It is dedicated to Edward Elwyn Jones and theHarvard University Choir.The biblical books of Luke and Acts form a pair of documents from a single author and with a single audience (thelikely-metaphorical “Theophilusâ€), yet they are unusual for being composed in such contrasting genres. Luke’sgospel, using Mark as a primary source throughout, features a comparable literary style to that of the otherevangelists. Acts, by contrast, is a historical monograph that charts the birth of the Church with dramatic storiesabout—and speeches from—the apostles, painting a vivid, if not necessarily chronological, picture of their victoriesand struggles. The Search for Hope is a work for wind orchestra comprised of three distinct motifs that tell a story of looking for hope.  Beginning with a crisp and airy feeling, this intensive work gives us a sense of taking flight over a diverse human landscape in the time reflecting the global pandemic, and the ensuing personal struggles, economic problems and conflicts that continue to have lasting consequences for so many people in the world.  Opening with a “questioning phrase,†illustrated by using a rising minor third motif, the music develops into a more ominous melody that is carried by the bass instruments.  From that questioning phrase the music sharply transitions into a second motif where the music picks up the pace with its own distinctive phrase and musical features, suggesting a time of invasions and military clashes, while tugging and moving our emotions back and forth with a single impression, and raising the question:  Where is hope found? With the final motif the tempo begins to slow and express a more tempered and solemn course of thought, punctuated by the higher brass that takes the lead in carrying the phrase of the music by using a descending minor third to carry the mood.  Allowing the music to reflect and express the vocal inflections used as when a mother gently speaks the name of her child with love and support—the very essence of hope.

These preludes showcase certain environments that are represented by specific musical features. Prelude No. 1 in C Major The Sunrise was composed to represent the picture and environment of the sun rising. It never uses the traditional C major triad, and instead substitutes the C major mediant (the third scale degree of C major) with surrounding harmonic colors. Prelude No. 2 in C Minor Mystics in the Forest is a study of touch and melodic outlining. Only in the first measure exists the resemblance of a C minor chord (a minor thirteenth) using the mediant (the third scale-degree of a scale). Prelude No. 3 in E-Flat Major The Spring Story completely uses staccato melodic articulations with the sustain pedal to produce a colorful environment throughout the piece, representative of spring. It never resolves into the traditional E-Flat major triad (or extended E-Flat chord) after the first measure. Prelude No. 4 in A-Flat Major Childhood Memories uses accented, deep bass notes and staccato melodic articulation to create a nostalgic environment. Like Prelude No. 3, it never resolves into the traditional triad (or extended chord) based on the tonic of the key signature.

Giacommo Puccini, represents the union of Italian and German opera traditions, greatly influenced by Verdi, of whom he is considered his successor, and also by Wagner, Bizet, and Debussy. The main feature of his style was the eclecticism, the incorporation and assimilation of various languages and resources in his profession. Many of the musical concepts, as well as the connection between music and the stage, were the harbinger of what would rule in film music a few decades later. Puccini tooks from the French opera, under the influence of Bizet and Massenet, the taste for the exotic and historical location of his operas. In the case of Turandot, set in ancient China, the opera tells the story of the cruel princess Turandot who, in revenge for a sullied ancestor, beheads her suitors if three riddles are not answered. An unknown prince –Calaf– postulates by answering her three enigmas and challenging her to be the one to find out her name. Turandot orders that no one sleep in Peking until the name of the prince is known, Calaf, who has issued the challenge that if his name is not discovered, princess Turandot must marry him. At the beginning of the third act, the prince sings the aria –Nessun Dorma– convinced that the princess's efforts to discover his name will be in vain. Puccini began the composition in January 1921 and in March 1924 he had already completed the opera up to the final duet. The song was written collaboratively by all the band members for their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. It is built around a piano ballad, with lyrics telling the story about a man's desire to love and an apology. The song was released in the United Kingdom on 4 November 2002 as the second single from A Rush of Blood to the Head and reached number 10 in the UK Charts. It was released in the United States on 15 April 2003 as the third single and reached number 18 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and number 34 on the Adult Top 40 chart. Critics were highly positive towards The Scientist and praised the song's piano ballad and falsetto. Several remixes of the track exist, and its riff has been widely sampled. The single's music video won three MTV Music Video Awards, for the video's use of reverse narrative. Anyone familiar with the era will recognize songs such as: Witch Doctor (Ooo, eee, ooo ah ah, ting tang, Walla walla, bing bang), Sh-Boom (Do-roo-do-do, sh-boom), Blue Moon (Bom ba ba bom ba bom ba bom bom, Dang a dang dang, ding a dong ding). Often, the lead singer had lyrics that told a story, while a backup chorus just sang, Ooo, Aaah. The genre became known as Doo Wop. By the 1960s, the genre, with its simple chords, nonsense syllables, often sung a cappella or featuring a 4 or 5 part vocal group with simple accompaniment, was starting to fade in popularity. The song Who Put the Bomp manages to be both a part of the genre and a nostalgic reflection on its passing. This arrangement captures the essence of the era with close harmonies and a lively beat. The arranger, Bob Coil, is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of music, where he studied bass trombone with Betty Glover. It is this tale that the Coventry Carol depicts, taking the form of a lullaby sung by the mothers of the murdered children. As is appropriate, the music is in a minor key – this arrangement uses G minor and D minor as a homage to well-known harmonisations by Thomas Sharp and Henry Walford Davies. It is unknown when the words were first set to music, but a proposed date is 1591, or earlier! Other interesting musical features include the use of a ‘Picardy third’, and ‘false relations’, contributing to the haunting quality of this enduring piece, both in the heart of the English Midlands, and further afield. This arrangement is suitable for all bands of beginner-intermediate ability or higher. There is plenty of interest for both experienced players, and for newcomers. The instrumentation is designed to facilitate both a full sound, but also for flexibility, which is often desired by school, youth, and amateur wind bands / concert bands / wind orchestras.

Published by L.J Harding (A0.1028773). ‘From Flutter to Flight’ is a String Quartet featuring sequencing, imitation, dynamics and a wide exploration of range. The reason I chose the name ‘From Flutter to Flight’ was because of the inspiration I gained while composing this piece. The story of a bird’s first experience of flight is something that is beautiful, however awkward it may be. The start of the piece, with the duet between Violin 1 & 2, symbolises young birds watching as their parents fly in a dance. The theme is then developed into a four part. The rhythmic pattern in the Viola part represents the fluttering and awkwardness of the young birds as they attempt to fly while the duet between the Violins is maintained and complemented by low notes from the Cello. This represents the birds as they finally begin to learn and begin flying faster and stronger. This swiftly follows by descending thirds on the Cello leading to a four-broken chord progression which creates a sense of adventure and willingness to advance forward. Violin comes in alongside the Cello as the younger birds begin to get more confident. The notes move with the movement of the birds, higher notes representing them flying higher whereas lower notes representing them flying lower. The second theme is then developed with the first theme being played in Violin 2 as a gentle reminder of the birds past and how far they have come. This ends with the return of the first theme in recapitulation followed with some new ideas including a much higher range in Violins 1 & 2 and it closes with the tonic 7th chord to symbolise an ending with the birds finally achieving flight.

Juozas ŽileviÄius (1891–1985) was an organist, composer, educator, and researcher in the history of music. In 1919, when graduating from the Petrograd Conservatory, he composed Symphony in F minor, the first Lithuanian composition in this genre. Upon his return to Lithuania in 1920, ŽileviÄius worked in various musical life spheres of the young republic: he took part in the activities of the Society of Lithuanian Art Creators, contributed to the establishment of Kaunas Opera House, worked for several years as the head of the Art Department at the Ministry of Education, prepared the first music curricula for secondary schools and progymnasiums, conducted courses for music teachers, taught at music schools in Kaunas and KlaipÄ—da, published a musical periodical, and initiated the first Lithuanian Song Festival. Musicologist DanutÄ— PetrauskaitÄ— managed to bring copies of three-movement Nonet for strings and wind instruments from Chicago to Lithuania. ŽileviÄius started writing it in December 1924. The composition was apparently inspired by the Czech Nonet members, working at KlaipÄ—da School of Music, who had been invited by its director Stasys Å imkus from Prague. This was a lively and youthful group that gave concerts all over Lithuania. It amazed audiences with its high artistic level and set an example for students, encouraging them to form various ensembles. The repertoire of the Czech Nonet consisted mainly of works from the Classical and Romantic eras. There were few contemporary compositions, and therefore the Czech Nonet performers turned to composers with a request to write new works for them. They might have discussed the matter with ŽileviÄius with whom they maintained a close relationship, as they did later with Lithuanian composer Jeronimas KaÄinskas.ŽileviÄius finished writing Nonet on 15 November 1926. All three movements were based on the intonations of Lithuanian folk melodies. The first movement (Andante. Allegro moderato) imitatively developed the motifs of the song “Autumn will Comeâ€, while the second one (Andante cantabile) featured fragments of the song I Rode through the Woodâ€, and the third one (Allegro) of the song “Oh, you Bird Cherryâ€. The composition was written professionally, it should have been attractive and interesting for the performers, but, unfortunately, it was never performed. The reasons for this could have been various: disagreements between the director of  KlaipÄ—da Music School, Å imkus, and his deputy, ŽileviÄius, as well a the Czech teachers’ falling into disgrace and starting to resign from their teaching positions in the autumn of 1926. A few years later, ŽileviÄius also resigned from the school: in January 1929 he left for the USA and settled in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he worked as a church organist. He also brought his Nonet from KlaipÄ—da, hoping that this work would be heard in America. To this end, he found transcribers who made instrumental parts from the score. As it turned out, there were few Lithuanian instrumentalists in the USA, and ŽileviÄius did not have close relations with Americans. Thus Nonet, which the composer regarded as one of his most successful compositions after his Symphony in F minor, sank into oblivion. Thanks to Kazys DaugÄ—la, an opportunity appeared to edit and digitise it after the sheet music of Nonet had arrived in Lithuania.
