Together, these illustrate a set of ideals focusing on love and humility, echoing the highest of Jesusâ€™ teachings on spirituality and compassion. Each also promises a future reward, and the themes appear to escalate from beginning to advancing levels of responsibility and spirituality as the Sermon progresses. By the end of the Sermon a recipient would have earned the reward to stand ceremonially in the presence of God, and to ultimately gain the greatest reward of living with Him in heaven. It is dedicated to Edward Elwyn Jones and theHarvard University Choir.The biblical books of Luke and Acts form a pair of documents from a single author and with a single audience (thelikely-metaphorical â€œTheophilusâ€), yet they are unusual for being composed in such contrasting genres. Lukeâ€™sgospel, using Mark as a primary source throughout, features a comparable literary style to that of the otherevangelists. The astounding account of Pentecost follows:here, words from the book of Ruth, customarily read on the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), are included, telling thestory of a Moabite woman who converted to the Israelite faithâ€”a parallel to the expansion of the Christian messageto all nations by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Prayer for Boldness, quoting Psalm 2, asks God for protection fromthe threats of persecution that the apostles will now face.Stephen, regarded as the proto-martyr of the Christian Church, offers one of the most developed speeches in Acts,only a small portion of which is presented here. Itâ€™s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what Iâ€™m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16â€² pedal reed and went to town.I donâ€™t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while Iâ€™m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but thereâ€™s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: Itâ€™s going okay. Itâ€™s going okay. Itâ€™s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when weâ€™re done. My page turner appears to be on fire.So: Weâ€™re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Whereâ€™er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. Iâ€™m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. Itâ€™s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. Itâ€™s overused at weddings, but itâ€™s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While thatâ€™s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didnâ€™t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes itâ€™s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

One Sunday at the sermon a brother was praying and I was inspired by his word when he that the atoning sacrifice may not be wasted while pleading for forgiveness of our sins. It took me around 4 months to complete the work for the lyrics that was 2015 but the melody came a little bit earlier than that in 2010. I found the Emily Dickinson poem in early 2014 while searching for inspirational texts. After the first read, I knew I would like to set it to music someday. Later that summer I came across a composition contest that was looking for a piece about success/belief/hope. I started putting music to the text in late September. In October my mother was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer and she passed away a few days before Thanksgiving. Her passing affected me in ways I never expected. Music went from being the thing in which I could find solace, to the thing that reminded me of my mother's absence. I found myself unable to write my own music for quite some time. During the Lenten season of 2015, one of the Pastors at the church for which I work gave a sermon using this text. The sermon was particularly moving and I decided it was time to revisit the piece. The music was finished within 1 week. Just as my mother had done for me countless times, writing this piece gave me the hope and inspiration I needed to get through a difficult time in my life. I dedicate this work to my mother, Cynthia Marie Richards.

Sweetly Sang the Donkey is a sermon song from the Palm Sunday SermonÂ 2024 of Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church Fort Myers Florida.Â The text is found in each of the four gospels, but on this day the sermon was from Mark 11:1-11 and the donkey was stressed.Â In my mind, I thought of the children's song Sweetly Sings the Donkey and I extended it with bits of The Eentsy Weentsy Spider.Â Of course it had to be in the key of Dmajor,Â The bass provided consists of only two chords: Dmajor and Amajor7.Â It tells the story of the procession on Palm Sunday andÂ like Balaam's donkey, the doneky carrying Jesus is given the gift of speaking. It contrasts the crowds that on Sunday wave Palms branches andÂ later in the week wave their fists demanding the crucifiction of Jesus.Â It brings in the interesting note that Solomon, son of David, also rode a donkey.Â This is a fun children's choir song with a very deep message.

I used that tune to produce unison singing for a congregation with a stirring piano accompaniment.
