So one year I decided to write this one. Perhaps the ideal way to present this song is with a soloist who is joined by a choir of adults (or children!) singing in unison on the second and third choruses--emulating a choir of angels. When used this way, this song provides an easy way to stretch your rehearsal time at the Christmas season, as the choir can easily participate, yet there is no learning of extra parts. Brimming with worship of the Christ Child from the very first lyric, Heaven's Here to Stay begins by quietly evoking the atmosphere of the stable. When the chorus arrives, the jubilant singing of the angels arrives as well: Glory in the highest, for the Peace of heaven comes to earth! Glory in the highest--Hope itself was born in Jesus's birth. For Death is dying, Fear is cowering, Light is chasing Night away. The burning love of heaven's here to stay. The second verse takes us from the manger scene to the hills of Judea, where we hear Jesus's words: Come, you weary ones to me, I will give you rest. Trade your tattered rags for my robes of purest white. Come, you hungry, eat, be satisfied. You're all need, but I'm all giving; be still and just receive. A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

The carol uses the octatonic scale and is primarily based on just two chords; triads on C and F sharp, each with added augmented fourths. This gives the music a mysterious and mystical quality, making this a very different version to Kirkpatrick's famous setting. The rocking back and forth of the two harmonies (with a striding bass line below) mimics the movement of Christ's crib. Each verse is texturally varied to maintain development and interest throughout. The piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The accompaniment is quite pianistic but can be played/adapted on the organ.
