Piano Accompaniment, Bass Trombone and Piano - Advanced - Digital Download Composed by Pierce, Alan. 21st Century, Romantic Period, Contemporary Classical, Post-Romantic. Solo Part. 31 pages. Published by Cherry Classics Music
My first season with the Oregon Symphony was 1962-1963. I was so excited when I was told that I was accepted into the Portland Symphony (now Oregon Symphony), I danced and jumped up and down. I can still see myself. Its was like winning the Powerball. I was only 17 years old. What is equally amazing is that 45 years later I retired from a career that very few people can ever experience. I was bass trombonist my first year in the Oregon Symphony and was principal trombonist my third year. I also traveled with the New York Metropolitan Opera National company for 84 weeks as principal trombonist and was bass trombonist of the Portland Opera for 18 years. I played in the Peter Britt Orchestra for two seasons and also in the Anchorage, AK. music festival. I was a scholarship winner to Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass. and the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. I was privileged to perform with Leopold Stowkowski and Erik Leinsdorf. None of this would have been possible without my early training with the Portland, Youth Philharmonic under the leadership of maestro Jacob Avshalomov.<br> <br> I have met many famous people and have played the world's greatest music. The Oregon Symphony music directors and conductors have been magnificent and have each brought many special talents to the orchestra. I remember special concerts featuring Jack Benny, Danny Kaye, Isaac Stern, Leonard Rose, and many others.<br> <br> During my time in the Oregon Symphony I developed a hobby of making batons for some of the conductors who visited our orchestra. Most recently, I made batons for Itzhak Perlman, James DePreist, Carlos Kalmar, Riccardo Mutti, Murry Sidlin, Hannu Lintu, Karel Mark Chichon,<br> <br> Andre Watts, and many others.<br> <br> Since establishing the Alan Pierce Piano Service in 1976, I have tuned pianos for the Oregon Symphony, Andre Watts, Lawrence Leighton Smith, James DePreist, Murry Sidlin, Norman Leyden as well as for many churches, schools and prominent piano teachers. Most recently I tuned the piano in the home of world famous Janet Guggenheim. One of my most special memories was an all expense paid trip to Scottsdale, Arizona to tune the piano of a prominent surgeon. While in Arizona, I had the chance to spend time with the late James DePreist who had a home in the area. For two summers, I also served as piano technician for the Sunriver Music Festival I am currently the president of the Reno chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild. <br> <br> Most recently I got to meet Geoge Curran, bass trombonist of the New York Philharmonic. My wife and I traveled two times to hear him perform my Romanza and Scherzo for bass trombone and piano. What a thrill to hear a world famous trombonist perform my music. I am very honored that George Curran recorded my music on his latest CD. (Vital Signs)

London Town Fantasy for Trombone and Piano

Piano Accompaniment, Trombone - Advanced - Digital Download Composed by Antonio J. Garcia. 21st Century, Jazz, Blues, Swing, Funk Jazz. Score, Solo Part. 14 pages. Published by Cherry Classics Music
Virginia Commonwealth University Professor Antonio J. García has taken Haydn’s “London” Symphony as a point of departure for his London Town Fantasy for trombone and orchestra (or piano accompaniment), commissioned by the Charlottesville Symphony Society for the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra (Virginia). CUSO Music Director Kate Tamarkin sought a piece that would “showcase the trombone in a jazz ballad style and somehow reference the Haydn ‘London’ Symphony” that would follow it on the program, knowing that the first half of the concert would also include the Brahms “Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn.” She and trombone soloist Nathan Dishman suggested the title “London Town Fantasy,” envisioning a potential intersection with elements of George Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day (In London Town),” which seemed apt given a scheduled trip of García’s to London during the compositional process.<br> <br> Listeners familiar with Haydn's “London” Symphony No. 104" will notice references starting at the first measure. And the violin part at the outset of the Symphony’s fourth movement, Allegro Spiritoso, offered the core of what became the melody to this Fantasy. The melody of the “bridge” section of the tune is crafted from the first seven measures of the opening theme of Haydn’s first movement (Allegro).<br> <br> The use of “A Foggy Day” had to be more subtle, as copyright law must be observed, limiting the use of its actual melody within this piece. But Gershwin’s harmony actually is the harmonic basis under the melody of the Fantasy; and his devotees will recognize that when the soloist improvises medium-swing jazz with the orchestra, the chord progression is indeed entirely that of “A Foggy Day.” (An optional written-out solo is provided.)<br> <br> Note that the string section is not asked to play swing eighth-notes at any time. Their jazz-phrased passages are couched in even-eighth, syncopated double-timed-sixteenth, and triplet-eighth cross-rhythmed lines well-rooted in the jazz tradition. Winds and brass, however, have swing-eighth passages to perform (and some even-sixteenth lines).<br> <br> The superb piano reduction makes the six-minute London Town Fantasy ideal for performances on student and professional recitals, and no improvisational skills are needed by the pianist. Available MIDI demonstration recordings of the duo and orchestral settings, with MIDI soloist or “minus one,” make rehearsals easy and even provide the aural basis for your own potential “virtual” performance.

Trombone Choir Ensemble - Advanced - Digital Download Composed by Charles Ives (1874-1954). Arranged by Ross Holcombe. 20th Century, Americana. Score, Set of Parts. 44 pages. Published by Cherry Classics Music
Here is what the arranger, Ross Holcombe says about his great scoring of this wonderful and unique work by Ives.<br> <br> Ives finished the majority of his Concord Sonata, from which this movement is excerpted, in 1915. According to Ives, the piece reflects on the old Alcott house in Concord, MA, but I feel a greater struggle in this work than a mere journal about a piece of architecture. The fact that Ives quotes Beethoven’s 5th Symphony so extensively makes me wonder about his views on destiny, fate, the future, and the creative process. <br> <br> The piece starts serenely but quickly devolves into uncertainty, doubt, and anger. A floating interlude brings us back to distant memories where we remember that we are shaped by our past, but have control of the direction of our future. Building on that realization and quickly gaining steam, the piece ends with a powerful and joyful climax. The angry Beethoven theme is transformed into one of power, hope, and light. A feeling of calm and contentment ends the piece, finally coming to rest on one simple C major chord.<br> <br> This work is scored for 10 trombones: 1 alto, 7 tenor, and 2 bass trombones and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Lament for Trombone and String Orchestra by composer Jeremy Niles Kempton is a serious and lyrical work of about 6 minutes in length for advanced performers.<br> <br> The work was composed and performed within a 2 week period at a memorial concert given for Helen Manheim, a violist in Mr. Kempton's Island Chamber Symphony on Long Island, NY. Ms. Manheim died rather suddenly and her passing left the composer with a deep feeling of regret at having taken her and so many other ICS musicians for granted.<br> <br> The composition consists of 3 lengthy phrases. The first epitomizes the grief at her passing. The 2nd presents her life and consists of 3 phrases, all starting the same but each striving higher. The final section is her legacy, what she leaves behind.<br> <br> The live performance features Mr. Kempton as soloist with the Island Chamber Symphony.

David Fetter's brilliant new work Situation Update - Suite for Tenor Trombone and Concert Band is written in three contrasting movements totalling almost 11 minutes in length:<br> <br> 1. Swift<br> <br> 2. Longing<br> <br> 3. Exit Music<br> <br> Swift is marked "Intense" and is very rhythmic and angular. Longing is a beautiful lyrical movement marked "Cantabile" and Exit Music is marked "Lively" mixing chromatic, lyrical and syncopated segments, ending in a giant climax.<br> <br> Both the solo and accompaniment parts are written for advanced performers.<br> <br> The work's premier was performed in 2015 by retired Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Ronald Barron and accompanied at the Piano by Pianist Larry Wallach.<br> <br> Here is what Mr. Ewazen has said about Situation Update:<br> <br> "I had the pleasure of hearing Ron Barron play David Fetter's exciting and virtuosic new work for Trombone and Piano, "Situation Update”. David's music allows the Trombonist to sing and soar in 3 contrasting movements filled with vivid colors, beautiful and expressive harmonies, and a wonderful flowing rhythmic energy. The outer movements crackle with<br> <br> energy, showcasing the amazing technique of soloist Ron Barron, as the melodic line shifts and changes with playful abandon, while the middle movement is heartfelt and lyrical, with beautiful melodic lines, supported by resonant, gorgeous harmonies. The work is a real tour de force and<br> <br> rightly deserves to take its place as a significant addition to the Trombone repertoire."

Symphonie Fantastique for Trombone Quartet

(+)
Brass Ensemble Bass Trombone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.955716 Composed by Hector Berlioz. Arranged by Phil Thrift. Classical. Score and parts. 47 pages. Phil Thrift #5306259. Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955716). This trombone quartet arrangement of Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique contains all the well-known themes of the full orchestral symphony. The beginning is identical with the original, but then proceeds immediately to the March to the Scaffold of the fourth movement. The famous idée fixe of the symphony is first heard at measure 72, and this is followed by other themes from the first movement. The adagio at measure 164 re-creates the pastoral duet of the symphony’s third movement. As indicated on the charts, the first trombone should play this section offstage (as for the oboist in the original), while the others remain on stage. If this is not possible, then the first trombone should play this section muted. This very reflective interlude is followed by my personal favorite, the wondrously jolly waltz from the symphony’s second movement. This is followed by the Witches’ Round Dance, a sort of fugue, which leads to the dies irae – played in four octaves here, with a high Eflat to test your first trombonist! The idée fixe is stated once again before the arrangement concludes in the same way as the original symphony. This is a light-hearted arrangement that is not intended to re-create exactly the grandeur of the original with its huge orchestral forces. Lasting up to 8 min 50 sec, depending on how fast you take some sections, this piece will require some stamina, but every player does get a break and the lead shifts between all four trombones. If you’re not familiar with the full orchestral version, then I suggest you listen to it before attempting this arrangement.Alternative tenor clef parts are included for the tenor trombones.

This, the trombone octet adaptation of my trombone quartet arrangement of Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique, again features all the well-known themes of the full orchestral symphony. The idée fixe is stated once again before the arrangement concludes in the same way as the original symphony. This is a light-hearted arrangement that is not intended to re-create exactly the grandeur of the original with its huge orchestral forces. Lasting nearly 9 min, depending on how fast you take some sections, this piece will require some stamina, but with many sections arranged for two, three or four trombones, every player does get a break. The first part requires a very capable alto trombonist with a good high register.Player 1 plays alto throughout, player 2 switches between alto and tenor, and parts 7 and 8 are for bass trombone.Sensible page turns were impossible to incorporate in some of the parts while at the same time not exceeding four pages. So in those parts the players are instructed – during longer breaks – to fetch the next page in good time, which is easily possible if the parts are printed out on separate sheets. Players using tablets won’t have any problems, of course.

Trombone Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811087 Composed by Tom Ervin. Arranged by Marco Bordogni. Classical,Instructional,Opera,Romantic Period. Individual part. 26 pages. Gordon Cherry #5009439. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811087). The Rochut editions of Bordogni’s vocalises have become the most widly used etudes in American trombone pedigogy. They are prized for their lyric beauty, and also for their development of endurance, upper range, legato technique, styling and more. Other bass clef instrumentalists use Rochut. These Twenty Counterparts may be practiced and played as etudes alone. They are similar in style to the Bordogni; some are harder and some are easier than the Bordogni originals. But the primary intent was for recreational duet playing and for the trombone studio. Duets are fun and more, contributing to sightreading, intonation, ensemble, style-matching, confidence, independence, etc. As with the piano accompaniments, the duet parts also enhance the original melodies. Read what these famous trombonists have to say about this new contribution to the trombone literature …indisputably one of the most invaluable additions to appear in a very long time. Understanding lyricism is much easier when hearing this second voice. Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombone, New York Philharmonic …fantastic and beautiful. What a great idea! They will give the student a wonderful sense of music-making. Henry Charles Smith, Arizona State University …absolutely ingenious….they capture the essential character of each piece and cleverly expand and enhance the original material. Can be ‘stand alone’ material in its own right. I have already used them successfully on trombone, euphonium, and tuba. Loren Marsteller, Los Angeles An enjoyable new way to play the old favorites. Perform them with friends; record one part and play the other; play them alone…a great idea. Ralph Sauer, Principal Trombone Los Angeles Philharmonic A great book and a great idea! Really valuable; I am using it in my teaching. Jay Friedman, Principal Trombone, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Excellent studies, challenging in all registers, rewarding to play. Ned Meredith, formerly San Francisco Symphony Orchestra A very insightful and fresh approach to the trombone’s most important collection of etudes…destined to become a standard in the trombone literature. An absolute must! Michael Davis, jazz recording artist, New York City The unexpected harmonic progressions are a delight. They work great for euphoniums and for trombone and tuba R. Winston Morris, Tennessee Technological University …similar to the Rochut yet contains challenging rhythmic independence and contrast, increasing the value of ensemble experience. As an aid to duet performance, the measure, staff and page format is arranged the same as Rochut’s Fischer edition. Glenn P. Smith, Professor Emeritus University of Michigan A fine addition to the lyrical literature Charles Vernon, Bass Trombone Chicago Symphony Orchestra They’re not only enjoyable to play, but add some ‘zip’, harmonically, melodically, and rhythmically, to the original melodies. Buddy Baker University of Northern Colorado Compositionally, very interesting, not just a duet in thirds…stylistically appropriate…a great way to begin a lesson. Vern Kagarice, University of North Texas An outstanding idea, very valuable Keith Brown, Indiana University I enjoy the book with my students and then also change parts Carsten Svanberg, Danish National Symphony Orchestra Bravo! They serve a great purpose, very musical and playable. Will become a part of the standard trombone repertoire in a very short time…already part of mine. Jiggs Whigham, Professor of Trombone and Jazz, Cologne Germany

Brass Ensemble Trombone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.792308 Composed by Saint-Saëns, Camille. Arranged by Sauer, Ralph. 20th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 45 pages. Gordon Cherry #4804495. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792308). The Adagio from Symphony No. 3 (also known as the Organ Symphony) is part of the final movement of this great symphony by Saint-Saëns. The music is deeply felt and conveys great spiritual conviction. Mr. Sauer's new arrangement has used all of Saint-Saen's music and he has scored it for 8 trombones with an optional 9th part on contra bass trombone. The Adagio was one of the Chief's (Emory Remington's) favourites; the late Mrs. Laura Remington had been the long-time organist with the Rochester Philharmonic and hearing the music would bring back a flood of memories often with tears. This music is 8 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by moderately advanced players. Some of the parts are in tenor clef.

Trombone Duet Trombone - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1266575 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ander. 19th Century,Classical,March,Opera,Romantic Period. Score. 6 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #859250. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1266575). This Trombone Duet arrangement was created to preserve the characteristics of the original work, inspiring and significant to Beethoven’s well-known choral symphony. It is suitable for young music students and professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations, and didactic material. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one key change, maintaining the essence of the striking melody. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony Op. 125 incorporates part of the poem An die Freude (“To Joyâ€), a hymn written by Friedrich Schiller, with the text sung by soloists and a choir in its last movement. It was the first example of a major composer using the human voice as prominently as instruments in a symphony, creating a far-reaching work that set the tone for the symphonic form adopted by Romantic composers. This is Ludwig van Beethoven’s last complete symphony. The choral symphony, better known as the Ninth Symphony or The Ninth, is one of the best-known works in the Western repertoire, considered an icon and predecessor of Romantic music and one of Beethoven’s great masterpieces. It was first performed on May 7, 1824 at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna, Austria.

This Trombone Duet arrangement was written to maintain the original work’s characteristics, for young music students entering symphonic music or professional musicians for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations, and didactic material. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one key change for comfortability. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 was completed in 1812 and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Symphony No. 7 was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, directed by Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his “most excellent symphony,†and a music critic of the time reported it as the most melodically rich and comprehensible of all Beethoven’s symphonies.

Trombone Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1261845 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ander. 19th Century,Classical,Film/TV,March,Romantic Period. 13 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #854928. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1261845). This arrangement adapted for trombone quartet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change of key, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as for use in ensemble practice between musicians of different traditions. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..
