War, by its nature, claims the lives of those who enter it, and over the course of history, many have fallen in the service of their countries who have gone to war for one reason or another. Fanfare for the Fallen seeks to honor those who have fallen in service and conjure the image of them marching into their glorious afterlife. Christianity holds that there is no greater love than laying down one's life for another, and many cultures believe that dying in battle yields glory in the great beyond. So whether marching into heaven, Valhalla or some other bright light at the end of the tunnel, let this music provide the soundtrack of trumpeting angels and one last ticker tape parade as these warriors are welcomed into their eternal home.This is a piece of intermediate difficulty with a nice melody and a John Williams' Olympic Fanfare feel to it. While the trumpets soar in their high registers for the heralding sections, the range for the rest of the piece (and the rest of the band) stays mostly in the center of the instruments. While 32nd notes are found here and there, the tempo sitting at around 80 keeps their difficulty, as well as the 16th note woodwind runs, in check. George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.Mp3 provided is a midi extracted from the composition program.

Programme Notes Boudicca became the Queen of the Iceni upon the death of her husband, Prasutagus. The Iceni had lived in relative peace with the Romans, with Prasutagus living as a client king, paying tribute to Rome. The Romans refused to accept a woman as the ruler, and sought to assume total control. To demonstrate its superiority, a Roman Legion attacked the Iceni, captured Boudicca and made her watch as her daughters were raped. She sought revenge, allying the Iceni with the Trinovantes under her command, and wreaked havoc, destroying many Roman settlements. Boudicca was only stopped when Rome sent one of the best generals of the time, Seutonius Paulinus. Seutonius has been depicted offering Boudicca surrender with honour and her life, but when she rejected this, his tactical acumen proved superior, and all the Iceni and Trinovantes were wiped out. 1 – Boudicca Unites the Tribes The piece opens with the initial statement of Boudicca’s theme. Figure 3 depicts Boudicca’s reign as the leader of the Iceni, interspersed with a sadder theme depicting her lonely widowhood. Figure 4 sees the tribes called together with a drinking song and Figure 5 is the war cry, as Boudicca gives a rousing speech, first to her own warriors then to the Trinovantes. The second time bar before Figure 7 sees the tribes fall into a restless sleep. Amid early morning mists, Figure 7 sees restless horses, with distant fanfares heard, signalling the coming of the Romans. The Romans main theme is at Figure 8, with a constant fanfare over the top, signalling the confidence of the leaders. Figure 10 sees the Iceni and Trinovantes coming slowly out of hiding, and Boudicca’s theme growing in volume until the death chords signify the tribes have prevailed. 2. The Bards Sing The tribes sing a hymn to an unnamed Pagan God. At Figure 13, the Euphonium develops Boudicca’s theme depicting Taranis, the Bard of the Iceni, singing wistfully of happier times. He then makes an impassioned speech for peace, before cutting off in mid sentence. He then sits quietly (Figure 16) fearing the future. Figure 17 gives a euphoric and hopeful rendition of the hymn, as if Taranis has not been heard. 3 – Epping NB: It is my piece, and I say Epping is as credible as anywhere as the site of the final battle, and will not enter into any correspondence on the matter! A fanfare awakens the two tribes. Figure 18 sees the tribes prepare for a final battle, and the repeated section depicts two victories at Verulanium (St Albans) and Londinium (London – then a small barracks). At Figure 20 Taranis has a vision, and tries to change Boudicca’s mind about another attack. Boudicca listens to him, but tells him the die is cast, and there is no going back. Death or Glory… The war cry ensues at Figure 21, but at Figure 22 it is the Romans’ theme heard, and the death chords (Figure 24) signify that it is the two tribes that are being slaughtered this time. Brave souls (Repiano and Flugel at 24) fight on in vain to allow Boudicca to escape. At Figure 25 Boudicca prays, but realising all is lost, at Figure 26 drinks poison. As she dies, the last thing this brave British heroine hears is the sound of the Roman’s theme, signifying Seutonius’ total victory. William Elsom, December 2004

Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862537). Darius Milhaud was NOT a member of the insider's group of Old Guard French composers, epitomized by Debussy and Ravel. Ravel had usupred Debussy's place as the pre-eminent modernist, and he rightly understood it was the duty of the next generation to rebel against his own work, and find their own ways and voices. Hence, Les Six was formed to accomplish this, just as Ravel's Les Apaches, ( not a Native American meaning, but a general reference to being musical warriors) had, by turns, admired, undermined, and then surpassed Debussy. The music here uses Milhaud's best-known contribution to modernity, bi-tonality. It takes the form of arpeggiated augmented major 7th chords played against each other: as the relationship between the chords comes to the tritone, each iteration slows down, but only to De-Emphasize the stark contrast, rather than bring it out. A second section uses mirrored, symmetrical patterns in each hand. The finale concludes with plain triads juxtaposed in a bi-tonal fashion, with the same contrary motion towards the tritone using a ritard and diminuendo. Approx. running time is 4 mins 30 secs. Easy to play, easy to read, not as easy to hear! Pedaling is fully indicated throughout. Debussy never used bi-tonality, and Ravel hinted at it a few times, but it was Milhaud's stock-in-trade. His work on 'Prince Igor' begun after the world premiere of Symphony No. 1 finished in favour of the second symphony, but part of the musical material found its way into the new composition, and even the extant programme testifies to the critical analysis of the music theatre: the gathering of Russian warriors in the first movement, the Old Slavonic bard in the andante, and the party scene to the sounds of the gusli in the finale.

It is part of his Op. 52, a collection of seven songs inspired by Walter Scott's 1810 narrative poem The Lady of the Lake, which was loosely translated into German.This piece is among Schubert's most beloved works. Although it was originally composed as a song, it is frequently performed and recorded under the title Ave Maria. This title references the Latin name of the prayer Hail Mary, which is also the opening phrase and refrain of Ellen's song—a prayer to the Virgin Mary. Performances often feature simplified musical arrangements and various lyrics that deviate from the original poem. Franz Liszt arranged the piece in three versions for piano.Schubert's composition is based on verse XXIX from Canto Three of Scott's poem, translated into German by Adam Storck (1780–1822).
