on the seven known ancient ‘Hymns to Christ' texts found in the New Testament.

Patriotic. 4 pages. Keith Terrett #802515. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1203942). The Japanese National Anthem arranged for Violin & Cello.Kimigayo (å›ãŒä»£, Japanese pronunciation: [kimiÉ¡ajo]; His Imperial Majesty's Reign) is the national anthem of Japan. The lyrics are from a waka poem written by an unnamed author in the Heian period (794–1185), and the current melody was chosen in 1880, replacing an unpopular melody composed by John William Fenton eleven years earlier. While the title Kimigayo is usually translated as His Imperial Majesty's Reign, no official translation of the title or lyrics has been established in law. From 1888 to 1945, Kimigayo served as the national anthem of the Empire of Japan. When the Empire was dissolved following its surrender at the end of World War II, the State of Japan succeeded it in 1945. This successor state was a parliamentary democracy, and the polity therefore changed from a system based on imperial sovereignty to one based on popular sovereignty. However, the U.S. occupation forces allowed Emperor Hirohito to retain the throne and Kimigayo remained the de facto national anthem. The passage of the Act on National Flag and Anthem in 1999 recognized it as the official national and imperial anthem.Original version: John William Fenton, 1869Current version: Yoshiisa Oku and Akimori Hayashi (arranged by Franz Eckert), 1880.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1472717 Composed by Michael Shaw. Celtic,Classical,Contest,Festival,Irish,Romantic Period. 85 pages. Michael Shaw #1050366. Published by Michael Shaw (A0.1472717). The Ruin is a captivating symphonic poem, inspired by the evocative text of English poet Walter de la Mare. This piece serves as a cross-curricular exploration, seamlessly integrating elements of literature, traditional music, and diverse musical techniques. At its core, The Ruin is a programmatic work, aiming to convey the vivid imagery and emotional depth of de la Mare's poetry. The poem itself reflects on the theme of nostalgia, contemplating the remnants of a once-great civilization now in ruins. Shaw masterfully translates these themes into music, using a rich palette of orchestral colors and textures to evoke the haunting beauty of the decaying structures and the passage of time.A unique feature of The Ruin is its incorporation of the traditional Irish reel King of the Fairies. This lively and energetic tune provides a stark and sudden contrast to the more somber and reflective opening of the piece, symbolizing an enduring spirit amidst the decay. In The Ruin, Michael Shaw has created a work that not only delights the senses but also provides rich educational insights into poetry, program music, Irish dances, non-standard percussion (cricket rasp), mixed-meter, motifs, and impressionistic music. Its blend of poetry, traditional music, and innovative compositional techniques makes it a valuable addition to the concert band repertoire and an excellent resource for educators.

Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.840485 Composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. Arranged by Ted R. Marcus. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic. Score and Parts. 93 pages. Ted R. Marcus #3368179. Published by Ted R. Marcus (A0.840485). The tonal palette of the modern concert band brings fresh color and variety to the complete second movement of Haydn's Surprise Symphony. The famous theme and one of the variations explore the subtle contrast between bassoon and English horn. The original repeats are opened up and scored differently, using contrasting colors and combinations of solo clarinet, solo flute, piccolo, and soprano saxophone. A repeated section first has a flute and oboe accompanied with clarinets, then a saxophone quartet on the repeat. One variation features a solo piccolo and bells. And a prominent pair of horns recalls the sound of Haydn's divertimenti for wind ensemble. Duration: approx. 6:00. Written for an adult community band, this challenging arrangement is appropriate for a university, college, or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. The bassoon, English horn, and soprano saxophone parts are all fully cued to allow rehearsal or performance in the absence of any or all of them. Two strong horn players are essential; but the third and fourth horn parts are easier, and cued in trombones and euphonium. The bassoon parts use the tenor clef and ascend to a high B-flat; the second bassoon has only one 8-measure high passage that doubles the horns and can be omitted if necessary. The alternate versions of both bassoon parts use only bass clef but are otherwise identical. All essential bassoon passages are cued in saxophone and bass clarinet parts.Instrumentation: Piccolo / Flute 1-2 / Oboe / English Horn / Clarinet 1-2-3 / Alto Clarinet / Bass Clarinet / Bassoon 1-2 (and alternate parts using only bass clef) / Soprano Saxophone / Alto Saxophone / Tenor Saxophone / Baritone Saxophone / Trumpet 1-2-3 / Horn 1-2-3-4 / Trombone 1-2-3 / Euphonium / Baritone T.C. / Tuba / String Bass / Percussion (snare drum, crash cymbals) / Mallets (xylophone, bells) / TimpaniPlease visit my Web site to explore more classics for adventurous concert bands.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.499760 Composed by S. G. Potts. 20th Century,Contemporary,Romantic Period,Standards. Score. 18 pages. S. G. Potts #3512109. Published by S. G. Potts (A0.499760). The Raymond Variations for Piano (Set 1), received its world premiere on 2nd December 2015 at the 1901 Arts Club London, performed by Lorraine Womack-Banning as part of a memorial tribute concert to her late husband Raymond Banning (former professor of pianoforte at Trinity College London). The Variations are based on the three Andantino themes which form a central part of the ‘Raymond Overture’ written in 1851 by French composer Ambroise Thomas: 1811-1896. There are nine piano variations in total; these include a mix of both full and short partial variations (including a very short declamatory two chord introductory variation). The variations are not numbered or set-apart in a conventional manner, rather they form part of a continuous whole, and are separated only by bridge passages and/or cadence points; they last a little under eight minutes in duration, and strongly exploit the passionate elements of Thomas’s themes. They have been written for the most part in an accessible tonal style (with a passing nod to Messrs. Beethoven and J.S. Bach) and are based predominately in the home key of D minor, but they do also take advantage of many 20th and 21st century harmonic techniques where deemed appropriate: e.g. added note chords; cluster chords; percussive chords, and melodic deflection. In particular, the interval of the major 7th and its enharmonic equivalent(s) (the most distinctive interval in the main andantino theme from the overture) is heard in various different guises throughout the variations: this includes its inversion the minor 2nd which has a very distinctive sharp dissonant quality. Much play is made of these intervals – to somewhat humorous effect in variation 8 (the joker in the pack) heard some three quarters into the set, here the dissonant interval is pounded out double forte before hastily leading into some boisterous cluster harmonic instability; then quietly begins variation 9 which duly brings the set to a close. Look out for the sting in the tail!

Instrumental Solo,Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1202307 Composed by Brandon Nelson. 20th Century,Chamber,Christian,Classical,Contemporary. Individual part. 11 pages. Brandon Nelson #800991. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.1202307). Dr. Brian Kauth assembled a consortium of saxophone players to commission me to write a piece in four movements, each to be for a different member of the saxophone family(soprano, alto, tenor, baritone). He chose the theme of the “four horsemen of the apocalypse†because, as he puts it, “the saxophone was long considered ‘the devil’s instrument’due to the seedy and sultry qualities associated with it.â€ProgramThe story of the Four Horsemen comes from the biblical Book of Revelation. Each of the Horsemen is said to represent events that are supposed to usher in the Apocalypse, the final battle between good and evil. As with many biblical passages, there are numerous interpretations of this account debated among theologians. Those that I’ve taken in thispiece are strictly based on my own aesthetic requirements and should not be construed as taking any particular sides in these spiritual debates. The Four Horsemen symbolize the evils to come before the end of the world. It is said that a quarter of the world’s population is to be wiped out by a combination of these ills. The Horsemen pave the way for the finalbattle, the final judgement, and the Second Coming. The account begins with the White Horsemen, symbolizing pestilence. Next comes the Red Horse, representing war. Then the Black Horse, bringing widespread famine, especially against the poor of the world. Finally, the Pallid Horse, the personification of Death, reaping his reward in the victims of the tribulations.Performance NoteEach movement is assigned a different member of the saxophone family. Ideally it should be performed as such. However, if you do not have access to all four saxes, you may perform the movements on the sax or saxesof your choosing. The movements are written such that they will sound satisfactory on any of the saxes.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.828227 Composed by John Hatton. Arranged by Paul Thurmond. 20th Century,Baroque,Christian,Sacred. Score. 7 pages. Paul Thurmond #4968929. Published by Paul Thurmond (A0.828227). Tune: DUKE STREETUse: Prelude, PostludeOne Sunday my church was singing Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun as the opening hymn. It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire. So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.
