String Orchestra - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by trad. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century, European, Patriotic. Score, Set of Parts. 10 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Londonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. Make Room For Daddy).<br> <br> "Danny Boy" was used to represent Northern Ireland at the start of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, sung by a choir of children on the Giant’s Causeway.<br> <br> On November 25, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks used the song in honor of the recently deceased Pat Quinn, who played and worked in many executive capacities for the team.<br> <br> There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy". Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora.<br> <br> The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherly’s intent.<br> <br> Why the name Londonderry Air? Londonderry and Derry refer to the same place, a city in the north of Ireland, and also to the surrounding county. Supposedly the city of Derry was founded by St. Colmcille, although archaeological evidence shows that people were living there thousands of years earlier. There is an excellent museum in the city, which is worth a visit if you want to find out more. The name of the city was actually "Doire", corrupted to "Derry" by people who can’t pronounce Irish. It thought to derive from an Irish root meaning "oak tree".<br> <br> Moving quickly along in history, about a millenium later the government of England was having a difficult time colonizing Ireland because of the fierce and warlike clans living there, especially in the north of the country, Ulster. The monarchs of England, almost all of whom were notorious cheapskates, were continually looking about for ingenious ways to conquer places without actually having to put up the money themselves, or run the risk of unpopularity if they lost. In the case of Ireland, some of these schemes of the "Brish gummit" (as it is termed nowadays in Ulster) are still producing unfortunate long-term consequences.<br> <br> In 1608, King James I gave the city of Derry to the City of London corporation. I guess the deal could be summed up by saying that if the City of London could figure out a way to chase all the inhabitants out of Derry, they would be allowed to keep the loot, minus a percentage for the King of course. If they lost, well too bad. In celebration of this historic agreement, the name of Derry was officially changed to Londonderry. (For further information, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s History of Derry.)<br> <br> The linguistic outcome of all this today is that, if you think that King James’s deal with the City of London was a good idea, you call both the city and county "Londonderry". If you do, you are probably a supporter of the Unionist movement that seeks to keep Ulster a part of the United Kingdom. If you think it was a bad idea, you call both "Derry", and you are probably a supporter of the Irish Nationalist cause. Or you might just be someone who thinks it’s confusing for kings to be going around changing the names of places all the time for no good reason.<br> <br> You can find plenty of discussion about the political side of the question elsewhere, but here let’s look at the musical side. We have an air, collected in county Derry/Londonderry, and it doesn’t have a title. What do we call it?<br> <br> If you were a proper Victorian, there’s no way you were going to call it the Londonderry Air, much less the Derry Air, because of the improper sentiments that these titles might suggest. My parents tell me that in their youth in Australia, it was usually called the Air from County Derry. (This would, I suppose, support Winston Churchill’s theory that Australia was inhabited by "convicts and Irishmen".)<br> <br> My mother also sends the following information, referring to an arrangement of the tune by the Australian composer Percy Grainger:<br> <br> Just another note about Danny Boy, that I grew up in Australia believing to be the Air from County Derry. We were looking through some LP’s last night (back to vinyl yet!) and found a Mercury Wing Classical Favorites stereo LP SRW18060, COUNTRY GARDENS and other favorites by Percy Grainger {played by} Eastman-Rochester Pops, Frederick Fennell, conducting. The cover notes included the following: "Irish Tune from County Derry was harmonised in memory of Irish childhood friends in Australia." Considered by many to be Grainger’s masterpiece of harmonization, the tune was collected many years ago by Miss Jane Ross of New Town, Limavady, Ireland. Grainger has set it for many instrumental combinations. So there’s another variant on the name for it. It doesn’t say who wrote the notes, but the bits in quotes for each of the works on the record are Grainger’s original comments.<br> <br> The references to Londonderry Air that I’ve seen don’t go back any earlier than the late 1930s. For example, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) in February 1940. Bing Crosby’s version was recorded in July 1941 (reference). (So many different things I could check up on!) Londonderry was an important American naval base during WWII, but the US hadn’t come into the war in 1940.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? They are ALL in my store! All my anthem arrangements are also available for Orchestra, Recorders, Saxophones, Wind, Brass and Flexible band. If you need an anthem urgently for an instrumentation not in my store, let me know via e-mail, and I will arrange it for you FOC if possible! keithterrett@gmail.com<br> <br> Contact Publisher Related Scores

Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522333 Composed by Unknown - traditional. Arranged by Paul A. Jorg. Christian,Spiritual,Traditional. Octavo. 4 pages. Paul A. Jorg #5869331. Published by Paul A. Jorg (A0.522333). This song is public domain, written in the 1850's, during a time - pre-civil war - when the nation was being torn apart. The writer calms his anxiety by holding on to God's promises. Here are some lyric notes: I am a poor, wayfaring stranger - Wayfaring: traveling especially on foot; peripatetic country preachers; a poor wayfaring stranger. Wandering through this world of woe - Matthew 18:7: Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come! And there's no sickness, toil or danger - John 11:4: When he heard this, Jesus said, This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it. Ecclesiastes 2:18-19: I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. Acts 14:22: strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God, In that bright land to which I go - James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.I'm going home to see my Father - John 6:40 - For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. I'm only going over Jordan - Joshua 22:4: Now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as he promised, return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan. Yet though dark clouds will gather round me - 2 Corinthians 12:10: That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. I know my way is rough and steep - Psalm 16:11: You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Proverbs 15:24: The path of life leads upward for the wise to keep him from going down to the grave. But beauteous fields lie just before me - Numbers 13:25: We arrived in the land you sent us to see, and it is indeed a magnificient country, a land flowing with milk and honey. Where God's redeemed their vigil's keep - Exodus12:42: Because the LORD kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the LORD for the generations to come. I'm going home to see my mother - Mark 10:29-31: I tell you the truth, Jesus replied, no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields-and with them, persecutions.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.973001 Composed by Steve Martin, Rainy Night Music. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards. Individual part. 2 pages. Steve Martin, Rainy Night Music #6436875. Published by Steve Martin, Rainy Night Music (A0.973001). This piece is evocative of those really chilled summer nights when the sun is going down, and you're reflecting on the day. It's composed specifically for classical guitar with a standard EADGBE tuning. The piece is approximately Grade 5 to 6 in standard (ABRSM), with plenty of barré and half-barré passages providing the technical challenge. As a gentle piece, it would work particularly well paired with Holly's Lullaby, another of my classical guitar compositions. Thank you for your interest in my music, and I hope you enjoy playing it - especially on those balmy summer evenings! .

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.828227 Composed by John Hatton. Arranged by Paul Thurmond. 20th Century,Baroque,Christian,Sacred. Score. 7 pages. Paul Thurmond #4968929. Published by Paul Thurmond (A0.828227). Tune: DUKE STREETUse: Prelude, PostludeOne Sunday my church was singing Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun as the opening hymn. It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire. So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

Mood: Serious, reflective, sad, emotionally moving. Musical Traits: Simple left hand piano, right hand reflects vocal part. Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 8, and started composing shortly thereafter.Stevens approaches her compositions as an artist. She paints musical portraits of the things that bring meaning to life: relationship to living things, emotional healing, discovering what matters most and honoring that as best we are able. Stevens' beautiful piano-based music aligns one with their own heart. Although some of her music can be described as New Age, her roots are heavily based in classical and jazz. Her study of classical composition makes her music more complex than some New Age music. Her music has been likened to the impressionistic composers such as Claude Debussy. Sydney's formal training is also reflected in her ability to compose for orchestral instruments. Her latest release, Cycles of Life, was solely recorded and produced by Sydney, programming all of the virtual instruments.Sydney has a great love for jazz. Keith Jarrett was an influence on her with his innovative and improvisational piano recordings and performances. She was particularly impressed with the freedom of style he portrayed in his performances. Bill Evans was something Sydney heard played as a young child. Where her mother was a classical pianist, her father was a jazz pianist. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. Listening to her music is like taking a journey. She delves into depths of emotion, often taking the listener to places that can be difficult to go without the comfort of a beautiful song to accompany them.In addition to being a prolific.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1008264 Composed by William Brenner. Contemporary. Score and parts. 80 pages. William Brenner #5370501. Published by William Brenner (A0.1008264). Halifax was devastated on 6 December 1917 when two ships collided in the city's harbour, one of them a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945.(...)In early December, one of the merchant ships in port was the large, Norwegian vessel Imo, en route from Halifax to New York to pick up relief supplies (...) Another was the French munitions ship Mont-Blanc - filled with tons of benzol, the high explosive picric acid, TNT and gun cotton - arriving in Halifax to join a convoy across the ocean.(...)The Imo was departing the harbour on the morning of 6 December 1917 (...) Imo had an experienced, local harbour pilot on board, William Hayes, who knew the navigation rules of the harbour. However, earlier encounters that morning with two inbound vessels moving towards Bedford Basin - both of which Imo had passed starboard-to-starboard - resulted in the unusual position that Imo now occupied, too far to the east (...) The Mont-Blanc had arrived outside Halifax the previous day and anchored overnight at the mouth of the harbour. On the morning of 6 December, the ship was cleared by harbour authorities to proceed toward Bedford Basin. Despite the Mont-Blanc's dangerous cargo, there was no special protocol for the passage of munitions ships in the harbour. Other ships such as the Imo were not ordered to hold their positions that morning until the Mont-Blanc had made safe passage through the port. Francis Mackey, Mont-Blanc's pilot, was guiding the ship inbound on the Dartmouth-side of the Narrows, when he encountered the Imo heading straight towards him in what he believed was Mont-Blanc's lane. Mackey would later maintain that the Imo was moving at an unsafe speed for such a large, unwieldly ship in the harbour, and also that incoming ships (in this case Mont-Blanc) had the right-of-way over outgoing vessels. Regardless of the accuracy of those claims, what is certain is that the Imo was sailing too far to the east, in what should have been Mont-Blanc's path. After a series of whistles and miscommunications between the officers and pilots on the two ships, and failed manoeuvres to avoid a collision, the Imo struck the starboard bow of the Mont-Blanc. After a few moments the two ships parted, leaving a gash in Mont-Blanc's hull and generating sparks that ignited volatile grains of dry picric acid, stored below its decks. (...) The Mont-Blanc exploded at 9:04:35 a.m., sending out a shock wave in all directions, followed by a tsunami that washed violently over the Halifax and Dartmouth shores. More than 2.5 square km of Richmond were totally levelled, either by the blast, the tsunami, or the structure fires caused when buildings collapsed inward on lanterns, stoves and furnaces.Homes, offices, churches, factories, vessels (including the Mont-Blanc), the railway station and freight yards - and hundreds of people in the immediate area - were obliterated. (...) Across Halifax, there were miraculous stories of survival. And equally, stories of tragedy. Many children were killed on their walk to school that morning, or blinded by flying glass. Those that survived the blast stumbled home, only to find their houses shattered, or their parents dead or wounded, among the wreckage. (...) Every year on 6 December, people gather above the Narrows to hear the ringing of the memorial's carillon bells, and to remember the victims of the disaster. www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/halifax-explosion

Goodridge & Huvon Music Publishing #3530023. Published by Goodridge & Huvon Music Publishing (A0.889173). This is a song for the solo voice or for congregational singing. It's a song showing the setting sun bringing in God's holy Sabbath on a Friday evening. The atmosphere is being set for worship with the sun going down. If the angels were to come to my house on a Friday evening, will they find me at Sabbath worship or will they pass me by. This is a personal thought.

By Ryan Terry. 21st Century,Chamber,Christian,Contemporary,Religious. 14 pages. Ryan Terry #1020051. Published by Ryan Terry (A0.1440107). An original piece by composer and clarinetist Ryan Terry. This unstable, suspenseful work details the the prophesied disastrous signs that will precede Christ's Second Coming through the use of asymetrical time signatures, whereas Christ's depicted descent from the heavens is the only part of the piece in 4/4, arguably the most comforting time signature. In fact, the title, Signs of the Times, is actually a play on words of the term time signatures, which is the main gimmick of the piece. The subtitle of the piece is (Matthew 24:29-30) which reads:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. This piece was originally performed by the Wind Quintet at Brigham Young University-Idaho during the Fall 2023 semester, and has since been polished.Estimated duration of piece: 5 min, 55 secondsEmail me for the sheet music for the individual parts, or let me know if you're going to perform this piece!ryansterry2000@gmail.com.

Choral Choir (SAB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1120365 By Philip Le Bas. By J-B Lully / G Bizet. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. Christmas,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. Octavo. 8 pages. Philip Le Bas #721616. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1120365). A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

This is a beautiful, tender and heartfelt, finger-style guitar solo (ballad), exactly as performed by The Candlelight Guitarist on the album "Sunflower Serenity." As with other Candlelight Guitarist pieces, it seamlessly blends romantic popular, folk, classical and jazz styles. Written in both standard notation and TAB, it's for a strong intermediate level finger-style player (budding-into-more advanced), comfortable playing up to 12th position, with capable finger-style abilities (either classical or strong folk technique). String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1489376 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #1066238. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1489376). Carol of the Bells is a well-known Christmas carol with a rich history rooted in Ukrainian culture. Here are the key points to understand about this iconic piece:Original Composition: The melody of Carol of the Bells is derived from a Ukrainian folk song called Shchedryk, which Mykola Leontovych composed in 1914. Shchedryk, which translates to The Little Swallow, was originally a New Year's song celebrating the arrival of spring and good fortune.Cultural Context: The song's origins are tied to Ukrainian traditions, where it was sung by young girls going door-to-door on New Year's Eve, wishing families prosperity and good luck for the coming year. The swallow in the song symbolizes the arrival of spring and abundance.English Lyrics: In 1936, American composer Peter Wilhousky adapted the melody for Christmas, writing new lyrics that emphasized bells and Christmas cheer themes. This version transformed Shchedryk into Carol of the Bells, quickly gaining popularity in the United States and becoming a staple of Christmas music.Musical Structure: The carol features a distinctive four-note ostinato and is metrically bistable, allowing listeners to perceive the rhythm differently. It is typically arranged in 3/4 time and has a lively and festive feel, contributing to its widespread appeal.Widespread Adaptations: Carol of the Bells has been recorded in over 150 versions across various musical genres, including classical, jazz, rock, and heavy metal. Notable adaptations include those by Mannheim Steamroller and John Williams, which have helped to cement its status as a Christmas classic.Cultural Significance: The song's association with Christmas has overshadowed its Ukrainian roots, leading to a complex relationship with its cultural identity. In recent years, there has been a movement to reclaim Shchedryk as a significant part of Ukrainian heritage, especially amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.Modern Recognition: The song is frequently featured in films, television shows, and holiday concerts, making it a beloved part of the Christmas season. Its ability to evoke joy and nostalgia resonates with audiences worldwide. In summary, Carol of the Bells is not just a Christmas carol but a piece with deep cultural roots and a fascinating history of transformation from a Ukrainian folk song to a global holiday favorite.

The song was released as a single in 1971, becoming a breakthrough hit for Withers, reaching number six on the U.S. R&B Chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Withers was inspired to write the song after watching the 1962 movie Days of Wine and Roses. He explained, in reference to the characters played by Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon, They were both alcoholics who were alternately weak and strong. It's like going back for seconds on rat poison. Sometimes you miss things that weren't particularly good for you. It's just something that crossed my mind from watching that movie, and probably something else that happened in my life that I'm not aware of. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719728 Composed by Various. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Sacred. Octavo. 11 pages. Curtis Hanson #4573003. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719728). As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include This Is My Father's World, I Love to Tell the Story, and Faith of Our Fathers.
