Composer’s Note - To Your ShoreMy cultural heritage is mixed: I was born of a Caucasian Australian father of Welsh descent and a Chinese mother from Penang who settled in Australia after some years in Brunei. Thus I find myself frequently pondering the immigrant experience. I wrote the text of T​o Your Shore​ ​to act as kind of twin soliloquies: the first from a person on a boat catching first sight of land, the second from another person standing on the shore ready to welcome the ship they spy on the horizon. I tried to evoke a mixture of trepidation and hope you might feel whilst on your way to a new life in a place where you don’t yet speak the language, where society’s customs and traditions are different, where the climate and the environment feel so very foreign to you, but where you might have a chance at building a happier life.-- Sally Whitwell

It is written in A minor (aka no sharps or flats) and includes no accidentals. As such, it should fit pretty much any standard model of small harp with zero modifications, including any model of Harpsicle Harp (even the ones without levers), Roosebeck Pakistani harps, Harp-E, Musicmakers Sonnet 29, or Dusty Strings Ravenna 26.Because you will need to silence each chord immediately after playing to get that sharp, abbrasive, almost staccato sound from my video (something I didn't have the tools to notate fully in the score), this song is trickier than it looks and is not really a new beginner piece, despite the simple notation. Beginners are, of course, welcome to try playing it exactly as written. But you should know that it will not sound exactly the same.Please note that the preview cuts off after the first line of score (as this composition is so short). When you download your purchase, you will recieve a pdf that contains both the preview and the full score.

(I have a way of notating a melody very quickly so that I don’t lose music in such situations.) Until I sat down to do the first recording of this music, Water in a Dry Land was still just the little waltz. But while the music expressed all the longing for water that we here in the dry land feel, it didn’t actually have any water in it, and as soon as I started recording I wanted some watery music to be there. So I made up the middle section, which seems to me to be quite watery, and practiced it and thought I was done. Then the next time we recorded it, on listening to the playback, all of a sudden I wanted to hear the dry land! That was the genesis of the opening chords, which repeat after the middle (water) section. I was still refining (that is, re-writing) this music up to the very day I recorded it!Advanced: a challenging piece that offers many contrasts of mood and style. Architectural in its structure, with sections depicting the sandstone cliffs of New Mexico, the earth’s longing for water, and the welcome blessing of gentle rains.

Here is a new suite of older carols for string quartet in which each musician is required to play a wee bit of percussion in addition to his or her real instrument. The potential for entertaining visual theater is nearly as high as the potential for mishap. (If all goes according to plan, nothing should actually go airborne.)This is something of a sequel to my earlier Christmas quartet And Therefore Be Merry, which has never been out of print since it was first published over twenty years ago. But where that work was a continuous medley, this is a set of independent and more fully developed movements, each able to stand on its own. As mentioned above, each member of the quartet is responsible for a small item of percussion. These are all things which could readily be found in a local school band room: a triangle, a tambourine, a suspended cymbal - played with a soft (yarn) stick - and a small frame drum, played with the bare hand. These are all earlier, earthier carols than what one typically finds on the radio or playing over the speakers at the mall. They include Gloucestershire Wassail, Riu Riu Chiu, Angelus ad Virginem, The Sans Day Carol, The Wexford Carol, and Masters in This Hall. Being perhaps less familiar, they bring a welcome respite from the overworked seasonal fare we all hear a bit too much of each year. They speak of simpler times, and of a far less frantic approach to Christmas. These fresh and inventive arrangements will make a useful addition to a quartet’s repertoire, provided the players have the requisite spirit of adventure. Score and Parts total 67 pages. Performance time is about 14 minutes.
