Schadl (A0.912505). Theme and Variations on TRSCH is a piece that is suitable for concert use. As one plays the piece, one shall realize that each variation has its own character. The work also may be used for educational purposes in that it teaches students on how a theme is transformed rhythmically and arranged melodically.Theme And Variations On TRSCH For Organ by Thomas R. Schadl consists of seven variations that are based on TRSCH (B flat, D, E flat, C, and B or A# D D# C B). It is written using the serial technique, the compositional method where a row of notes are arranged in direct, reverse, inverse and retrograde-inverse orders. The technique employed is not as strict as the 12-tone system used in the compositions of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. In a standard theme and variations form, the melody may be altered by adding or subtracting notes, or changing it rhythmically, but it is not the case in the piece being discussed. Most variations do not follow the rhythmic pattern of the main theme; rather, the theme in each variation is treated in fragments, lengthened note values, shortened note values, inversions and reversed orders. It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they werenâ€™t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on â€˜God save the Kingâ€™, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to â€˜show the English what a blessing they haveâ€™ with that tune. We donâ€™t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (â€˜Heil dir im Siegerkranzâ€™).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

The anthem used in the Canaries for local official occasions is an adaptation of a local folk song called ArrorrÃ³ (Lullaby) by Teobaldo Power (1848 â€“ 1884). Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of the seven Canary Islands. Tenerife has a special relation to Columbus and the New World as he first stopped in Tenerife on each of his passages before sailing to the New World. There is a plaque in the center of Tenerife city depicting this.Variations on a Canarian Hymnis in the classictheme and variations form, startingwith a presentation of the folk song in its entirety, then following with six variations of the folk song. The Variations on a Theme by Handel are based on the Sarabande from Handel's Suite No. 11 in D Minor, a movement made famous by the 1975 motion picture Barry Lyndon by director Stanley Kubrick. Indeed, this superlative film, which brought to the screen a remarkably authentic interpretation of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844), won an Oscar for its imaginative musical adaption of Handel's theme. This cinematic gem stimulated Ford to create four new variations which he interpolated into Handel's original score, a short movement consisting only of the theme and variations two and three of the present work. Exactly why Handel provided this majestic Sarabande with only two variations may never be precisely known, but Ford's expansion of the movement by more than half its original length makes for a compelling and aesthetically satisfying concert solo.

Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928135). Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is one of Brahms' most popular works, expertly arranged here for Brass Quintet by American composer P. F. Strohm. Brahms wrote this piece (Op. 56) in the summer of 1873, first for two pianos then as an orchestral work. It is well-known for its unique five-measure phrasing of the chorale, which is used throughout the piece. Brahms kept this basic structure while developing the material in each variation, creating ten related-but-separate musical gems. This works out well for brass players, as individual variations range from just under a minute to just over three minutes for the finale. The piece is a joy to perform. The variations can be combined at will to fit performer skills for recitals, concerts and contests. Played in its entirety, Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is a striking concert showpiece with a typical performance time of 17:50. This third edition of the arrangement has uses a new font, clarifies some accidentals, and improves the part layouts. Difficulty level for the piece varies between Medium and Medium-Advanced.
