Described as a « tour de force« during the operaâ??s initial run of performances â??Henry Faustâ? by Gregory Sullivan Isaacs is a three-act, one character opera based on Goëtheâ??s play as translated by Anna Swanwich (1859) with a libretto by the composer. It was premièred at the Circle Theatre in Chicago on April 11, 1993 with the Composer as Faust and Kevin Hinton, pianistâ??Henry Faustâ? started out as a thought about the â??essenceâ? of opera. Isaacs thought that one singer, one piano, and a black box theater were all that was really needed to achieve â??opera-nessâ?. Goetheâ??s play, â??Faust,â? immediately came to mind. The tale of the professor who makes a deal with the devil for infinite knowledge and the restoration of youth, only to betray himself by lust, seemed perfect. The three-act opera is for tenor and piano and in a Goethe-era English translation by Anna Swanwick. She was the leading translator of Goethe of her day and one of the first advocates for womenâ??s rights. Every word Faust sings is a line from the play.The opera is set in a miserable single-occupancy hotel room furnished with an iron cot, a beat-up dresser and a tattered arm chair. Faust, disheveled and in his pajamas, lives out the drama. The ensuing events, the feverish creations of an addled brain, are all real to Faust. He sees and interacts with the other two characters â?? the devil and Gretchen â?? and flies to hell to dance at the Witches Sabbath. Both the tenor and piano parts are equally demanding and require artists of the first order. The tenor part covers a great range â?? both vocally and dramatically. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. Your audience’s memory of this Eighties rock anthem by Journey will be playing along in their head—from the original album, a live performance, The Sopranos, Glee, karaoke, or all of the above. But they’ve never heard it before on a harp.<br> <br> This arrangement makes good use of the double-strung by using both sides for repeated notes and letting the accompaniment hand overlap the melody. The result is beautiful but still ballsy.<br> <br> Range and key: F major (one flat). 23x2 strings. C below middle C through D.<br> Lever changes: None.<br> <br> Good for: Weddings, parties, performance, therapeutic settings.<br> <br> Double-strung effects: The LH accompaniment frequently overlaps the RH melody range. Finger placements are suggested for playing echoed notes with alternating hands to work around or emphasize ringing strings. Since the alternate-hand echoing is not required, it’s a great piece to learn this technique on.<br> <br> Characteristics: Arpeggios and a syncopated melody. The RH never places more than an octave spread; the LH places 1-9 twice. There are a few four-note chords (LH 1-3-5-8); the rest of the chords are three notes, usually not inversions. The RH has almost no chords. There are two bars of sixteenth notes that can easily be substituted for eighths. The LH has two long-run patterns (1-5-8-9-10 and 1-5-8-9) which can be played with cross-unders or a wandering thumb. The RH has only two cross-overs.<br> <br> Finger placement: Finger number suggestions are provided for key phrases. Numbers above the notes are suggestions for the RH (marked with “R” or “R#” when they occur in the bottom staff). Numbers below the notes are suggestions for the LH (marked with “L” or “L#” when they occur in the top staff). Treble clef in both staves. Low Fs use 8vb sometimes, so if you see a lot of low ledger lines, don’t worry: it’s that F below middle C. Instead of counting the lines, you can look at the chord symbols to confirm.<br> <br> Length: 6 pages. 106 measures. 4:00–5:00 minutes, depending on tempo.<br> <br> Page turns: If you are printing, double-side pages 2-3 and 4-5 to minimize page turns.
