Woodwind Ensemble Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813829 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Contemporary,Folk,Romantic Period,Standards. 18 pages. Regis Bookshar #6533919. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813829). Largo (from Symphony No. 9 in E minor) (From the New World) (Db) (Flute Quintet) - Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (18 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour. In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners. The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to this version for a Flute Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection which are readily available for a wide variety of instrumental.

Woodwind Ensemble Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.722825 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Jari A. Villanueva. 20th Century,Folk,Holiday,Patriotic,Romantic Period. 12 pages. JV MUSIC #6382581. Published by JV MUSIC (A0.722825). Goin' Home, is based on the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's famous Largo theme from his Symphony No. 9 (5) (From the New World), Op. 95. His symphony was composed while he was in America and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. It has been said that Dvorak's themes in his symphony were inspired by American folk melodies, especially Afro-American or American Indian. But his themes are just as similar to Bohemian folk music and most likely from that music. This arrangement is based on the one played in the movie Clear and Present Danger by the United States Air Force Band. It has been used at presidential funerals for the departure ceremonies at Andrews Air Force Base for Presidents Reagan and Ford and was used in 1998 for the dis-interment ceremony for the Vietnam Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery. It is still used today by military bands at Arlington.Arranged for 6 Flutes and Alto Flute

She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since. The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Trio Flute - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971663 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary. 49 pages. Musicart Publications #5992083. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971663). Beyond the Sky. Flute trio (1st doubling piccolo and 3rd doubling alto flute). Duration, 13 minutes.1. Black Hole (3 min. 45 sec.)2. A Crescent Moon, 1969 (3 min. 45 sec.)3. SETI Ratio (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) (2 min.)4. Quantum Waltz (3 min. 30 sec.)The score and parts in this edition are arranged to be printed double-sided, with correct page turns.Beyond the Sky is a celebration of space exploration and imagination. It is in many respects a symphonic work for flute trio, with the characteristics and order of the four movements resembling the structure of a classical symphony. As a child during the Space Race, I was immensely interested in both terrestrial- and extraterrestrial-exploration, and as I composed this music a half-century later it made the most sense to set the musical ideas in this manner. In the first movement, Black Hole, two contrasting themes are presented and immediately developed: a theme of polyphonic gestures, with a contrasting second theme of chordal-textured music. The characteristic and somewhat liquid sound of the flute trio in the second theme is especially evident. The static and evolving blocks of music represent the gravitational collection of matter by a black hole. The second movement, A Crescent Moon, 1969, celebrates astronaut Neil Armstrong's moonwalk in July 1969. This slow, lyrical movement possesses a nocturnal quality while features the alto flute as a solo instrument. The third movement, SETI Radio (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), is a slow through-composed scherzo. With piccolo, a high tessitura of the flute trio range is heard. The fourth movement is a dynamic Rondo Variations form. Quantum Waltz is just that, a small waltz where the music is developed with a recurring first section, alternating between new material.– Jeffrey HooverJeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the Universal Edition/SMP Press Contemporary Composition Award, the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as an M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments. Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.787233 Composed by Greg Bartholomew. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Standards. 11 pages. Burke & Bagley #48413. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787233). The Second Suite from Razumov derives from the second act of Razumov, Greg Bartholomew’s chamber opera based on the novel Under Western Eyes by Joseph Conrad. The opera tells the story of a young Russian, Razumov, who is caught up in the consequences when a fellow university student, Victor Haldin, assassinates a government minister. Themes for Part 1 are taken from the opening scene of Act Two, in which Haldin’s mother, in exile in Geneva and worried by the lack of news from her son, learns that Victor was the assassin and has now been caught and executed. Part 2 is an instrumental interlude. Part 3 is based on the scene in which Razumov is urged to visit Mrs. Haldin, an encounter Razumov dreads because it was he who informed on Haldin to the government. The final Part corresponds to the scene in which Razumov learns that news received from Russia has released him from suspicion for Haldin’s death by placing responsibility on an innocent man. The Suite was commissioned by a consortium of ensembles led by the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh, who presented the world premiere performance on November 9, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787231). I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1404653 Composed by Terry Vosbein. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical. 102 pages. Max Frank Music #987719. Published by Max Frank Music (A0.1404653). Experience the hauntingly beautiful Vonnegut Trilogy, a three movement suite for woodwind quintet composed to celebrate the centennial of acclaimed author Kurt Vonnegut. This captivating and thought-provoking piece captures the essence of Vonnegut's literary works through quirky arrangements and evocative melodies. Dive into the world of Vonnegut and let the music transport you to new and inspiring heights.Player Piano was Vonnegut’s first published novel and serves as the fist movement to this trilogy. The music begins with the sounds of a well-oiled-machine, with carefully played melodies interacting in classical synchronicity. But throughout there are interruptions by the unrest and displeasure that surrounds the harmonious flow.Who Am I This Time? is a short story from Vonnegut’s 1961 collection entitled Welcome to the Monkey House. It is a beautiful, yet quirky, love story. This movement explores a multitude of duets, symbolizing the two main characters as they maneuver through their courtship. It is a slow dance. In one of the few literal musical depictions in this suite, the questioning final chord represents both the title, and the last line of the story. The third movement is inspired by Breakfast of Champions, a 1973 novel that explores a mul- titude of themes through the eyes and actions of a prosperous midwestern car salesman and an obscure science fiction writer. The music is off and running from the start with a rhythmic them that reappears and connects the various diversions.

Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1225840 By Rainer Fabich Orchestra. By Rainer Fabich. Arranged by Rainer Fabich. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary,Film/TV. Score and Parts. 212 pages. Fajora Music #821876. Published by Fajora Music (A0.1225840). RAGING FURIES - Rasende FurienGoddesses of revenge - Göttinnenn der RageConcert Piece for big orchestra - Score and PartsThe image of the raging furies as a topos has permeated the world of thoughts and images of mankind for thousands of years and has inspired and fascinated countless artists. This idea is also based on an emotional background, a violent, uncontrolled emotional outburst, a rage (Latin: furor, in the sense of frenzy, passion and madness, French: rage). The resulting affect action is described as rage or fury, combined with a state of mind of uncontrolled excitement in the sense of being beside oneself or out of one's senses. The personification of these affects was in Greek and Roman mythology with the trio of vengeance goddesses, the Erinyens (Latin furia) called: Alekto (the incessant, the never resting), Megaira (German: Megäre, the envious anger) and Tisiphone (the Vengeance avenging the murder, represented with a dog's head and bat's wings), and another, that of Nemesis (the reconciling justice). Already in antiquity they were depicted in sculptures, embossed on coins or immortalized as images on amphorae. They appear in all eras of fine arts, sometimes in female, male or androgynous form, e.g. as avenging angels, or as hybrid beings between humans and animals. Pictures by Albrecht Dürer, Hieronymus Bosch, Tizian, Peter Paul Rubens, William Hamilton, Johann Heinrich Fuessli, Franz von Stuck, Alfred Kubin, Salvador Dali, Francis Bacon, Yongbo Zhao and many others are proof of this. They found their way into the literature of Virgil (Aeneis), Dante (Divine Comedy) or John Milton (Paradise Lost). Goethe lets them appear in Faust II, Schiller (Die Kraniche des Ibykus) and many others refer to them directly or in a modified form, such as Kurt Tucholsky (Gripsholm Palace), Alfred Döblin (Berlin Alexanderplatz), Max Frisch (Homo Faber) or Jean-Paul Sartre (The Flies). In opera, they become an important element in highly dramatic scenes, especially on themes with a mythological or historical background, often also related to the underworld, as in Monteverdi (Il Ritorno d`Ulisse in Patria), Lully (Armide), Gluck (Orpheus and Euridice) or Purcell (Dido and Aeneas). Haendel dedicates an aria to them in Rinaldo, the Furie Terribili. Mozart also uses it in The Magic Flute, in his aria Der Hölle Rache by the Queen of the Night.Furies appear up to the present in various forms, in comics, fantasy novels, computer games, or kung fu films of the 70s (Furies on the yellow river). They are even popular as plastic children's toys, mostly in particularly frightening and creepy presentations (Matchbox/Fighting Furies or Warhammer/Erinnye). This remarkable history and reception inspired Rainer Fabich to create this new orchestral work from his MYThS series. PEGASUS - Ride on Wings, ULYSSES - Prélude to an Odyssey and THE AMONZS - Myth and Projection have already been released. As the title suggests, this is frantically wild music (Allegro molto vivace) that seems to run away, like an action film with fast motives and runs of strings and woodwinds, combined with strong accents of brass and massive percussion Set. Alternations of straight and asymmetrical beats illustrate erratic sequences of movement, as are typical of scenes with the highest intensity, especially in films (e.g. a chase). In the jazzy middle section, the furies calm down a little, before they pick up speed again in a bombastic third section and increase to the point of ecstasy.

Bill’s mom Priscilla Alden Taylor (nee Rowe) passed on at age 90 in January, 2010. This piece was one she loved, but the words did not come until 2 months after her death and 2 days before Jaye and I were to perform Mom’s song Every Time We Meet at the Anderson Valley Variety Show. We sung it as best we could with so little practice time and in a key way too high. This version is transposed down a fifth. Listeners with parents who have gone on, and those who haven’t, may find some familiar themes here. If inspired, support your local elder and/or hospice organizations. I love my children to be happy. What’s new with you Mom? Charlotte’s got a bakery. Hannah is teaching, playing in San Jose. Tom and Jeanne expecting, he’s flying a new plane. Lucy’s kids are doing well, I’m seeing Uncle Jay. My life is going on in a most pleasant way. When are you coming here to visit, it’s been way too long? When we were children everything was made into a song. Father’s jazzy flute, brother’s boogie woogie She left Julliard to help her family Factory in the war, music she wrote A job at Schirmers she met my Dad had 5 kids Trips to Vermont and Jersey and New York Kept house, school lunch, kind words, praising Now she is running and swimming Dancing and flying, she’s singing All new adventures, new worlds to learn and know Earth body left behind, all life is love and flow Walker made her so tired, shuffling oh so slow She learned to ask for help from all of us below Gathered her children all around her at her time to go Now she’s with her God.

Instrumental Duet,Piano Flute,Instrumental Duet,Oboe,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.837511 Composed by Brett L. Wery. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 56 pages. Sonata Grendel Publishing #6599293. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837511). An Avaloch Divertimento was begun-in fact the first two movements were completed-at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in New Hampshire. Avaloch or Abhlach, is from the old Irish word meaning, place of the apple trees. The sacred Isle of the Apple Trees, Avalon-where Arthur, King of the Britons, was taken to be healed of his dreadful wounds-takes its name from this ancient word. Avaloch Farm Music Institute (AFMI) in New Hampshire is also a magical place where chamber music groups come to work and create in an atmosphere free from the distractions of everyday life. In the summer of 2021 I had the pleasure and honor of being a resident of AFMI along with Areli Mendoza-Pannone, Robert Frazier, and Mark Evans as we work-shopped my song cycle, Quarry Songs. Areli, Bobby, and Mark had to go back to the real world half way through the residency, leaving me at AFMI to begin work on An Avaloch Divertimento. The first movement is an Aubade, which are traditionally morning love songs-as opposed to evening love songs or serenades. In the seventeenth century aubades became associated with instrumental works depicting sunrises. It is this sense of the word that is used here, complete with a bird-song oboe cadenza. Pippin takes its name from a variety of apple. While at AFMI I would take afternoon walks through the nearby apple orchard to beautiful Walker Pond. It was on one of these walks that I came up with the first draft of the tune used in the central fughetta of the movement. The word, pippin is also included in Carolyn Forché’s poem, The Museum of Stones, which I had set as the final movement of Quarry Songs. The final movement, Amhrán, means song in Irish and is a simple song form with three interwoven themes that emulate the Irish Bodhran (frame drum), fiddle, and singer. Many thanks to Board Chair, Alfred Tauber, Artistic Director, Deborah Sherr, and Operations Director, Hannah Landes and the whole AFMI staff for creating such a wonderful refuge for musicians to work, learn, and create.
