Published by TigerSong LLC (A0.1121338). Kittatinny Ridge Suite is composed of three movements: I. On the Delaware at Carpenter's Point, II. The Fields of Walpack at Dusk, and III. Yellow Frame's Harvest Home. The suite is a musical landscape of different points along the Kittatinny mountain ridge in western Sussex County, New Jersey. I. On the Delaware at Carpenter's Point explores a kayaking trip at the very northern point of New Jersey. From the river one can see the High Point monument, the highest point in the state, as one crosses under bridges, passes islands, and speeds through small rapids. II. The Fields of Walpack at Dusk paints the tiny, rural township of Walpack, with its quiet fields and forests. The central theme is In Babilone: an old Dutch melody, echoing the regions colonial-era settlers. III. Yellow Frame's Harvest Home is a fantasy on Come, Ye Thankful People, Come, illustrating the late summer community dinner, Harvest Home run by the Yellow Frame Presbyterian Church, of Fredon township. Other hymn tunes surface in the piece, including May the Lord Mighty God and St. Anne (the colonial-era psalm tune for O God our Help in Ages Past).

O Setting Sun was commissioned by the Madison Chamber Choir, Madison, Wisconsin, Anthony Cao, conductor, and was premiered on April 20th, 2012. “What is the Grass†was composed for Cappella SF, Ragnar Bohlin, conductor, and is being premiered on tonight’s concert. Facing West was commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge by the International Orange Chorale, Zane Fiala, conductor, and was premiered on May 27th, 2012. I first set Whitman to music in 1986,when I adapted part of “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed†as the basis for my composition “Invocation and Dance.†I went on to set “Good-Bye, My Fancy†for Male Chorus and Soprano Saxophone in 1992, and “Song of the Open Road†for Mixed Chorus and Piano in 2004. Like so many composers, I have found the visionary quality of Whitman’s verse inspiring; the vigor and intensity of the poetry seem naturally to draw out music. Facing West is drawn from the Children of Adam book from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. The full title of the poem is Facing West From California's Shores. Though Whitman never visited California, his biographer Justin Kaplan made the insightful observation that he imagined California's shores to be the starting point for a journey through time and culture. Here was Walt, 'a child, very old,' facing home again, looking over to it, joyous, as after long travel, growth, and sleep, asking: 'But where is what I started for, so long ago?/And why is it yet unfound?' The invitation from the International Orange Chorale to compose a piece in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge led me easily and naturally to this great poem. The tone of Facing West is rich and complex, and draws on one of Whitman's favorite themes of using travel to distant lands as a metaphor for spiritual development. In his poem, Whitman strikes notes of reflection, of longing for adventure, and ultimately ends with a question. The continuing relevance of this question is for me beautifully addressed by the contemporary American writer Edmund White in his 1980 book States of Desire. To paraphrase somewhat, White writes: California is where dreams may come true, and the problem it presents is whether, after all, we wanted these particular dreams to be fulfilled - or would we have preferred others? Did we know what price these dreams would exact? Did we anticipate the ways in which they would unsuit us for the business of daily life? Or should our notion of daily life itself be transformed? For Americans, California's coast is as far as one can go in establishing new roots and new ways of living. As a transplanted Midwesterner who has made California his home for nearly three decades, I experience the Golden Gate Bridge as a beautiful monument to the aspirations and dreams of a restless and inventive people, qualities that Whitman's poem captures perfectly. -David ConteDuration: 5:42

The three movements are inspired by various places in Key West, Florida, where I was serving as an Artist in Residence at the Studios of Key West in June 2013. I'm a Cuban-American born in Havana, and my influences include Cuban popular music (of course), Jazz, and the contrapuntal music of Bach and other Baroque composers. I think you can hear all of that in this piece. Jorge and MIa perform it beautifully on their CD, Key West, which I highly recommend. Although it’s in 3/4 it’s neither courante nor galliard, waltz nor minuet. It just is. Unusually for me, the chordal accompaniment is written for harpsichord (or any keyboard instrument), in order to get the full arpeggiation not possible on my octave mandola or bouzouki.The Western Heights, in Dover, used to be a really fun place to go; a barracks inter alia for a French invasion that never quite happened. Miles of tunnels built into a mountainside with rotten drawbridges, very steep stone staircases and plenty of rats. I used to climb inside and spend hours wandering around in the dark stumbling over debris, squeezing through narrow gaps, climbing walls. It’s been taken over now by various doers of good and made ‘safe’. I think you have to pay to get in. Back in the day one could be Indiana Jones for a while and have a truly great time.

This song expresses the grief that we experience with the death of a pet, but also the hope that we will be reunited with them one day. This version of the song is a backing track for a soloist. His suggestions and errata information will hopefullylend assistance to you as you prepare for your concert.Quoting five Major points:1) There must be at least one very strong 2nd violin player as some melodies areintroduced from there.2) Trumpets can double the horns at the octave, though only in spots and verydiscreetly, and not playing at all in the second movement. It is most unusual tohave timpani but no trumpets.3) 2nd movement halfway through, the descending viola line that needs to becompleted by a cellist. [p.38, 5 before E, one cellist to play f-B-Csharp 8ths]4) An A sharp in the solo line in 1st movement that is critical; otherwise it soundsbluesy [p. 30,5 after H].5) Missed accidentals in 1st violin in the 3rd movement [p. 43, 2nd and 3rd mmand p. 51, 3rd and 4th mm. C naturals].
