The prelude featuresthe tune in the tenor range on a solo stop. The imitation of the Irish flute isthe focal point of the lively first variation. The Variations on a theme by Haydn, now also called the St. Anthony Variations is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B-flat major based on a “Chorale St. Antoniâ€, eight variations and a finale. It is often said to be the first independent set of variations for orchestra in the history of music. Brahms composed the work on a theme entitled “Chorale St. Antoni†found in a wind ensemble composition. At the time Brahms discovered it, the wind ensemble piece carried an attribution to the composer Joseph Haydn. Brahms titled his own composition accordingly, crediting Haydn for the theme, but publishers in the early nineteenth century often attached the names of famous composers to works by unknown or lesser known composers in order to move inventory. Subsequent research has concluded that the wind piece Brahms used as a source does not fit Haydn’s style. The Variations on a Theme by Handel are based on the Sarabande from Handel's Suite No. 11 in D Minor, a movement made famous by the 1975 motion picture Barry Lyndon by director Stanley Kubrick. Indeed, this superlative film, which brought to the screen a remarkably authentic interpretation of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844), won an Oscar for its imaginative musical adaption of Handel's theme. This cinematic gem stimulated Ford to create four new variations which he interpolated into Handel's original score, a short movement consisting only of the theme and variations two and three of the present work. Exactly why Handel provided this majestic Sarabande with only two variations may never be precisely known, but Ford's expansion of the movement by more than half its original length makes for a compelling and aesthetically satisfying concert solo.

Brahms wrote this piece (Op. 56) in the summer of 1873, first for two pianos then as an orchestral work. It is well-known for its unique five-measure phrasing of the chorale, which is used throughout the piece. Brahms kept this basic structure while developing the material in each variation, creating ten related-but-separate musical gems. This works out well for brass players, as individual variations range from just under a minute to just over three minutes for the finale. The piece is a joy to perform. The variations can be combined at will to fit performer skills for recitals, concerts and contests. This is a set of 8 variations on a theme in C major, which begin as Classical sounding variations on the Mozartian theme, Nos 1 and 2 of which sound quite like short Czerny studies, before a variation of many repeated notes embedded in broken chord figurations, until a frantic ending disrupts the traditional Classical harmony with plenty of chromaticism and a slightly bluesy ending. The next variation is in 12/8 with a lilting feel, while the 6th variations is a C minor one which begins in a stately march feel before merging into freer, slightly jazzier material. Variation 7 returns to C major for a jolly outburst while the finale that is Variation 8 pours cascades of chords and gymnastical passages all over the place (including a black-key octave glissando in the right hand with a white-key gliss in the left at the same time), with an unexpected ending.

The Sarabande is the fourth movement in the suite and is written as a theme with two variations. Generations of keyboard players have studied this piece. It is still listed as a List A (Baroque) selection in the Royal Conservatory Celebration Series (2015). I learned it many years ago and it has always been one of my favourite pieces.
